I-, Jamie Lawson NORTH COUNTY STAFF Lindon is facing a shortage of volunteer coaches for youth soccer. The city was short by 27 coaches last year and the city says applicants need never have played soccer to apply.

"Last year we had 35 soccer teams, but only eight people volunteered to coach," said Kim Walker, director of recreation, not- ing he had to call parents to recruit the remaining 27 coaches. Kim Lee was one of those 27. "It wasn't a convenient time for me," she said. "I was really hesitant to do it, but it was a good experience." Lee said she was reluctant to coach because she was not familiar with soccer a reason that Lee said is the most common reason parents decline to coach. "Soccer wasn't as popular 20 years ago as it is now," he said.

"Many of the parents don't know the sport and are afraid of coaching." But experience is not necessary, he said, A coach's main responsibilities are to organize practices, provide supervision and emphasize the fun of the game. All coaches are provided with materials explaining the rules, he said. ROBB COSTELLODaily Herald new sports tower in Lehi on Feb 27. he has coached every sport the city offers, shares his sentiment. "It gives me a chance to see that my kids get good coaching, and it's bonding time with my kids," he said.

"It's also a service to the community. I would encourage parents to try it." Hiatt, who works as a coach at Canyon View Junior High in Orem, said he believes sports are vital for children and provides benefits that go well beyond physical fitness, "Sports build self-esteem, keep kids busy and gives them a sense of purpose," he said. "They also learn to work as a team." The primary objective of Lindon's soccer program is to help children develop technical skills and give them plenty of opportunities to have contact with the ball, which is why there are no more than four players on the field at any given time and there are no goalies, said Lee. Another objective is to teach good sportsmanship something the city encourages parents to said Maurina Jolley, a recreation program assistant. "Parents can be demanding when it comes to getting their child on the same team as their friend," she said.

"Sometimes people will pull their kids out of the program if they don't get on the team they want instead of encouraging their child to make new friends." And while every effort is made to honor special re quests, Jolley says it becomes next to impossible to accommodate Soccer registration is going on now until March 24. The season begins April 29.. And the city sought and obtained federal and state grants. The Utah Division of. Parks and Recreation gave two grants, one for $175,000 and one for $150,000. The new park has a baseball field, two softball fields, two Gates Continued from Dl and the Hideshimas for 25. The business lost customers for hiring Japanese staff.

"A lot of people wouldn't come here if we had Japanese help," Gen evieve said. She said she feels lucky to be able to work at her age. Her family considers her an inspiration to other women her age who may just sit at home. But she claims she's just doing it because the doctor told her to get more active. "I never wanted to get this old," says Genevieve, "but now I'm glad I'm this old." "I just learned as I went, and it ended up being really fun." Walker said the other big reason people don't want to coach is because they say they don't have the time.
