MNr 334.1131, fcct. 17 Jack Nicklaus Says Others Claim He's "Over The Hill" But He Keeps On Winning By HUBERT MIZELL Associated Press Sports Writer MIAMI, Fla. (AP) You remember Jack Nicklaus--the 30- year-old golfer that fellow pro Frank Beard, in his book, said was washed up.

"That's the same hogwash I've been listening to for three years," frowned Nicklaus. "I was over the hill at 27, at 28 and at 29. Now I'm through at real trouble. My putting wasn't super. I used as many strokes on the big greens as I did off them." The greens at the St.

Andrews Old Course average six While Beard, yet to win a major title, remained in the United States, the trimmed-down Nicklaus edged Doug Sanders in a playoff for the British Open championship at classic old St. Andrews, Scotland. TRY TO WIN "Any golfer worth his salt has to cross the sea and try to win the British Open," Nicklaus said, fingering the 98-year-old British Open trophy. "When you drive up to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, you have to be motivated." Beard wrote in his book that Jack's links desire had waned. That he didn't work at it any longer.

That the incentive just wasn't there. "I am 30 and have won 10 major championships," Nicklaus said, pushing back overgrown blond hair. "Bobby Jones, the biggest name in golf history, won a record 13." "I plan to win 14 and keep on going." "FIGHTING CHAMPION" It was only by the grace of Sanders' errant putter that Nicklaus had a shot at his second British crown. Doug blew a three-footer in Saturday's final round on No. 18, sending the classic into a playoff, Nicklaus, as the boxing buffs say, will be a "fighting champion." He will play this week's Philadelphia Classic and keep going for another four weeks without a rest.

"I played the test 72 holes of my life--from tee to St. Andrews," he said following a nine hour flight from London acres in size, compared to three acres en United States courses. Nicklaus feels his previous major titles came in such rapid- fire fashion that, "I didn't fully realize the importance. Then after going three years without such a victory, I am suddenly absorbing the 100 per cent meaning." WEEK TO UNWIND "It'll take me a week, to unwind from this win," he continued. "I can't see how I'll be up for the Philadelphia tournament, but I'd like to be." The ancient British Open trophy, bearing golf's most famous names of the past century, was still in two parts when the Nick- lauses arrived back home.

Tony Jacklin, who won the 1969 title, had lost the key to its case and officials had to force open the lock. "I guess Tony didn't mean to lose it again," said Jack. "His name hadn't even been engraved on it. Neither had Gary Player's By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS American League East Division W. L.

"No bad drives, no Jackson Hopes To Return To Hitting Days By ERIC PREWITT Associated Press Sports Writer OAKLAND (AP) "I'm a good hitter, I believe that. I'm not a .220 hitter," said Reggie Jackson.

A year ago, the young Oakland Athletics' outfielder was looking forward to his first All- Star Game. He was racing the historic home run paces of Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. Tonight, he'll be home when the All-Stars play in Cincinnati. "I didn't enjoy playing in the All-Star game as much as I enjoyed just being there to watch it," he said last week. "GREAT TO SEE" "It's great to see all those players together on one field." Jackson was the hottest thing in baseball when the All-Stars gathered last July in Washington.

He had 37 home 'runs at the time and was six games ahead of Maris' 1961 pace that resulted in a record 61 homers. Now, he's just a struggling 24-year-old hitter "in a terrible, terrible slump." As the season hit the halfway mark, he had 12 homers, 34 runs' batted in and was batting 225. Jackson makes one thing plain. He plans to return to all- star status as a power hitter or not at all. "ALL SAID NO" "I've asked Manager John McNamara and several other people if I should cut down on my swing.

They all said no. "That's not the kind of hitter I am. I've got a swing like Harmon Killebrew's, like Frank Howard's. I've got to swing like Reggie." Jackson's hitting troubles actually began in the last half of the 1969 season. He had only 10 homers after the All-Star break.

He had 118 RBI for the season and batted .275. Instead of going to Cincinnati Monday, the Chicago Cub slugger packed up, picked up Tom McCraw of the Chicago White Sox and headed for a Wisconsin fishing holiday. Palmer, whose strong righ arm hopefully will provide the impetus for an American League challenge to the Nation al's seven-year Ail-Star reign, is more concerned about balls thai don't bounce. And he has 14f good reasons to worry. PROLIFIC HITTERS Lined up against Palmer on the Astroturf of glossy Riverfront Stadium, new home of the Cincinnati Reds, will be six of the game's most prolific long ball hitters--San Francisco's Willie Mays, St. Louis' Richie Allen, Atlanta's Hank Aaron.

Cincinnati's Tony Perez, Rico Carty of the Braves and Johnny Bench of the Reds. They have belted a total of 148 home runs this season while batting an aggregate .313. Wage Dispute May Halt Pro College Game KANSAS CITY (AP) Coach Hank Stram of the professional football champion Chiefs indicates the Kansas City-College All-Star game July 31 in Chicago may be jeopardized if differences between club owners and the National Football League Players Association are not resolved soon. Stram said "We'll go on the assumption that we'll be able to play a game providing we have enough people and time, and providing we'll be physically and artistically prepared." Stram commented at the Chiefs training camp in Liberty, a Kansas City suburb. About three dozen rookies checked into the camp Monday.

Team veterans held a meeting Monday evening presumably to discuss their lockout at the training camp. Stram said he was hopeful a settlement could be reached to allow the veterans to join the camp by Wednesday morning. Expect Return To Davis Cup Tennis JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP)--Alf Chalmers, president of the South African Lawn Tennis Union, returned Monday from the Paris meeting of the International Tennis Federation and said his country's position in world tennis now is stronger than for many years. Following the meeting, at which a move to expel South Africa was overwhelmingly defeated Chalmers said: "I am aiow firmly convinced that our re-entry into the Davis Cup is not far off." South Africa was barred from the 1970 Davis Cup tournament on the grounds of racial discrimination in sport. had to make a tough choice.

He could have taken Williams or teammate Jim Hickrnan, who in nine years never came close to making an All-Star team. Hodges chose Hickman at the apparent expense of Williams. Cub Manager Leo Durocher chose not to get in on any controversy and said "Williams is some kind of player who is having some kind of a year and I'm just tickled pink that Hickman made the team." 1,067 Games Williams, who has a current record streak of 1,067 consecutive games going, had mixed emotions on being left off the squad. The Netherlands are one of the world's largest exporters of eggs and dairy products, having no natural resources except coal. "I didn't give it much thought a couple of weeks ago," said Williams "and really didn't care to play because I need the rest.

Then I got into that hrt streak. "When I wasn't selected I looked at my credentials and thought 'What does a guy have to do to make it'. I guess you could say I'm a little disappointed only because when you make the team you know you're with the best. CAN USE THE REST "But on the other hand, I'm tired and I can really use the rest," said Williams. "I've got all the fishing gear packed and Tommy and I are going to have a lot of fun fishing." Williams, whose 26 home runs tie him for third place hi the major leagues and whose 80 RBIs are second only to Tony Perez of Cincinnati who has 90, has had only one hit in seven All- Star at bats but that was a homer in 1964 to help the Nationals score a 7-4 victory in New York.

Palmer, 12-6, will be making his All-Star debut. He got the starting nod from AL Manager Earl Weaver of the Orioles because of the National's predominantly right-hand hitting lineup. All of the NL starters swing from the right side except shortstop Don Kessinger, a switcher.

Weaver, who intends to follow Palmer with southpaw Sam McDowell of Cleveland' and right-hander Jim Perry of Minnesota, hopes the early right4o-right ratio will be to his club's advantage.
