Edith also served her country during WWII, with the RCAF in Canada and Overseas.

She is a graduate of the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing. She was a recipient of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977. Died very peacefully on December 19, 2000 at the age of 75. Born in St. Mary, Jamaica, a retired R.N., Isis will be remembered as a consummate and dedicated community worker. A founding member of the Jamaican Ottawa Community association and President for three terms and Vice President and Eastern Representative of the National Council and supportive Organizations. She served on several boards and committees such as the Kings Daughters, the Carleton Board of Education, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, Immigrant Services, Police Race Relations, multicultural Liaison Officer, and Multicultural Health Coalition.

She also served as Master in the Rosicrucion Order. Isis was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, among them the "Order of Distinction" from the government of Jamaica, for outstanding contributions to Jamaican communities in England and Canada. Isis will be greatly mourned and fondly remembered by: her sister Vera Miller (Jamaica), brothers Benjamin (England), Augustus and adopted son Donnie (U.S.), niece Grace and grand niece Kelsey of Ottawa, many nieces and nephews in Jamaica, the U.S., England, Germany; and friends, fellow volunteers, who offered love, care and support in a special "Caring Special thanks to the Palliative Care Team of Drs. Gick, Farncombe and nurse Julie, to her specialcare nurse Mary Ann, her homemakers, and the many friends who visited, phoned, sent cards and flowers. Beloved wife and best friend of Harvey, loving mother of David and Morgan, mother-in-law and friend of Sheila and Nora. Proud grandmother of Leigh and Eric. Predeceased by her parents Arthur and Carrie Maxwell and sister Anne.

She also leaves a niece and two nephews. -171357 Known professionally as Joan Maxwell, she possessed a magnificent mezzo voice and enjoyed a distinguished performing career across Canada. She appeared with major Canadian orchestras and opera companies but was perhaps best known for hundreds of radio, television and concert recitals. She appeared at Expo 67, is heard en several recordings and performed numerous works commissioned especially for her. She performed at the inaugural concerts at the opening of the Centennial Concert halls in Winnipeg and Brandon, Manitoba.

Among many other conductors, she appeared with Richard Bonynge, Seiji Ozawa, Walter Susskind, Mario Bernardi and Otto Werner -Mueller. A spinal injury virtually ended her performing career and she went on to become an outstanding singing teacher in Ottawa, both as Professor of Voice at the University and in her own highly successful studio. She was founder and Artistic Director of the Studio Opera Guild giving outstanding local singers the opportunity to sing major roles from the repertoire. As a wife, mother, artist, teacher and friend, she will be remembered as a gentle, caring and loving person who always gave unselfishly of herself. As a patient she was respected and warmly regarded for her fortitude and positive outlook.
