This may explain to some extent the distant reception of television stations," Mr. Register states. through 6. D. Register, service manager of the television. department at the Jim Grady gives the following explanation which will be of interest to many local people who have been experiencing interference. with their television reception lately.

Mr. Register states, "Some of these out of town stations are interfering with our local reception: We have seen on KFEQ-TV. 'St. Joseph, KPRC-TV, Houston, Texas, and WMT-TV. on channel: three KNTV.

Omaha, Neb. and WLBT-1 Jackson, Mississippi and channel. four- WOAI-TV; San Antonio, also a station on chanhel six, which was not recognized. "Two stations from Mexico City, Mexico (channels two and four) have been picked up. These I stations are not causing the terference, but their presence: is proof that the interference on KPHO, channel five is very possibly caused by distant stations also on channel five.

At this time last year channel five in Seattle, Wash. blanked out Phoenix completely for a short time. This phenomena horizontal is usually preceded by; lines running through the picture, and a squeal sound "This freak reception can't on anyone but nature, Regretfully we say that there isn't anything that tan be done. about it. Therefore we'd like to try and explain why its happens.

"In all branches of wireless electronics communication the ionosphere is a very important factor. The ionosphere is the outI er layer of the atmosphere overlying the stratosphere. Ionosphere derives its name from the existence of a large number of electrified ions, presumably produced chiefly by the ultra violet radiafrom the sun, and constitutthe ionized layers of atmospere: The ionosphere consists of at least three ionized layers differentiated from each other by a change in the ionic concentration and electron density. "The normal way for a television signal to act when transmitted from the station is to travel in a straight horizontal Due to the curvature of the earth, signal will: gradually leave the outer space. If not -intercepted by a television receiver, it will finally.

penetrate the ionosphere and be lost. 'At certain times of the year, usually due to a seasonal change, the ionosphere becomes: very.i dense and the concentration of charged particles in the ionosphere is increased sharply; At this time television signals, which usually penetrate the ionosphere; are sometimes partially reflected, like light on a mirror, back to the 'earth. The density of the ionosphere governs the angle of the reflection. If the angle is wide, it may be a great distance from transmitting station where the signal returns to the earth and is picked up by a television reflected signal may be i received ten times as strong as we receive KPHO- Phoenix.
