6 this season of theatrloat buoyancy there has been a rather startling dearth of musical So, of course, the time was right for Bf-oad- way to learn that its old insti- tutlon, the "Ziegfeld Follies," had not passed on with Its founder, Florenz Ziegfeld. After his death, hIa widow, BllUe Burke, promised that the "FM- lles" would car- Biujs BURKS ry on, and Thursday night she deserted Holly- wbod to sponsor the 1984 edition of the extravagant revue, produced this year by the Shuberts. It was just the sort of an occasion to give Broadway a sort of memorial to the master showman. The lobbies were knee- deep In ermine and virtually every one that Broadway respects was there. The talk out front turned naturally to the days back in 1907 when Ziegfeld produced his first "Follies." An old timer in things theatrical reported the cost that year was $18,000.

Another said this hardly would pay for a scene In the modem edition. Twenty years after his first version Ziegfeld spent for his production. To add to the Ziegfeld tradition there was Fannie Brice In the starring role. The same Fannie Brlce had her first big chance with Ziegfeld back In 1910 and she was making fun In five subsequent "Follies." Ziegfeld had discovered her in burlesque. This year she had the aid of Willie Eugene Howard, the two sters, and a rich cast including Patrica Bowman, Everett Marshall and a dozen others.

Just to help the Zlegfeldlan spirit of the week, Peggy Fears, who began as one of Zlegfeld's beauties and rose to prima donna in the Follies, later retiring to become a producer on her own with "Child of Manhattan" and "Music In The Air," returned to the stage as an actress- manager in "A Divine Moment," a new play by Robert Hare Powell. It is her first dramatic role. Miss Fears knows Broadway's likes and has a thorough apprenticeship in the theater. She noticed the scarcity of musical offerings, too, and had set herself to do something about It. Word comes that she Is planning, a second Intimate musical piece.

She goes In for details, such as selecting her own plays, her directors, her scenery and costumes. Among the offerings promised for the coming week is the Theater Guild's presentation of Eugene O'Niell's latest drama, "Days Without, end." From Tulsa, comes word that "The Green Pastures" has passed the 1,400 performance mark, and Richard B. Harrison, who portrays "De Lawd" Is maintaining his record of never having missed a performance. FAMOUS TUNESMITHS ON MAE WEST SONGS Mae West's red-hot tunes for her next picture, "It Ain't No SiA," will come from the piano and typewriter of Harry Revel and Mack Gordon. Revel, music composer, and Gordon, lyricist, were picked following their success in preparing: the list of hits for "Sitting Pretty," including the outstanding tune of the Charles R.
