When you were released from suffering As you joined the angels hovering, You apologized for having to leave But we both knew there was no reprieve, We embraced, and you lifted my hand To place a kiss on my wedding band. Our tears and sadness were hard to bear, For fifty years we had been a pair. It was one month short of fifty-one When you breathed your last your life was done. As I pen these words my memory Recalls our life, and what used to be, We'd laugh at the goofy things you'd do, I can't equate how much I miss you.

Not too long from now there'll come the day You'll take my hand to show me the way To perfect peace in that place above, And we'll be a pair again, my Love. Veter MAISONNEUVE, Karyne On June 12th 2006, Karyne entered the hospital for one last treatment to ensure her cancer would stay in remission.

She was healthy and energetic, looking forward to a new beginning. After a difficult and painful three weeks, only a few days before coming home, she contracted acute hepatitis, an extremely rare complication of the treatment. The doctors were never able to determine the exact cause of the hepatitis. On July 1 2th 2006, after an excruciating week of watching her health deteriorate, Karyne passed away peacefully in her mother's arms. She was 8 years old.

Karyne's incredible courage, loving trust, eternal smile and witty sense of humor always prevailed. She taught us to live each day to the fullest, and to laugh in the face of adversity. Her story touched hundreds of people in our community of Ottawa and elsewhere around the world. She inspired people to show compassion to others, to become better friends, or to renew their faith in God. She is now our angel.

Since being diagnosed with cancer in December 2004, Karyne participated in several fundraisers and events for CHEO and was heard on the radio and seen in the newspapers on many occasions.
