By GAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor NEW YORK (UPI) Little things mean a lot in fall ready-to-wear for women. Beneath all the talk about bulk, about knees going "ncath hemlines, there are dozens of details to help a woman do her own thing in dr ess. For instance, there have been those who say that pants are on their last legs.

Not so! Certainly, the woman who wants the skirted look has plenty of choice from slim to full, from flared to dirndl. But Jim Baldwin, a fresh spirit in the garment industry, says pants, pants, pants, just as important as ever. I think pants and especially separates were never bigger." Then there's the designer who believes skirts should not be sweater with its own knitted-inmuff Instead of the traditional pockets, a center front area at the waistline was a double layer, die outer one open for inserting chilly hands. Sweaters look like bulky coats, the twin set is back, and the sleeveless pullover is the classic that goes over shirts or long-sleeved sweaters. You'll see a lot of play with pattern with ministripes.

Designers use familiar materials in new ways. There is for instance macrame (made of knotted cord) for trim or for jackets. hemmed (some coat manufacturers already are skipping the hem, but stitching the bottom Adri of New York said that she found in working on low flaring skirts that they "hang much better, are more fluid and more flattering with no hems Skirt bottoms are stitched like men's shirts. A woman tries on the skirt either wears it as it is or cuts it off to her pleasure and restitches it." Practical9 Certainly for the woman who forever is having to pay the price of alterations on hemlines.

This could be called the year the sweater csme into its own all over again. Preferably, it's long, down to the hips, but not bagging. One neat trick spotted at the two weeks of fashion shows (drawing to a close) for the nation's visiting reporters was the "I feel sorry for men on chilly days like this." so simple to sew!
