Defending champion Lee Tre-vino and 1969 winner Tony Jacklin of England, co-leaders of one-under par 141 after Thursday's play, were last of the 44 pairs off today, but the forecasters promise the weather will hold. Grand slam chaser Jack Nicklaus, who like the others has failed to really burn up the course, much to his chagrin, shortened to 2-1 favorite in toda's betting list. He was one stroke behind on 142 along with six others.

Trevino and Jacklin were at 5-1, with 142, shooters Gary-Player at 7-1, Doug Sanders at 12-1, and Johnny Miller 16-1. Shearer knocked in a 12-footer for his birdie at the first and after a bogey at the second, where he accidentally moved his ball when preparing to putt, hit a great sand wedge four feet from the hole and sank it for a birdie. He found disaster at the par-three 7th, taking a five after struggling in two sand traps, but reached the long ninth in By JOE NAGLE MUIRFIELD, Scotland (UPI)-Australian Bob Shearer, who started 77-75, cashed in on perfect conditions at sun-baked Muirfield today with a three-under par 68 in the third round of the British Open Golf Championship. The 24-year-old from Melbourne, first man off among the 88 survivors, put together halves of 36-32 for a 54-hoie total of 220, seven over par. If the tournament leaders, all late starters, can follow the Aussie's example and at last get to grips the right rough 120 yards further on and crashed a wedge through the green.

Then, from the short rough at the back of the green he chipped nervously short and watched aghast as the ball trickled into a trap. It took three more shots, a sand blast and two putts, to bring the nightmare to an end. "It was not bad luck, just bad management," Sanders said with a brave attempt at a smile. "There's one thing about me at the British Open. You've got to admit I get 'em excited," he said.

to start today's third round with a comfortable lead. Instead, because ot one unbelievable hole the very last of an incredibly dramatic round Thursday he trailed leaders Tony Jacklin and Lee Trevino by one stroke. Nicklaus was alongside Sanders on a 142 total together with five other challengers for the prestigious title, and happy to be so. It seemed his rivals were doing their best to help big Jack towards the third leg of his Grand Slam bid, letting him get away with a second mediocre round. tefendir.g champion Trevino was equally satisfied with his 141 total after a one-under par 70, but Jacklin had every reason to complain about the fickle golfing gods enroute to a 72.

But it was Sanders, unlucky or "stupid," as he called it who wrote most indelibly in the book of misfortune. Three-under-par with one to play, he blew the lot at the 18th hole. He hit his drive at the 18th into a fairway trap on the right; knocked his second into two to set up another birdie. After dropping a shot at the 11th, Shearer racked up three birdies in a row with a 6-footer at the 12th, a 25-footer at the 13th and a 10-footer at the 14th. Disappointment followed his eagle at 17, for the youngster missed a par putt from 4-feet on the home green after blasting out brilliantly from a greenside trap, but his inward 32 was the best of the tournament to date.

The Tigers staked Lolich to a 5-0 lead when they sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and Mickey protected the shutout until the eighth when the Royals scored a run on Richie Scheinblum's single, Lou Piniella's double and a fielder's choice. Ninth-inning homers by Amos Otis and Scheinblum produced the final three Kansas City runs.

The key hits of Detroit's big first By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer Mickey Lolich, the major leagues' first 15-game winner of the current season, shrugs off suggestions that he may wind up in the 30-victory class. "Mathematically, it's possible," said the pot-bellied Detroit Tiger left-hander after beating the Kansas City Royals, 6-4, Thursday night and raising his record to 15-6. "But physically, it isn't." Lolich, a 25-game winner in 1971 when he led the American League in eight pitching classifications, pointed out that he can expect "only" 18 or 19 more starting assignments this season. "It's not enough," Lolich said. "It's unrealistic to figure that any pitcher will go 15-3 or 15-4 for a half season." inning were singles by Eddie Brinkman and Willie Horton and a double by Ike Brown.

