"Our crayon market has always been as stable as any market can be," said Jim Wilson, manager of the Winfield plant. But parents were looking for other products for their children. "We knew mothers would love this," Wilson said of the felt-tip markers printed with "erasable" in large letters. "They were telling us they wanted it to keep markers off the furniture and walls." Also, the company is selling products in new places, from hotels to airlines, and planning products for teens and the growing adult crafts market since steered Hallmark into markets ranging from real estate to Spanish-language television, but he still thinks his first buy was a good one.

But Binney Smith is making more than Crayola crayons at its plant in this small Kansas town south of Wichita. The 85-year-old company has branched into art products designed to appeal to everyone from toddlers to professionals, as part of a larger diversification plan by parent company Hallmark Cards Inc. The Kansas City-based cardmaker bought Binney Smith for $200 million five years ago, shortly after Irvine O. Hockaday Jr. became Hallmark's president and chief executive officer.
