Women Ask more beneficial than harmful B)' ELEANOR RODGERSON, Copley News Service Q. As the years pass, are there more, or (ewer side ef- A. The side effects of oral contraceptives vary. Some have turned up unexpectedly and some thought to be important at the start have disappeared. For examples- A recent two-year study of 23,000 Pill users in Great Britain have found no evidence of any increase in cancer.

There also are fewer ovarian cysts and fewer cases of increased benign (noncancerous) breast disease. Women who normally have heavy menstrual periods find them shortened and, conse- quenUy, develop less anemia. A good percentage who ordinarily have uncomfortable premenstrual symptoms, now 207 South Marietta Street Gastonia, N.C. have these eliminated. In addition, menstrua! cramps are often relieved.

Women who have had irregular menstrual histories before starting the Pill are likely to be the ones with amenor- rhea (no menses) for varying numbers of months afterward. If a woman now wants a pregnancy, this delay of ovulation is distressing. No one has found evidence that pregnancies following the use of the contraceptives have been affected. A number of users have noticed an increase in depression and a few have a decrease in sexual desire. Both British and U.S.

studies report increases in blood pressure, higher the longer the Pill is used, depending somewhat upon the age of the user. There is a five-to-six times increase in clotting, in the British study, in the deep veins of the leg and a 50 per cent increase in the superficial veins of the leg. This series compared 23,000 Pill users with 23,000 nonusers. These side effects are less with lower dosage estrogen Pills. The thrombosis (clotting) appears in certain people with no regard to the length of time the oral contraceptives have been taken.

There is more gall bladder disease in women on the Pill and more gallstones. Of course, women fair, fat, and have always had more gall bladder disease than men. THE GASTONIA GAZETTE, Aug. 25. Best of Abby Advise easier to give than take DEAR ABBY: My husband is a physician who has just passed his 50th birthday. He tells all his male patients who reach 50 to "slow down." If they smoke, he orders them to quit or cut down, but UK'S a two-pack-a-day man. He puts all his overweight patients on diets. But HE is considerably overweight himself and can't stay on a diet for two days.

He insists that daily exercise is a MUST, but HE doesn't exercise at all. He says that an annual vacation away from one's daily work is essential to good health, but HE hasn't had a vacation in six years. And this will floor you. HE wants all his patients to have a thoro check-up every year, but HE hasn't had one since he was in service in World War 11. What's wrong with him and how can I get thru to him? DOCTOR'S WIFE DEAR WIFE: He's human.

He finds advice much easier to than 10 take. You can get thru' to him (maybe) by insisting that HE consult a colleague for a check-up. And if he refuses, ask him to keep paying those life insurance premiums, so you and your next husband can retire in luxury. DEAR ABBY: My husband grew up jn Kansas City, Missouri, which is where we spent the first 12 years of our married life. Then he got transferred to St.

Louis. We still have lots of friends back In Kansas City, so we go there for week-ends and vacations quite often. My question: Should we call up our friends when we get to Kansas City or should they call us? Everyone knows in advance when we are coming and how long we're staying, because my husband's mother lives in Kansas City and she has a big mouth. Since our friends know we're in town and where we're staying, shouldn't they call us? Or should we call them? BETWIXT DEAR BETWIXT: Call those. you want to sec.

A big mouth cannot always be relied upon to get the word to the right people. DEAR ABBY: Our daughter, age 22, is being married to a 30-year-old man who was married before. His marriage lasted less than two years, no children, and this is our daughter's first marriage. I should add. he is a well-to-do man from a socially prominent family.

The problem: We want to give our daughter a lovely big church wedding. Her fiance's parents say thai they will attend, but they will not send any of their friends or relatives invitations to this wedding even a t. afterwards. This reason: "All of our friends and relatives have given wedding presents on the occasion of our son's first wedding, and once is enough." Abbyi do you think this is right? What has our daughter to do with the wedding gifts his first bride received? Do you think they have the right to cut down on. the number of lovely gifts she shall receive just because her finance was married before? THEGIRLS'S MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: An invitation (or announcement) is not always a bid for gift, although most people think it is.

But if the parents of the groom don't wish to send invitations or announcements for this or any other reason, it is up lo them. 4- DEAR ABBY: My wife and 1 have been divorced for 2.years. We have two very mature and sophisticated children, a boy, 10, and a girl, 12, who live in New York with their mother. I have a very nice beach home in southern California, and have a ladyfriend living with me. My ex-wife is aware of this but my children arc not.

In our settlement, my wife agreed to let me have the children for 2 weeks in the summer. Now she refuses to send them to me because she doesn't want them to visit a father who is living "in sin" with another woman. I say. "Children should be taught the realities of life, and I don't intend to put up any phony puritanical front." My ladyfriend is not a cheap floox.ie. She's a fine European woman with sufficient charm and intelligence to hold a man without insisting on marriage, which is more than can be said of most American women.

How can I make my ex-wife see it my way? I miss my children. DEPRIVED DEAR DEPRIVED: You probably can't, which is just as agree with your ex-wife. Your ''mature and sophisticated" children will learn the realities of life soon enough, so allow them their illusions a while longer. And it you really "miss" your children, tell your "tine European ladyfriend" to get lost for 2 weeks. durham DANCING SCHOOL 212 South Broad Street 1 Registration TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd 10:00 a.m.