Rich Reese's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth-inning outburst which gave the Twins an 8-0 lead and Ray Corbin breezed behind the big margin to a six-hitter and his second victory. Ray Culp took the loss. The Rangers scored four runs in the first inning with the help of Hal King's two-run windblown double and Rich Hand pitched a six-hitter for his seventh victory. Milt Wilcox was the loser. Gary Nolan and Clay Carroll combined to shut out the Pirates with Nolan raising his record to 13-2.

He struck out seven and walked one before bowing out for a pinch-hitter after eight innings. Cesar Geronimo's homer gave the Reds their first run in the fifth and they added their other run in the eighth when Pete Rose doubled and eventually scored on Bobby Tolan's sacrifice fly. Reggie Cleveland pitched a two-hitter for his seventh victory, raising his record to 11-4 for the Cardinals. Cleveland singled in the Cardinals' second run in the seventh after Matty Alou's double, a single by Ted Simmons and an infield out produced St. Louis' first run in the fourth.

Ron Reed suffered Pinson, a player who has attained stardom in both the National League and in the American League. After working him to a two and two count, Barrientos got Pinson to swing and miss at a breaking pitch for the inning's second out. Clean up batter Bob Oliver then hit a high fly ball deep to the 400 foot mark in center field where lomas Silverio hauled it in for the inning's final out. Salt Lake threatened briefly in the fourth frame by playing baseball as it was meant to be played. With two outs, Jerry DeVanon laid down a beautiful bunt that rolled dead in perfect position.

He beat it out for a single. DeVanon then began his harassment of both pitcher Rick Clark and catcher Art Kusnyer. Both vainly tried to pick DeVanon off base. Each throw would just miss catching him, and, with each throw, the previously silent crowd became increasingly loud. The excitement grew, and finally peaked as DeVanon stole second base.

Rudy Meoli struck out to end the momentary threat, but the Salt Lake fans had been treated to one of their few exciting moments of the evening. By SCOTT CANT) LAND Herald Sports Writer After trailing for four innings, the California Angels tied the game in the sixth and scored the winning run in the seventh inning to defeat the Salt Lake Angels 4-1 in a Derks Field exhibition game Thursday night. The minor league Angels, despite looking a bit nervous about playing their major league "big brothers" provided some stiff competition for the Angels from Anaheim. Virgil Barrientos, Salt Lake's right handed starting pitcher, shut out the big Angels for the first five innins before being nicked for a single run in inning number six.

Opened Scoring Salt Lake's Angels opened the scoring in the second frame. With two outs, Mike Minster drew a base on balls off Anaheim's starting pitcher Rick Clark. Barrientos vas the next batter. After two terrible and futile swings, Barrientos surprised everyone including Minster, who stumbled going around third, by grounding a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the game's first run. The California Angels threatened to tie the game in the top of the third but Barrientos got the big out when it was needed.

Somebody will walk up to Gaylor Perry and call him Jim the same way someone will come up to Bobby Unser and call him Al. A galleryite will watch Mike Hill knock in a long putt and then think he's making him feel good by telling him "nice going, Dave." And Pat Kelly will gladly settle for 50 cents on the dollar for every time he has had to straighten out a telephone caller and say "No, this isn't LeRoy, this is Pat." "I consider it a compliment," says the brother of Billie Jean Moffitt King, the Wimbledon champ. "I think she's the best player in the world." Better than Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong? "I've never seen either of them play," says the 23-year-old righthander, "but I still say my sister is the best." Randy Mofitt, who came up from Phoenix last month, has worked in 15 games so far for the Giants and is carrying around a fine 2.48 earned run average, wasn't the least bit surprised when his sister beat Evonne Goolagong for the Wimbledon title last week. Randy Moffitt and Billy Jean are close. Very close, even though she's five years older. "We never had a single argument," says the Giants' rookie. "People find that hard to believe, but it's the truth." Like his older sister, Randy Moffitt was crazy about tennis as a kid.
