begun here today be fore a board of the Methodist Episcopal Church South confer ence of Western North Carolina In explaining the executive ses sion of the court Dr Pretty man chairman of the hearing de clared that in closing the doors to the public the court was follow ing a custom and rule of the church in such matters hold that our business Is the business of the church and not the business the world" said the chairman who was chaplain of the United States Senate in the administrations of President Roos evelt and Wilson Dr pending trial of a charge of Immorality has been suspended from his pastorate the fashionable Central church of Asheville He has stoutly assert ed his Innocence of wrong doing STATESVILLE July 20 INS) in the secrecy that goes with barred dors 13Methodist pastors of western North Carolina early today began an in quiry into a charge of immorality against Rev Ashley Chappell sus pended pastor of the fashionable Central Methodist church of Ashe ville The clerical inquiry in the form of an ecclesiastical trial In which the pastor's fellow churchmen sat us a court and a jury began at 9 this morning in the com munity home of the Broad Street church here The trial proceedings which were not open to the church mem hers and the public were expect ed to take up only a few hours This was Indicated by statements ofv counsel just before the minis ters went into session According to Dr II Boyer Methodist minister of Shelby and also a former lawyer who is de fending the Rev Chappell the de fense testimony wilj be presented as quickly as possible by a small "number of witnesses It was un derstood that most of the evidence would be presented in the form of affidavits Rending the outcome of the church trial the defendant was suspended from his pastorate The congregation and stewards of the Ventral Methodist church have staunchly supported their pastor steadfastly maintaining that he is innocent of the charges against him A number of Asheville peo ple were here today to await the outcome of the trial The defendant who is a promi nent figure in southern Methodism and who is distinguished both as an author and a speaker has pro tested bls Innocence of any wrong doing since the charges of immor ality were placed against him In The Incident on which the im morality charge against the pastor was based occurred while he was attending the session of the gen eral conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Mem phis Tenn The Rev Chappell was arrested and charged with dis orderly conduct as a result of a po lice raid Soon after the Memphis affair the pastor issued an explanation He was he said accustomed to taking long walks for his health and as he was strolling about Memphis a city with which he said was very unfamiliar he was suddenly seized by an acute attack of a chronic physical disability He was he declared forced to seek help and he entered the fust house that offered admittance A few minutes later the house he entered was raided by police The charge on which the minis ter is being tried was preferred after a committee of Methodist for constipation at 9 tonight take Klok lax ministers went to Memphis and Girls Come To i Claims Harry Prom ised to Marry Them WINCHESTER Va July (AP) Declarations were made today with in the past year more than half a dozen young girls have appeared at "Kenilworth" palatial estate of Harry Thaw near here with claims that Thaw had promised to meet them at the rendezvous and marry them This announcement presented a curious twist at the latest claimant for marital honors with Thaw Miss orest Hope Walls (correct) pretty 18 year old girl of Hollywood Calif who in an effort to effect a "settle ment" of her alleged breach of prom ise against Thaw today asked $1500 as a balm for her trouble and disappointment Despite the fact that there seemed to be no source from which the sum might be forthcoming it was an nounced that A Connally mana ger of Thaw's estate to which the girl accompanied by her mother and brother went in search of Thaw had offered her $200 not as admission of Thaw's liability but out of sympathy for the embarasslng financial condi tion of the family Tonight however it was reported her efforts had borneno fruit Seen at the tourist camp where she and he mother and brother are whiling away their time Miss Walls said she recently gave up a lucrative position with the Los Angeles Light and Pow er Company to come east and marry Thaw as he had proposed in their mail courtship In spite of his continued absence she declared tonight "she still loves him" Miss Walls never has seen Thaw but said their acquaintance sprung up when she congratulated him In a letter after his court vic tory several years ago In Philadelphia Miss Walls' father se said protest ed against the Journey eastward but she declared her mother encouraged the Wlss father she said protest ment to meet Connally at the office of Harry Kern local counsel for Thaw but Mr Kern said ke knew knothlng about the report or the case Mrs Walls appealed for advice to ather Thomas A Rankin of the Church of The Sacred Heart in whose absence the housekeeper referred her to Maurice Lynch attorney Mrs Walls said she wanted $1500 to "set tie the case" and that Connally yes terday had offered her $200 Mr Lynch advised her to accept enough for carfare and meals en route home
