PAGE SIX THE DAILY COtMSl CONNBlSVYif, PA. WEDNESDAY, APRIL Connellsville, Frailer Extend Baseball Strings CANS Gets Sixth Win NCAA ReW At Laurel Highlands, Leaden Get Plays Monessen Twice One of ihe oldest cliches in sports is that used by coaches who icil ou "we play oar one at a time." Meaning they don'i look to the future, or ai least they want you to think they don't. Tom Sankovich does took to the future at Connellsville, and when he gets into Section 10 baseoall competition, he probably will play his games one at a time. But for the present. Coach Sankovich will continue playing them two at a Now standing 6-0 after Laurel Highlands, yesterday, 13-3, on the combined four-hit pitching of Lam Green and Mark Mathews, the Falcons continue a road swing today that will see them playing five games in the next three days.

Weather permitting. The Falcons will play them two ai a time today in Monessen (first game 3 p.m.), and at Charleroi on Thursday (also 3 p.m.), then after a single game Friday at Perryopolis (4 p.m.) against Frazier High's Commodores, it's back home on Saturday, and back to the double standard. McKeesport, a newcomer to the CAHS schedule, be In tovra Saturday for a double-bill, starting at 2 p.m. Connellsville ruined the season debut for Laurel Highlands yesterday, and the coaching debut of Rick Vernon, in the 13-3 win at Coolspring. A pair of five-run innings, coupled with a 14-hit offense led by Dick Invin, added up to the seventh win in a row in a still unbeaten season for the Falcons.

Irwm drove in four runs with two singles and a two- run homer. Greg Pastors added three hits, and Dan Lowe a double and single, plus his customary walk. The Falcons tagged starter and loser Don Means for 11 of their hits and 9 runs, before he gave way to Bruce Byers in the fourth. Green went the first five innings for the Falcons, and gave up a hit and two runs in the third, when he encountered a spot of control trouble. Mathews made his first pitching appearance, taking over in the sixth, and giving up a run on three hits.

The Mustang total included doubles by Frankhouser and Bob Yablonowsky. Connellsville led 2-0 its First time at bat on singles by Jim Spargur, Pastors, and Irwin, around Rick Broadwater's sacrifice, and an error. It was 7-0 in the third on singles by Pastors, Irwin, Mike Tremba, Bill Hardy, and Green, and an error, all adding up to five runs laurel Highlands made its first scoring move of the season in the home third. Green retired the first six batters to face him, four in a row on grounders to short. Ixiwe had all six putouts at first, one unassisted, one from Broadwater, and four from Pastors.

Then Green issued all three of his walks in a row, to Jeff Williams, Scott Anderson, and Barr Bodkin, to start the third. Williams and Anderson scored as Jim Yarns and Frankhouser hit into force plays. Means had the only hit off Green in the third, a bouncer into the hole at short that Pastors knocked down, but couldn't make a play. Green then retired in a row the last six batters he faced, four of them on successive strikeouts. The Falcons had another 5- run spree the fourth, hiking their lead to 12-2.

Pastors singled to lead off, and Irwin's high drive to left-center was over the only gap in the fence. But it would still have been a homer, even with that spot filled. That was all for Means, and Byers took over. Tremba walked, and went to third on Lowe's single. Joe Trafecanty ran for Lowe, and when the hangup play was tried, Tremba scored and Trafecanty was tagged.

Hardy and Ron Hughes walked, and two errors, around Spargur's flyball to center, made it 12-2. It was 13-2 in the sixth when Ixwe hit to the fence in center leading off, and scored on George Eutsey's single. Mathews was pitching for CAHS in the home sixth, when the Mustangs got their final run. Frankhouser hit a one out double to the fence in left, and scored on Means' single. LOUIS (UPI) Bill Bangert, mayor of the suburban village of Champ, Tuesday challenged this year's NCAA champions in field events to compete with him in a special Scottish throwing event July 6.

"We'll see whether they can beat an old man." said the 52- year-old Bangert. 'Til show them the answer to the Age of Aquarius." The athletes whom Bangert plans to invite to Champ will be winners of individual titles at the June 5 NCAA championships at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Bangert, a former champion shot putter and discus thrower, said be will attend the NCAA events and extend the invitations to the young athletes at that time. "I'm sure I'll be able to get them to come," he said. 'Tm offering the winner a free trip to Hawaii to compete in the Hawaiian-Scottish Games in October." Bangert's competition in Champ will be in six throwing events, the 28-pound hammer, the 28-pound ball and chain, the 28-pound stone, the caber and the 56-pound weight.

