In addition to achieving a Masters Degree in Social Work, she was a voracious reader, a gourmet cook, an amateur historian, a political pundit, a decipherer of mystery books, a home champion of Jeopardy, a solver of countless crossword puzzles and throughout, a model of grace, good manners, a and proper grammar to her children and grandchildren. Her compassion and generous spirit were reflections of her strong faith which guided her daily life. At Victoria General Hospital on August 19, 2004, in his 86th year, after a brief battle with cancer. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Elizabeth McCausland; son Tom in Vancouver, daughters Martha (Joe) and Meredith in Sidney; brother Robert in Sequim, WA; sister Hazel in Missouri; grandson Dave in Ottawa; and many relatives and friends scattered across the country. Born on a homestead in the boondocks of Manitobas Interlake region on March 24, 1918, Alex later served with the RCAF during WWII as an Observer (Navigator), flying to destinations throughout the world in Ferry Command, and in India with 435 Squadron. Alex met his future wife Mary at a dance for servicemen in Quebec City in 1941, gradually wearing the Nova Scotia gal down with his prairie charm to marry her in March of 1942.

Following the War, Alex attended the University of New Brunswick, obtaining a degree in Forestry. His career in the natural resources field, working for Provincial, Territorial and Federal governments as well as the petroleum industry, took him to every province and territory of Canada. At his request, there will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the charity of your choice. She was predeceased by her son Gilbert Gertrude also had 22 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren. In 1998 she had a debilitating stroke, which paralyzed her left side.
