to morrow, She leaves on a circuit trip around Hawaii on Monday next. 37" Copious showers fell on Thursday morning. reaching on the lee side of Oahn from Diamond Head to Waialua, and on tbe windward side of the Island also. Figs were very abundant here twenty years ago. Of late years till the present they have not often been offered for sale.

We are gladto see them again, as rich and delicious as formerly. ttf- Mrs. Lucy Tbnrston met with a severe fa.11 a fetv days since, which it was feared might prove a permanent injury. Wc are glad to learn that she is recovering from its effects. Our last page will be found Interesting this week.

Among other articles, a description of Lady Conn's bank, a statement showing one hundrrd and thirty steamers plying between America and England, tc, tc SroKns. The U. S. ship Portsmouth was spoken by the schooner Fanny, three or four days before her arrival in port. She wonld visit Eawaibae the last week in July to obtain fresh vegetables and stock, and arrive here about the time the mail steamer from San Francisco Is FoLtTiCiL Mectiso.

The natives residing at Wallnku, Maul, held apnblic mass meeting on Moo day of last wetk to discuss the proposed reciprocity treaty In connection with Pearl River. The major ity the speakers favored the ni ensure, bnt no resolutions were passed, and the meeting adjourned till this week. ZtT The schooner Fanny left on Thursday last for the "avlcator Group. The American Minister took par-sage In her, purposing to slop a day or two at Cant. Makce's and then proceed on to Kawailiae, Hawaii.

From which point tbe schooner will pro ceed direct to tbe above group. She will probably be back here to meet the October mail steamer. Real Estate Sale. Wc understand that C. C.

Harris, last week sold bis residence in Xuuanu Talley to Capt. Thomas H. Hobron, of Makawao, cash, the premises not deliverable till the end of one year from the date of sale. This would make Its cost about tS.OOO. The dwelling Is large and commodious and the grounds around it com prise several acres of land.

Tnn Cult Process. Tbe San Jose Jimmy, no ticing tbe premium of $1,000 offered by the Hawai ian Government for the Introduction of the inven tion Into these Islands, wonders "If it Is cur Cnlp process." We pan answer that it is nothing else than tbe Gllroy process, patented by Mr. Culp. A hundred acres ol tobacco can be grown here at short notice, whenever wauled to give It a fair trial. Ac tual experiment is the only way to lest its value here.

Theatrical. The performance at the Royal Ha waiian Theatre on Saturday night last, passed off extremely well. Maggie Knight was of course good, as she always Is. Mr. Clemens was received with great applause, und gave perfect satisfaction, and the two Hawailans of tbe Band Knmakaia and Kalua were well worth hearing.

Mr. Berber must have felt proud of them as bis pupils. It Is to be bojicd that tbe Theatre will be as well filled next Saturday night. A gentleman informs us that while on a visit to Wuikifci, last Saturday, be observed a huge shark swimming leisurely near the shore, where people bathe. tc were uot aware that sharks ever came inside tbe reef Oa being alarmed and chased by the natives, he showed himself at a loss which way to go, beading out toward the reef till be came to shoal water, then returning inland and darting along tbe shore first In one direction and then in another.

Before tbe natives could launch and man their canoes, the ugly visitor disappeared through some opening In the reef into the deep sea. New Scgau Plantation. The steamer, on her last trip lo windward, landed at Molukal eeventy bcad of bnllock, belonging to Mr. J. McColgan, who proposes to start a sugar plantation on land which he has lately leased from the administrators of the late King's estate.

The tract, which Is located be tween Kaunakokai and Kaluaaba, comprises about four thousand acres, stretching from the sea to tbe mountains, and Is known as Kamaloo. Of this about one hundred and fitly acres arc low land, and believed to be adapted lo cane growing. The cane will be cultivated by a farmer who has already gone to work. The mill is the same as that used on Mr. McColgau'e Ewa plantation, and will be set up In time to take off tbe crop, wbich will be ground on shares.

This system divides the risk and the profit between the planter and manufacturer. Camcatubes. On Saturday last a somewhat elaborate representation, intended as a caricature, appeared on the window at the office of the AVioii, relating to Pearl river and Its cession. There was no point to it, and It passed for a very silly attempt to provoke laughter. On Sunday another appeared on Merchant street, representing tbe editor of the Xuhou as the "IsbmacIIte Shepherd of Lanai," wltb his crook, and followed by bis Suck, bleating ont "annexation," "annexation." Still a third appear ed on Monday an Fort street, one picture in It repre- ceullug a jocky mounted on a lion bound for the Lr-glslatlvc hall, and calling for tbeirood old limes," when rum -fas three dollars a gallon, tbe bottles being marked probably "good rum." Another represented a fox, marked "JVuAou," look ing up most wishfully at a bunch or grapes banging from tbe window of tbe Foreign Office.