The 56- pound weight is two throws for separate measuresments of height and distance. Bangert explained that each contestant will get four throws in each event for a total of 24 throws with all of the distances added together to calculate a contestant's score. The total weight involved in all throws adds up to one ton. Bangert has asked the federal government for $500 in revenue- sharing money to buy a stainless steel flagpole, 21 feet long and weighing 150 pounds. His plan is to use it for a flagpole for the opening ceremonies, then remove the flag and use the pole for the caber throw The reason Bangert has asked for revenue-sharing money for the flagpole is because "Champ has never received one dime before in revenue-sharing funds.

We feel that the sharing of government monies should be nondiscriminaUng." Bangert founded Champ in 1959 with the hope of making it the site of a future Olympic Games. He has been trying to develop the land as an industrial park. Franklin Reg. Nips Southmoreland, 3-2, By Sweeping Doubles Franklin Regional's tennis team played double or nothing and edged visiting South- moreland, 3-2. Coach Jerry Firestone's Scotties (0-2) won two singles, and had a 2-1 lead going into the doubles.

But Franklin swept both doubles and pulled out the come-from-behind win, with everything decided in pro sets. Franklin led 1-0 when Chve Bramham beat Scott Lewis, 103. Then the Scotties led when Dirk Miller beat Andy Forsty, 10-9, and Bull Gula downed Mike Arenz, 10-7. But Forsty and Pat Kolmer got Franklin a tie by edging and Miller, 10-8, then Bramham and Sjrogen scored the clinching point with a 10-0 collar on Gula and Chip Blnhm. a a scheduled to begin section play today at Uniontown.

See What Silly 'Equal' Decision By Court Causes SM Late Comeback Nets LANGBORNE, Pa. (UPI) A Bucks County school board may seek to bar five high school girig boys' intnracholafltic teams-football players competing for berths on the girls' softball John Straiten, president of the Nesbaminy School Board, said the grid quintet at Nasaaininy-Langborne Senior High School may have been encouraged by the coaches of boy's teams. Stratum said a board meeting scheduled for tonight "is likely to see the board ask the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) to appeal the Commonwealth Court's ruling on interscholastic sports. "And the board is also likely to decide to defy a PIAA Board of Control ruling that the court's order be accepted immediately." Though the state court's ruling specifically lifted the bar Bullskhi League Try outs Slated Tryouts have been rescheduled for all new prospects in the Ballskm Twp. Youth leagues.

They will be held Saturday, from noon until 2 p.m., at the Bullskin Elementary School, supervised by managers and coaches of the leagues. Tuesday's NBA Chicago 98 Buffalo 93 New York 99 Philadelphia 95 Stratton said the board's solicitor has a double application. "The solicitor believes the court ruling applies to both boys' and girls' athletics alike," Stratton said. Stratton said he was "concerned that the effort to have young men go out for girls' teams is an overreaction by the coaching fraternity to some degree and can potenfiaflv laoit the opportunities for girls to compete at high school teveL "Some of these young men have said they have the support of their coaches," Stratton said. The five include Paul SaJ- vatore, Chris McCleary, Jon Locke, BiO Mitzel and Kevin O'DonneU, all members of the Neshammy-Langhome varsity football squad.

Stratton said be is "very sympathetic to the cause of women's athletics, and I think in years past they've been discriminated against "We've not spent enough money, given enough publicity or created enough opportunities for women athletes, and I think women ought to be allowed to compete in all sports. in every 10 years, perhaps, there may be a 'girl gifted in kicking points after touchdown in football. But if the young men are allowed to go in and dominate what have been all-girl teams, that is disruptive to the program." Chicago Lost NBA Hope for Milwaukee By DAVE BEGEL United Press International Milwaukee will be tuned in and listening very closely to the Chicago-Detroit game on radio tonight The Bucks came through with a 98-91 triumph over Detroit Tuesday night but the victory will mean nothing for them if the Pistons can beat Chicago tonight. Although the Bucks and Pistons played one of the most exciting games of the season, both clubs had their minds on tonight's crucial matchup. The victory kept Milwaukee's sum playoff hopes alive.

They have three games left--with New York Friday, Detroit Saturday and Chicago Sunday. The Pistons have two left- Chicago and then Milwaukee on Saturday. The Bucks must win their three and Detroit has to lose its two if the Bucks are to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time in five years. "I just hope Chicago goes all out and plays like they should," Bucks Coach Larry Costello said. "Unfortunately, hope is all we have left.

