The commission designated the Beaux Arts Apartments at 307 and 310 E. 44th the Syms Operating Theater at Roosevelt Hospital.

440 W. 59th St; and the Metro Theater, at 100th SL and Broadway as landmarks. The elegant interior of the Scribner Bookstore at 48th St and Fifth Ave. was also designated. The exterior of the building was already landmarked.

And the commission added three blocks bounded by Pearl, and Dover Sts. and Peck Slip to the South Street Seaport Historic District The exterior of the Scribner Bookstore had long been a city landmark; but the interior was not considered until this year when the commission found out the building had been bought by Benetton, an Italian sportswear firm. Preservationists feared the elegant interior would be changed to accommodate the sale of sweaters and skirts. However, yesterday interior designation means that the commission would have to approve any changes of the store's interior. Earlier in the year, the sportswear firm said it bought the building for investment and had no plans to alter it The Scribner bookstore building was owned by the Scribner family from 1913 to 1984.

The store architect, Ernest Flagg. was the brother-in-law of Charles Scribner. When the Syms Operating Theater at Roosevelt Hospital opened in 1892, it was the most advanced surgical facility in the country. The design was dictated by the needs for sanitary conditions as well as space for medical students to watch surgical proce-dures. The Beaux Arts Apartment buildings, designed by Raymond Hood, were completed in 1930.

The apartments were specifically designed for architects and artists for what was planned to be a midtown artists" community.
