THE OTTAWA CITIZEN 4 Taylor Leemans of the Capital United tries to retain her balance and possession of the ball during an under-10 division game yesterday. Memories, but no medal, for California girls team Feel the touch of class 'It all worked out in the end' for the Southern California Storm, writes Darren Desaulniers. 'Girls are pumped for next season' Sounders 4, Fury 0 BY DARREN DESAULNIERS A brilliant year came to a bitter end for the Ottawa Fury in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Fury's first trip to the playoffs ended with a 4-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders in the bronze-medal game of the W-League Championship Weekend. On Friday, the Fury had lost 3-0 to the Chicago Cobras in a semifinal game. "The girls are already pumped for next season, which is encouraging," Fury coach Frank Lofranco said by telephone. "The experience of this weekend will bode well for us next year." The Fury played an excellent second half yesterday, but by then it was too late. The Sounders had put the game away with three goals in the first 11 minutes.

Tina Frimpong scored in the second and sixth minutes, and she assisted on Brenda Meuller's goal. Aisha Alfa scored the lone Fury goal in the 65th minute, but that was answered by Alicia Milyak in the 82nd minute. "It was a tough weekend," Lofranco said. "A couple of weeks from now, though, we'll have a better perspective of what we've accomplished this year. "The girls really came together and played some wonderful soccer over the summer.

This was my most enjoyable year as a coach." Overall, the Fury was 11-4-1. The host Hampton Roads Piranhas capped a perfect 14-0 season with a overtime win against the Cobras in yesterday's league final. Mercy Akide scored the golden goal. meeting a lot of different people. "The French was difficult because it was hard to read the road signs, and people didn't always understand what we were saying, but it all worked in the end." The age cutoff for youth soccer divisions is different in the United States, so, while the Storm plays as an under-15 squad at home, it was more of an under-14 entry in the Gloucester tournament, putting it at something of a disadvantage.

That wasn't the only difference the players noticed. "The refs are more strict here," Alison Warner said. "At home, there is a little more pushing that is let go, but here they tend to call it a little more." In all, 160 teams took part in the tournament, mostly from the Ottawa and Montreal regions. There were several teams from other parts of Ontario, mainly in the higher age categories, plus some from upstate New York. Three Gloucester teams won their age-group titles.

The U-10 Tier 1 squad beat the Cumberland Cobras 2-1, while the U-14 Tier 1 Hornets won 2-0 against the Lakeshore Lakers from Montreal, and the Senior Tier 1 women won 2-0 over the Kemptville Kougars. Three other Ottawa-area teams claimed titles, too. The Nepean Storm defeated the Ancaster Titans 1-0 in U-12 Tier 1 play, while the Nepean Hotspurs Tornados knocked off North Bay 1-0 in the U-16 Tier 1 final. The Kanata Lightning was a 3-2 winner over the Oshawa Kicks in U-1718 Tier 2. For a group of young California girls, the national capital was the last stop in a 10-day tour that will have them dreaming of Canada when they get home.

The Southern California Storm made the 11th Gloucester Hornets Invitational Girls Soccer Tournament the last stop on a trip that also took them to Montreal and Quebec City. Their final game was a 0-0 tie against the Panhellenic Strikers of Sudbury at Potvin Fields yesterday. Unfortunately, that left the Storm just short of qualifying for the Under-15 Tier 2 division semifinals. The Californians won their first two games 3-1 and 5-0, but lost their third 2-1. A tie in that game, or a win in their last game would have put the Storm in the semifinals, but instead they headed home with memories rather than medals.

They started their trip with a tournament in Montreal last weekend, then spent last week playing exhibition games and touring Quebec City. They arrived in on Thursday and managed to squeeze some Whitewater rafting in between their games on a tight tournament schedule. The team was to head back to California "We had a lot of fun," Tracy Thomas said.