Let's hope somehow it happens." The Pistons seemed in control most of the game and although the Bucks led, 72-69, going into the last quarter, Detroit rallied to take the lead, 8544. But then the Milwaukee defense held the Pistons scoreless for almost three minutes and reserve forward Mickey Davis got Milwaukee moving. The Bucks were led by Kareem Abdnl-Jabbar's 27 points. Bob Lanier had 19 and John Mengelt 18 for Detroit Elsewhere, Chicago beat Buffalo, 98-93, Houston downed Atlanta, 113-104, New York edged Philadelphia, 99-95, Washington defeated New Orleans, 110-101, and Portland ripped Los Angeles, 124-106. Bulls 98, Braves 93: Chet Walker's 24 points led six Bulls in double figures as Chicago ended a three-game tailspin and halted the Braves' five game winning streak.

The Bulls took a two-game lead over idle Kansas City-Omaha in the Midwest Division with three games left Bob McAdoo, who has won his second straight scoring title, paced Buffalo with 36 points. Rockets 113, Hawks 184: Seven-footer Kevin Kunnert hit 26 points and Rudy Tom- janovich had 27 as Houston beat Atlanta and virtually clinched a playoff spot Houston leads idle Cleveland by one game for the second-place spot in the NBA Central Division with one game to play. Bullets 111, Jazz 111: Washington, with Elvin Hayes sinking 33 points, maintained its sum lead over Boston for the best record in the NBA by beating New Orleans. Pete Maravich led the Jazz with 19 points. Blazers 124, Lakers IN: Sidney Wicks scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for Portland.

Los Angeles, which had won eight of its last 12 games, played without injured center Elmore Smith and his absence proved to be the difference. The victory was the 36th for third-place Portland, the most in its five-year history. Rtptxrt ST. The New York Yankees gained a left-handed hitting reserve catcher Tuesday but may have lost a switch-hitting first baseman. The wheeling-and-dealing Yankees, apparently not content with off-season acquisitions Catfish Hunter and Bobby Bonds, moved to back up first string catcher Thurman Manson by acquiring lefty-hitting backstop Ed Herrmann, 28, from the Chicago White Sox Tuesday for four minor leaguers. For Herrmann, who caught 100 or more games for Chicago in each of the last four seasons and last year hit .259 with 10 homers and 39 RBIs, the Yankees gave up southpaw Fred Anyeski, outfielder-first baseman John Marron, outfielder Ken Bennett and catcher Terry Quinn, plus cash. However, fast on the heels of the Herrmann acquisition, came the news that switch- hitting Roy White, last year's leftfielder and frequent designated hitter, would be sidelined for at least a week with a chip fracture in his left thumb. White, who had been making a fairly successful transition to first base this spring, was injured after diving for a ground ball Monday during an exhibition game between the Yanks and Minnesota.

X-rays revealed a fracture and it was believed that White would likely miss the Yankees' opener versus Cleveland. Basis of the Herrmann deal was the catcher's refusal to sign a contract with the White Sox after asking for $52,000 and being offered $48,000. He agreed to $50,000 with the Yankees and, ironically, may wind up as the club's opening day first baseman in the wake of White's injury. In other spring training The New York Mets optioned catcher Ron Hodges to Tidewater, thus opening up a spot for John Steams, the highly rated "throw-in" in the Tug McGraw for Del Unser trade with Philadelphia last winter. Stearns, a former No.

CAHS Track Parents List Initial Muting The first meeting of the spring wffl be held by the Falcon Track Parents Assn. at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, in Room 213 of the Senior High School Membership is open to parents No two days are ever the same in any walk of fife, just as no two games with one opponent are ever the same. And that's what makes sports 90 interesting, but often leads to early grayness among coaches. For instance, there's the home and home baseball aeries between Frazier and German Twp.

On Monday, Frazier had an easy time aa two pitchers combined to work a no-bitter, and the Commodores took home an S-l win. But the rematch yesterday at Ferryopoiis was something else. Coach Joe Gessner's Commodores had to not only come from behind in the sixth inning, they had to utilize some alert baterunning with two-out thunder, to gain a 94 win over the visiting Uhlans and complete a sweep of their series. "I tried to impress on them (his players) that just because they had an easy win on Monday that didn't mean they would have the same thing on Tuesday," Coach Gessner added. "German might have lost to us on Monday, but they hit some sharp drives at us, and I figured they would be trouble the second time around.

