We had a pleasant call yesterday from Mr. A. T. Smith, of Lowell, Mass. This gentleman is one of the Raymond excursion party.

He has been to tho Volcano, and pronounces it a wonderful sight. Mr. Smith is an asphalt contractor employing a large number of workmen, and his work is seen on every street in the city of Lowell, and also in different parts of the State. A Chinaman named Chun Wa was found guilty "this morning, of having opium in possession. He was lined 650 and sentenced to one mouth's imprisonment at hard labor. Mr. Ilartwcll, who appeared for him, noted an appeal to the Supreme Court. Underneath one of the rooms occupied by this man thirty-six tins of opium wore fouud, evidently there for trading purposes.

Last Wednesday, while a native was riding along near the Princeville Sugar Mill, he came across the body of a Chinaman. It was badly decomposed, the head and arms were severed from the body, and it looked as if it had been partly eaten by some animals. The body was afterwards recognized as that of the Chinaman who won the $2,000. Fuller particulars may be expected to-morrow by the Planter. In the Police Court this morning, a man under the name of Vacinte Madiars was fined for drunkenness.

R. Gerke, for assault and battery on Adolph Kruck, had his case next tried. It occupied the attention of the Court for over two hours, a large number of witnesses being examined. His Honor postponed the hearing of the final arguments until Monday. Ivon Kroner, a German, and Ah Chin, a Chinaman, were both committed to the Tnsano Asylum.

Last night was ladies' night at the skating rink, aud a large number embraced the opportunity for exercise and amusement. Tho com pany of ladies and their attendants was so largo that, while the floor was pretty well filled with skatdrs, there was scarcely a seat unoccupied br spectatois. A detachment of the Royal Hawaiian Band furnished appropriate music, which heightened the pleasure of both skaters and spectators. The management of this pleasure resort deserves a word of commendation. Nothing could bo more orderly and respectable, or more in harmony with the strictest propriety.
