the Can tonese advance and the Shang tung retreat) Bv ALRED MEYER SHANTUNG March (INS) ighting was In progress at Sunklang with the Shantung armies putting up some resistance when Cantonese troops in Mufti penetrated the Shan tung lines at Mlngsingjao and after a desperate two hour battle during which machine guns and rifles caus ed heavy causaltles forces the Shan tung retreat to start With the Shantung troops in re treat this correspondent headed for Shanghai Out of the trenches of Tenglaitnlao Slao Kun Shan Chang Gen and Sunklang the northern forces came like a great flood Mlng hong and Shanghai were Uw objec tives of the great retreat On all sides the routed Shantung forces were hampered by Guerillas who seemed to pop up everywhere and opened fire on the confused troops Time and time again the retreat ing troops were thrown Into panic and disorder by hails of bullets from Guerillas Every time however the executioners were ordered into action and forced the troops back in to a Va March 21 Arthur Jarrett aged 21 brother of Rev Roy Jarrett of Schoolfield was Instantly killed at store late Saturday night In an automo bile accident in which five other per sons sustained light Injuries Tire full identity of the five persons lit the car with Jarrett is not given but it Is said that three Nelson brother were in the group a youth named Cox and one other whose name has not been learned The part Is said to have attended an entertainment at Crltz and were their way home when the acci dent occurred at the well known sharp curve where the mad sheers away sharply The car apparently was going at a high rate of speed for It ran Into a picket fence along the roadsideand one of tbe small stakes transfixed Jarrett through the breast as though he had been speared The others appear to have been thrown out The accident happened at about 10:30 o'clock Jarrett was taken to Shackelford hospital at Martinsville where he died early Sunday morning from a frightful injury which he could not possibly outlive Jarrett was aged 21 was a son of Jarrett of Pleasant Grove near Spencer and a farmer by occupation He leaves several brothers one of whom is pastor of the Methodist church at Schoolfield and a sister Mrs Ramsey of Martinsville The funeral Is to be held from the Pleasant Grove church nt I o'clock this afternoon and will be by Rev Beckham of errum and Rev McCabe of