German could cause some trouble in their section before the season is over." Frarier struck for six runs in the last of the sixth, utilizing some daring base running in the process, to get the lead, then had to hold off a push by the Uhlans in the top of the seventh, before clinching their third win in as many starts. Karl Sezawich and Mark Byers combined to burl the win for Frazier, Byers getting the decision. Sichko had a double and two singles, Zimcosky a double, and Bailey a single and solo homer in the sixth to pace the 10-hit Uhlan offense. Frazier collected 11 hits off two German pitchers, Rozak being tagged with the loss. Byers had two singles, Tom Liptak a double and single, Mike Logoyda a double, and George Hancherik a triple.

Frazier scored in the second when Sezawich was nicked by a pitch and came around on two errors and Gary Kosport's sacrifice fly. That left the Commodores down 2-1, and they went ahead 3-2 in the fourth with a pair of runs. Mark Rabatin S. Side Playground Closed For Repairs South Side Playground has been temporarily closed to make needed repairs there. The site will be out of operation for about two weeks, according to Richard Tikey, supervisor of maintenance for the city recreation board.

It was suggested that those wanting to play basketball utilize the Cameron or West Side sites until South Side is again in operation. Announcement will be made when the facilities are again ready for use. Houston 113 Atlanta 1M Portland 124 LOB Aneeles 106 the Reds to an 8-2 victory over theMets. walked, Kosport singled, Liptak doubled, and Harvey hit a sacrifice fly, to pot the home team ahead. German regained the lead 4-3 in the fifth on Zuncoakys double, Sichko's single, an out, and Mike Mgpfhag' sacrifice fly. Bailey's homer made it 5-3 going into the last of the sixth. Then Frazier struck-- with two out Liptak beat out an infield hit to give the Commodores new life. Harvey walked, and Hancherik was purposely passed to load the bases.

Chuck Morozek walked to force in Liptak, then Kevin Stricklin beat out a slow infield roller that allowed Harvey to score. Hancherik, running on the two- out roller, kept on running, and scored all the way from second. Morozek was on second and Stricklin on first, then Byers beat out another slow roller, and Morozek-- running with the hit-- also legged it in from second, beating the throw to the plate. The throw enabled Stricklin and Byers to move around to third and second respectively, and Mark Rabatin sent them both home with a single up the middle, giving the Commodores a 9-5 lead. That turned out to be the big hit, for German came right back with three in the top of the seventh.

Oziemblowsky was hit by a pitch, then Rozak, Manchas, and Gary Jesso singled around an out. When Manchas tried to score on Jesse's hit, ho was cut down al the plate on the defensive play of the game, Scofield firing from rightfield to Liptak, who relayed to Morozek at the plate for the tag. Bailey's single sent home Jesse with the eighth Uhlan run, before the side was retired. Frazier is scheduled to play Jefferson-Morgan today, although the site is now undetermined. It was first scheduled for Jefferson, but at last reports bad been switched to Perryopolis.

(UPI) -Manager Danny Murtaugh liked the way rookie Jim Minshall looked in pitching against the Chicago White Sox Tuesday although Minshall was the losing pitcher. Minshall went three scoreless innings in the opener of the donbleheader with the Sox but in the fourth he gave up four unearned runs. That didn't bother Murtaugh.

"He made the hitters hit the ball on the ground and that's a big plus when you're looking at a relief pitcher," Murtaugh said. The Pirates put lefty Ken Brett, who has an ailing elbow on his pitching arm, on the 21- day disabled list Tuesday. Murtaugh must now cut four players and only one pitcher out of Minshall, Wayne Simpson, Jim Ray and Jim Sadowski will be kept Perhaps Minshall will be the one to stay. Errors by Mario Mendoza, Manny Sanguillen and a poor throw by Art Howe allowed the runs to score off Minshall in the fourth as the Sox won the game, 4-1. The Pirates won the nightcap, 6-3.

General Manager Joe L. Brown asked the league office to put Brett on the disabled list retroactive to last Tuesday when he injured his arm in the first inning while pitching against the New York Mets. If Brown's request is granted, Brett would be eligible to pitch one week after the season begins if his arm showed enough improvemenL Brett, who underwent surgery last November for bone chips, will accompany the Pirates to Chicago Tuesday for the season opener against the Cubs. Wilbur Wood went the seven- inning route to help the White Sox win the opener. But the Pirates clubbed Jack Kucek for all six runs in the second inning to win the nine- inning nightcap.

Pitcher Wayne Simpson's three-run double and Rennie Stennett's triple highlighted Pittsburgh's early second game knockout of Kucek, who walked three and forced in one of the runs. Carlos May's double was the only hit given up by Minshall in the disastrous fourth. Wood gave up five hits and didn't issue a walk..
