Yeltsin, who made his political comeback by railing against official privileges, found himself facing the issue Friday on his first day back at "work after a car crash. Yeltsin, limping slightly, officially resumed work at the Russian republic parliament by opening a committee meeting. He had been hurt in a road accident Sept. 12 near his office and had been recovering at home, Tass reported.

The accident stirred debate in the Russian parliament over giving the republic leader a special car for safer transportation. He had been riding in a Soviet-built Volga sedan. After the accident, Russian officials ordered four armor-plated luxury cars for Yeltsin and his prime minister, Ivan Silayev, from Gorky Auto Works plant. But the plant refused, saying it only made such cars for national leaders. British newspapers last week reported Yeltsin would swap his car for an armor-plated Mercedes Benz.

Russian republic officials quickly denied the report, saying they had received no such offer. The latest wrinkle came Friday, when the labor newspaper Trad reported thelConaly motor works east of Moscow, which makes armored vans for banks, has offered to build safe, "comfortable" cars for Yeltsin and his prime ininister, Ivan Silayev. The newspaper did not say whether Yeltsin accepted the offer. NEW YORK (AP) Cher and Madonna have a few tilings in common i successful singing career, movie stardom and Warren Beatty.