This last appears to have been the one which caused the most laughter among the crowd of spectators, and evidently hit tbe nail on the head. East Maci Female Semisabt. On July 101b tho friends of tbe school assembled at Makawao in large numbers to witness tbe examinaticn of the pupils. The school contains fifty-six pupils, most of whom have learned all tbey knew of tbe English language In this Institution. Some have been in It only a lew months, aud none more than two years, yet the va ried and extensive knowledge shown by their ready and accurate replies, would imply that tbey bad been many years under training.

The enunciation of English sounds, by tho pupils, was remarkably clear and distinct. Their exercise in reading, and especially In spelling English words, impressed us. Their proficiency in geography, arithmetic and bible history, was very gratlfylog. Wc were charmed, too, with the recitations and wltb tbe music. Oh what Industry and toil must bare been employed to accomplish such results.

No wonder tho teach er seem worn out with their labors. We arc highly favored In having sucb a teacher as MIsa Carpenter. Iu an adjoining room were spread on a table many articles of dress for children and fancy work, made by Ihe pupils, showing their skill In the use of tbe needle While climbing tbe hill of science, tbey are also taught all.tbe mysteries of tbe household arts, cutting out garments and making them, washing and ironing, and cooking, and keeping their rooms and everything about them according to tbe doctrine that Order is heaven'e first law." Wc were more than gratified tbe school Is worth more then all it has cost us; and the public must not allow it to lag for want of support. There Is an anomaly, however, which ought, cot to continue. Mr.

Andrews and family bare as yet received nothing for their ser vice. Tbe means at the disposal of tbe trustees I bare been so limited that tbey had nothing to offer them. May -we not-hops that some among us, when prospered, will think of this school; and that the next Legislature will devise liberal things. Mo. Editou.

I observe that my friend Mr. 0. Rhodes, in the last AdrcrtUcr, arraigned Mr. Castle, Mr. H.

A. P. Carter, and yourself before the public for having criticised his address on Hawaiian poll- tics. He forgot to notice me, for, in a communica tlon addressed to tbe same paper, July 5th, lasted for Information relating to an individual living at Hanalel, In 1S43, who, on learning that Lord George Paulet bad seized tbe entire group, Is reported to bare tossed bis bat Into the air, gave three hearty cheers lor Queen Victoria, and exrlaimed, "Thank God, tbesc Islands are under British rule." Mr. Editor, I feel myself sorely slighted by the hon orable gentleman, for not answering my questions, and passing me by without notice.

It may bare been unintentional. If so, I pardon the omission, and trust next time be writes for tbe papers, he will relieve my suspense. Yours, lor "the good old times," Kama-MXA. The Courts. Supreme Court Silling In Banco.

Union. A Japa-cese Fibe. In May last, a fire broke out in tbe Mikado's palace.

In ten minutes the wbolo structure was in flames, and in less than an hnnr it was burned to tbe ground. The native troops and firemen were promptly on hand and preserved order. Tbey could do little else, as the buildings burned too fast to be saved, and the moits stopped the progress of the fire. Tbe Emperor, accompanied by bit own body-guard of lancers, went to bis mother's palace near by, and there tbe Empress and the Conrt joined him the neat day. The palace and outbuildings were totally destroyed.

It is said that a new one will be built from the plans of a foreign architect, to cost about $.,500,00. These fires como in very conveniently for the purpose of restoration. Where tbe great fire swept clean a year ago, the streets have been straightened and widened, and rows of two-story brick buildings are being erected. These are built after f-rtign models, and, for two miles, the principal street of Vcddo looks like that of any large city in America or Europe. It only needs a horse-railroad track in tbe centre, and that will be there ve-y shortly.

Some evil-disposed persons are giving publicity to the rumor that the palace was set on fire by incendiaries, for political reasons. Such a story Is totally untrue. The fire was caused by one of the Empress' ladies, who, as the nigbt was chilly, had taken a braiier of charcoal into ber bed. During tbe nigbt this fair young damsel, this high-born maid of honor, selected for her beauty, and her rank to serve the Emperor's bride, kicked, upset the brazier, scattered the lighted charcoal over the cotton quilts, and a new palace will lie the result. A slice of turnip too much possibly "a fish bono in tho throat will cost $2,500,000.
