i 60 DAILY SPORTS NEWS Wednesday, July 18, 1990 ir A a COLLEGE riOHS Boo Harvey is going back to Texas, where he began his college career. The St John's senior guard, who was a junior-college All-America at San Jacinto JC, will attend the Spurs' free-agent camp on Friday, hoping to latch on as a backup to Rod Strickland. It's far too early to conjure thoughts of another point-guard controversy for Strickland involving a New York guard. Harvey, who was not selected in the NBA's two-round draft, has to beat out a horde of competitors veteran Darnell Valentine and free agents Rudy Archer (Maryland), Dwayne Bryant By DIANE BRUNO Frank Racaniello recalled how down Leimeister -was when he polished the St John's sports information director's car a few days after his college career had ended. "He said, 'It looks like that's what I'll be doing for a living Racaniello said.

Perhaps Danny O'Sullivan is fortunate that he had a shocking experience prior to attending the Nets' upcoming tryout camp. The 6-11 free-agent center from Fordham learned at the pre-draft Portsmouth Invitational Tournament that playing for dollars is different than playing for a school. "Right after the first game at Portsmouth, people were telling me that I did a lousy job, 'You're ruining your chances, said O'Sullivan, of Bayonne, N.J., who averaged 12.5 points and 7.6 rebounds as a Fordham senior. "And they (agents, scouts) didn't talk to you if you didn't play well." "There's a big change of attitude among the players," O'Sullivan said. "It's more of a business; it wasn't as relaxed as college is.

It's more of a selfish attitude now and I'm not used to that But right now, for me, I've got to think of myself." Syracuse apparently has lost reserve center Richard Manning, who had been penciled in as a starter this season. The 6-11 junior asked for and received a release from the school and won't accompany the Orangemen on their tour of Europe next month. The University of Washington has asked for permission to talk to Manning, who is from Sacramento, but has relatives in Tacoma. He also has expressed an interest in Colorado and Cal-Berkeley. Manning's departure could mean more playing time for sophomore Conrad McRae, the former Brooklyn Tech star.

At the spectrum's other end, Syracuse is elated that highly touted incoming freshman guard Adrian Autry, of Tolentine High, recently passed his board (Georgetown), Kurk Lee (Towson State) and Ken Atkinson (Richmond), who played at St Anthony's High in Smithtown for one open spot "I'll tell ya, Harvey's got a good shot at it," Spurs player personnel director Bob Bass said. "I think his talent may come to the forefront I think he can create a shot for some other people and he has the ability to push the ball up court, which is very important for us. Also, it's important the point guard can create his shot, which he's proven he can do." Other non-drafted Big East seniors attending NBA camps include Georgetown guard Mark Tillmon (Nets) and forward Sam Jefferson (Bullets); Seton Hall forward Michael Cooper (Pacers); Syracuse guard Stevie Thompson (Nuggets) and Villanova center Tom Greis (Bullets). Villanova forward Rodney Taylor is playing professionally in Luxembourg. Seton Hall forward Frantz Volcy elected to earn his degree in physics next month before pursuing a pro career.

Eric Leimeister wondered if his baseball career had crashed to a halt after the St John's senior right-handed reliever surrendered 11 runs in innings in his last two college appearances, which raised his ERA from under 1.00 to 3.90. Leimeister, who holds the Redmen record for saves in a season (7) and career (17), didn't believe he'd be drafted. He was, though, taken by the Detroit Tigers in the June draft's 40th round. And he's been a sensation to date, earning a promotion to a higher classification of Class A ball in only three games. Leimeister, who attended Great Neck South High, was moved up to Fayetteville of the South Atlantic League after recording three saves, giving up no runs while striking out 13 in six innings for Niagara Falls of the New York-Penn League.

exams on his final try. Daily News Sports Writer Suffice it to say, Richie Ashmeade the News All-Star guard from Holy Cross has had better summers. First, his plans to get in shape to start his collegiate career go down the drain when he nearly breaks his ankle in a fund-raiser. Then he decides to forgo his freshman year at UConn and go the prep-school route. Ashmeade, who averaged 21.5 ppg for the Knights, will attend St Thomas More rather than sit out a year at UConn as a Prop 48 casualty.

"I was really disappointed," Ashmeade said yesterday from his Queens Village home, recuperating from a severe right ankle sprain suffered in the Mandela Games at LIU on June 15. "I had one more chance to take the SAT (June 2) but it was the same day as my graduation and my parents really wanted to see me graduate." Ashmeade and his parents started looking into other options once they realized that as a Prop 48, he'd lose a year of eligibility at UConn and not even be allowed to practice with the team. "It's been tough; it kind of spoiled my summer," said Ashmeade, who still has his eyes on UConn for the '91-92 season. "But I think I'm handling it well."
