2B THE GETTYSBURG TIMES, FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1990 Scoreboard AP Laserphoto BEWARE OF SWORDFISH A diver and a fencer from a local club try out their underwater fencing skills recently in a pool in Poitiers, central France. Fastbreaks Shackelford hops to Italy From staff and wire reports EWARK, N.J. Troubled third-year forward Charles Shackleford, who averaged 8.2 points per game last season, was placed on waivers Thursday by the New Jersey Nets and will play basketball in Italy for more than $1 million a year, the Nets and his agent announced. "He approached the club and said he had a deal in Europe that he wanted to pursue," said Nets spokesman John Mertz. "The team decided to let him do that." The 6-foot-10 Shackleford had troubles both on and off the court during the 1989-1990 season.

Controversy clouded him throughout the latter part of the season when news reports linked him to allegations he shaved points while playing at North Carolina State. Shackleford denied the allegations. He was also hampered during the season with an infection in his right elbow, which affected his play. His agent, Sal DiFazio, said Shackleford would play for S.C. Juventus of Caserta, Italy, in the Italian league.

Shackleford's salary would be "seven figures," DiFazio said, but declined to be more specific. 'They made him a very good offer," DiFazio said. "With that, in combination with the present roster that the Nets have, he didn't think he'd get adequate playing time this year." Mountaineeer mascot breaks tradition ORGANTOWN, W.Va. Another tradition will crumble Saturday when West Virginia's football team makes its debut. The Mountaineer mascot will be a woman.

Natalie Tennant, a 22-year-old broadcast journalism major, beat a male challenger last spring during a "cheer- off at a basketball game. It was the first time in the 54-year history of the mascot that a woman won the job. Since then, a bra was put on a Mountaineer statue near the student union. Buttons and bumper stickers saving "We don't want a Mountaindear. Give us back our Mountaineer" have been spotted around town.

Tennant expects to hear a few boos Saturday. Her sense of humor will help. After she won the cheer-off, there were boos from the student section and chants of "Go back to the kitchen!" "They didn't know that I can't cook," Tennant said. Organizational meeting Sept. 5 ETTYSBURG An organizational meeting of the Babe Ruth Intermediate League (16-18 years old) will take place at the J.F.

ESPN Jimmy Houston Outdoors add Baines and McGee to to already potent lineup TIM LIOTTA Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. It doesn't em fair. The Oakland Athletics already Jose Canseco, Rickey Hender- that pitching staff, and a -game lead in the American West. And now they have to and add Harold Baines AND illie McGee. BASEBALL BRIEFS "What these two moves suggest ijs that we feel very strongly and are Reused on the rest of the 1990 sea- in," said Sandy Alderson, Oak- gind's vice president in charge of Baseball operations.

It's getting to look like an All Star reunion in the Oakland locker- om. The A's can field a lineup con- ilsting of eight former All Stars -lark McGwire at first, Willie Ranolph at second, Carney Lansford third, Henderson, Canseco and in the outfield, Terry Stein- ch catching with Harold Baines the designated hitter. The group has a total of 33 All selections between them. aJt Weiss, only the 1988 AL Rookie of the Year, would play shortstop. 5 A prsjHrlCH X.3X -i V-t IS 5 5 i Soar snsao Willie McGee The two trades enable the A's, who have been nagged by injuries for the past two months, to ensure themselves the depth they feel they will need the final month of the season.

"What do we have, a six-game lead? Maybe if we don't make these deals we could have hung in there and won this thing," Oakland manager Tony La Russa said. "But we had a chance to make these deals. You want no regrets. Personnel- wise, now we have no regrets. 'The worst thing I can imagine is spending this winter thinking that if we had made a deal or two deals we would have won it.

You play five months to get into this position. If you see a way to get better in the end you take it." Rickey Henderson, Canseco, Lansford and Steinbach have already spent time on the disabled list this season. Henderson is still nagged by hamstrings and Canseco's back is not 100 percent. "Who's to say that from now to the end somebody's not going to have a recurring problem," La Russa said. "Now we've got two more quality guys.

It brings our depth back to where we were. We've got some guys in our lineup today who could use a couple of days off." McGee and Baines, both 31 and both four-time All Stars, also add some left-handed bats to the A's lineup, giving Oakland a balance that has been lacking so far this season. Pirates acquire Carmelo Martinez PHILADELPHIA The Pittsburgh Pirates have obtained the right-handed power hitter they've sought for months, acquiring Carmelo Martinez from Philadelphia just one day before the post-season roster deadline. To acquire the outfielder-first baseman from the Phillies, the division-leading Pirates gave up outfielder prospects Wes Chamberlain and Tony Peguero and a player to be named later. Chamberlain was the Eastern League's player of the year at Harrisburg last season and is hitting .250 with six homers and 52 RBIs at Buffalo.

Pirates General Manager Larry Doughty says his own foul-up forced him to deal Chamberlain, who was considered the Pirates' top prospect last spring. Doughty said he misinterpreted the roster rules this week when he mistakenly placed Chamberlain on waivers. Another team claimed Chamberlain, forcing the Pirates to trade him or lose him. Martinez, who formerly played for San Diego, is hitting .242 with eight homers and 31 runs batted in. WALKER TO 303 E.
