There is, however, some in the fact that when the lab returns nine months later the time will be a little better so far as farm work is con cerned.

Of course, there will be subsequent announcements as to the exact time and place the lab will be stationed in our county and everyone will have the oppor tunlty to enroll in the program. The building project on Kelleys Island at the 4-H Camp is progressing fairly well. However, a great deal needs to be done before the camping season opens on June 10. Why not make arrangements to take a short week-end "vacation" on Kelleys Island between now and the 10th. It makes an enjoyable family outing for these nice spring week-ends.

Boat fare and food are furnished by the camp. It will be necessary, however, to bring your own bedding if you plan to stay over night. The 4-H Camp needs your help and I think you will find it both an inexpensive and enjoyable holiday. It isn't necessary that you be a skilled carpenter. Farmer Warned On Atom Bomb Farmers and their families should plan to seek shelter against the H-bomb In a cyclone or root cellar if one is available. This ts the latest advice from the Federal Civil Defense Administration. Warning against the dangers of "fallout," federal defense officials say the radioactive particles can be, fatal, but farmers can make effective preparations to protect their families and livestock. The main danger area would be downwind from the blast. If a cyclone or root cellar is not available, the basement of the house is next best.

Even the first floor of the house can be used effectively if windows and doors arc kept closed. Livestock can be protected in barns or under sheds Farmers also should be ready to receive evacuees from cities in case of an H-bomb attack, although evacuation plans are still in the early stages. As they are developed, they will include preparations in rural areas to feed, clothe, shelter and if necessary, give medical treatment to the millions who would crowd out of the cities. Huron and Sandusky Cos. Foliar Fertilizer Results Reported WOOSTER, A four-year study of complete liquid fertilizers at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station showed that crop yields were not significantly increased by -foliar- placement of the material. Agronomist H. J. Mederski used corn, wheat, oats, alfalfa and soybeans in the tests.

Al-2-1 ratio liquid fertilizer was sprayed on the plants at various times during the growth period. Under conditions of these tests, there was no increased benefit in terms of yield. Mederski states that in these experiments foliar fertilization was not a practical substitute or supplement to the usual soil fertilizing practices. He urges Ohio farmers to buy fertilizer on the basis of cost per unit of plant food and to apply it according to current extension recommendations. Eggs Need Added Care In Summer Egg storage And handling is extremely Important in hot weather, says R.

I. Cray, Ohio State University poultry science professor. To maintain quality and reduce breakage, Cray suggests poultry men gather eggs in wire baskets two or three times a day and store them in the coolest pi.ice on the farm. Basements or spring houses usually the best egg storage places during summer. Tempera tures are lower in basements when outside walls are protected from the sun.

Leaving eggs in wire baskets over night before packing in cases insures thorough cooling. It's a good idea to put empty egg cases, fillers and flats in the basemen at least two or three days before they are used, says Cray. If cases aren't cool and moist before eggs are packed, the good effect of prompt cooling is lost. Humidity in storage rooms is just as important as temperature the specialist adds. Water sprinkled on the floor or on burlap hanging from the walls will maintain proper humidity.

1955 Corn Crop Will Match 1954 Before puttying windows, mix the putty with paint the same color as the frames. It saves the touch up job after the putty is on. COLUMBUS An Ohio State University extension economist, Riley Dougan, expects th 1955 corn crop to be about the same as last year. Dougan says farmers' planting intentions indicate a one percent increase in Ohio corn acreage. He expects little change in U.

S. corn acreage. With the 16 percent larger pig crop last fall and an estimated spring pig crop five percent larger than last spring, farmers will need more corn for feed. That will mean less carryover in storage and when the new crop is harvested next fall. The carryover will still be larger than average, Dougan says.

He predicts corn prices will not go above government loan prices this year. Commodity Credit Corporation may start selling corn under the support program when the price goes a little above the loan level, Dougan explains. National average loan price for the 1954 crop is $1.62 a bushel. UCAOIAN tl-Utl It aratfyct Bivliion, Cliaical By PHYLLIS BATTELLE (Copyright, 1955, by INS) NEW YORK Today is Friday the thirteenth, a day on which almost no one except babies, lunatics and people who can't read able to act quite like himself.

Instead, he tends to act more like a baby, a lunatic or a person who can't read calendars. Generally speaking, the population divides itself into two camps for celebrating Fridays the thirteenth. Or is it (this day I always get rattled) Friday these thirteen? First, there's the blow-hard, ho-ho ha-ha, you believe hat old guff? Camp. These are the people who go out of their way, poking around garages and new houses, in search of ladders to walk under. When occasionally a ladder drops on a ho-ho man, he explains that it was mere coincidence.

This calls for admiration, as coincidence is a difficult word to get out, when prone. Two Other Species The other Big camp is the don't- call-me-superstitious pal but-no- -for-trouble-is-there? group. These are the honest ones who face facts as gocd naturedly as possible and usually come out of the day with job and body intact and only a mild case of indigestion. At either end of this group are two other species, both extremely rare: Those who cling to their beds, in self defense, on Friday the thirteenth' and those who forget altogether what day it is, usually owing to extreme pressures from business or a member of the opposite sex. There is only one person I know personally who can be classed with no other citizen on this particular day.

She is a woman -who positively rolls on the floor, laughing, when you mention the potential woes of the 13th. That agile, she is, and that amused. Her name is Claudia de Lys, and she's the country's big expert on whys, where- fors and whodunems. The origin of Friday the 13th, she says, poking around in her gigantic file of dizzy dogmas, is about the silliest ever Best Known Theory "The best-known theory on why Friday is an ill-fated day," she explains, "is that that is supposed to be the day Eve tempted Adam with the fatal apple. Now, honey, do you believe that?" Well, I said, "There is also the story that Friday was named after Frigg (or Frigga), the Norse goddess of marriage.

Later she was confused with the goddes of love, Freya, who in turn became identified with Friday," Claudia went on. "When the Norsemen and Germanic tribes became Christians, Freya was supposed to have been banished to the mountains as a witch and Fri day came to be called 'witches' For it was believed that on this day each week, 12 witches and the devil evil spirits, holding clubby little sessions on Friday. "There you are," she said. "Do you go for that?" Mysterious Unknown Miss de Lys further pointed out that the number 13 as an ill omen was even more loosely come by, The chief theory is: When man first learned to count, he added up his 10 fingers, and counting his feet as two units, he came up with the number 12. Beyond that lay the vague, mysterious in the form of the number "13." "Consider," said the expert, "what would have happened if men would have counted in their toes in that deal, instead mm feet, thm tt mm mm tie tfiluieWsi MhMky "Just i matter and Ignorance, dear," eluded, "forget It."
