DAILY NEWS ENTERTAINMENTC 13 zn 3 EXTRA Saturday, July 27, 1991 'Another Vou'? Hon about 'nattier script? By HARRY HAUN Daily News Staff Writer ANOTHER YOU. Richard Pryor. Gene Wilder. Directed by Maurice Phillips. Area theaters. Time: 98 mm. Rated R. irpHE TWO STARS FOR 'ANOTH-1 1 er You" are for the two stars of U "Another You" Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, a proven comedy team hard-pressed here with a script locked on zero. The premise pairs pathological liar Wilder with professional con-man Pryor (ducking jail with community service namely, conveniently, shepherding j Wilder back into soci- ety). Unfortunately, REVI EW Ziggy Steinberg's script conspires to keep Wilder dishonest even to the implausible extreme of making him the innocent centerpiece of a larger scam. Wilder and Pryor pull the plot along like Volga boatmen, achieving their best 3 .o .,,. Gene Wilder & Richard Pryor moments individually (Pryor brazening out a jazz-sax solo, Wilder yodehng). Mercedes Ruehl and Vanessa Williams are, by turns, funny and fun. Most of the movie's energy is Wilder's; Pryor looks unwell and moves in lunges. Switching directors in mid-film from Peter Bogdanovich to Maurice Phillips hasn't made this fourth team outing any less bumpy a ride. From this point, it looks as if there wont be "Another You" or, better yet, there shouldn't be. 'Lucia' saves conductor from mad scene By BERT WECHSLER EXCEPT FOR A RADIANT PER-formance from his soprano, conductor Vincent La Selva did not have an easy Wednesday evening. His New York Grand Opera presented Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" on Central Park's Summerstage, an edi- fice festooned with essH commercials. There REVIEW was trouble with the light generator, his scene shifters were lethargic, his baritone couldn't count, and his tenor was having an off night But there was the soprano. Christina Andreou sang Lucia She was a bit obsessed with correctness in her first act double aria, but after that she sang like a dream. She is a true coloratura with high notes to burn, and scales of a crystalline purity. It was a grand old-fashioned Mad Scene: flow ing hair, falling flowers, two faints and a precise duet with the flute. Alas, Enrico di Giuseppe, as Edgardo, appeared with hoarseness and a bleat His usual free, easy high notes were not with him; still, it was good to watch a stage-smart actor. Having missed his entrance in his first aria, and having had a hell of a time then finding his place, raw-voiced Enzo Bordim learned his lesson and sang all of Enrico's music staring at La Selva who handed him every note. When they could concentrate on Donizetti, in Andreou and di Giuseppe's scenes, La Selva and the orchestra did wonders. And the chorus sang valiantly. Wednesday at 7:30, it's "Carmen." The disasters should be minimized, so I'd go out to Summerstage if I were you. 2 1 m mm mm inn - mm i mm mm - mm mm w mm - I r KUNHATTAN I I0EWSAST0R PLAZA 44TM STREET WEST OF BROADWAY 8698340 12:40. 3.5-30.8. 10 JO CINFPtfK OOEON CHELSEA CINEMAS 23RD ST BET. 7TH 4 8TH AVE. 69 1 4744 12:30. 2:4$. 5. 7 IS. 30, 1145 CITY CINEMAS CINEPLEY OOEON CINEMA 2 OLYMPIA CINEMAS 3RD AVENUE AT 60TM STREET SROAOWAf ANO I07TM ST. 7530774 8658128 12:15. 2:25.4:35. &4S. 8:55. 11 1. 3:10. 5:20. 7 45. 1015 CITY CINEMAS CREATIVE ENT.
