Dorney Park unveils thrilling new rides Q. 00 00 0 z By Beverly Schock The Republican ALLKNTOWN' - (Her $5 million in new rides and attractions await visitors at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, in this their 104th year of operation here, The Flight Deck, a brand new area of the park, is the setting for four breath-taking rides Top ('tin, The Dragon Coaster, Balloon Race and The Joker. Top Gun, the first ride of this kind in the country, is an action-packed, computerized airborne attraction. Seated in a moving airplane-like -structure, the rider engages in a video-game dog fight to see who will be "Top Gun" for that particular segment of the ride. The plane which holds the player with the highest score becomes the highest car on the ride, or Top G un. "Sometimes the kids don't even know they are on an amusement ride," Harris L Weiristein, chairman of the park corporation said, "they are so intent on playing the videogame." A scaled down version of a roller coaster, called the Dragon Coaster is next on the list. Aptly sculpted in the form of a fire breathing "dragon," this mini-coaster is not for the faint of heart. Although it is not as high as the larger version of coaster, the rapid spiral motion of the cars have been known to elicit a scream or two from riders. The Balloon Race, a colorful attraction, lifts its bright balloons and baskets up and out to 25 feet simulating a real hot-air balloon race. Yet another ride, The Joker, which is soon to be installed, has a theatrical appearance in its seating arrangement. It will involve a sudden 65-foot circular drop which leaves guests breathless. Built in Italy by the Zamperla Company, delay in trans-Atlantic shipping has held up the installation of The Joker for the opening of the 1988 season. Tank-tag, located in the same area, is an attraction which requires separate admission. Ten tanks, each with fully enclosed seating for two (a driver and a gunner), let the players play rac-quetball tag with each other and players located behind netting on the sidelines, Live Entertainment Friday & Saturday Nights DODGE CITY CAFE Front SL, Cressoni The Personal Touch unique Country & Collectible Store Coilectib! Sat 10-5 The purpose of Tank-Tag is to outmaneuver racquetballs fired by the other tanks and the sideline players. If a tank is hit on a designated red stop, it is totally immobilized for several seconds. "W.e "didn't-want to call it Tank Battle, because it is all in fun," Weinslein said, "but the guy inside could be hearing , telephones and doorbells ring for a week when there isn't anyone there, if he gets too many direct hits on his tank." In the ToLspot area of the park, new attractions include Convoy, a mini-version of 18 wheelers which seats four children to every brightly colored miniture "rig," a clown ride, mini-jets and a merry-go-round. At Wildwater Kingdom, the Runaway River, the largest inner-tube ride in the country, now features even more Whitewater and increased speed for 1988. Sunbathing decks, restaurants and a football field-sized wave-pool are also part of the fare. In the near future, Torpedo Tubes, a tubular water slide featuring two 350-foot curving slides and one 150-foot speed slide which splash down into a refreshingly cool pool will make its debut. Lollipop lagoon is an area where parents can not go without being accompanied by a child The Lagoon features water guns, slides, swings and more. Three Spaghetti slides, an adult attraction, (to keep them busy while the kids are at Lollipop Lagoon) start 60 feet in the air and then twist, turn and interwine until the rider splashes down to a watery finish. Thrills Unlimited, a recent addition, is a separate admission attraction adjacent to Dorney Park.
