other day a London dUTy Ze printed an item which said that in the course of a dedication service at tli VV 1 parish church of Shodfleld on the fringe of the fruit growing district of South Hampshire the Protestant bishop of Southampton declared that they might pray for the spiritual progress I of their dear departed ones as the lews and early Christians were accustomed to do The intercessions he said I of those in Paradise had helped on their I I friends The London Monitor and New Era commenting on this said We arc glad to see our Protestant friends I coming round to the view supported like by common sense scripture hurch authority and natural feeling However the bishop or his friends may I Ihedge about the matter his words clnarly mean that Protestants may and do believe in Purgatory Therecan be 310 spiritual progress in heaven for I there the bjesscd have attained to the I utmost bliss nor can there be spiritual progress in hell for out of hell there is no redemptipn If spiritual progress is to be made it must therefore be made in or from some third place and the Catholic name for that third place is Purgatory A Scientist on Prayer jAn eminent scientist Dr Theodore I Hyslop speaking recently at a I meeting of the British Medical association thus recommended prayer as I the best of all cures for nienJV disease I As an alienist and one whose whole life has been concerned with the I sufferings of the mind I would state that of all hygienic measures to counteract disturbed sleep depressed I spirits and all the miserable sequpls of a distressed mind woulc undoubtedly ly give the first place to the simple habit of prayer Upon which the Outlook in its I criticisms observes as follows Mr Hyslop competence to speak In 1 the name of science is unquestionable 1 and what he affirms as a discovery of medical science is identical with the II immemorial faith of religion that there is a place for prayer in the very nature of things Xot only does he find this place to be foremost among re ftorattve agents of the religious enthusiasm II which the nature of prayer is i 10 feed and sustain he affirms that it I embodies the most healthy and pre aervative development of our social I forces Among the many notable utterances in which science is now evincing herself to be the handmaid of religion I those the most recent are as memorable as any DI Hyslops discovery of medical Science is good Catholic doctrine as qld as the Catholic Church Ask and you shall receive seek aG you shall find fl 3 Help That Parish School i Editor Intcrmountafil Catolic I I Sir The apoJofir for this appeal is i a threatpnod parish and Gods innocent children Our small church has been heavily in debt for many years Bu things grow worse since a lack of em I ploymcnt has set in here Many are forced to leave seeking work else rthere As a very sad result of our poverty the sisteis have been taken away and our little children arc threatened with the loss of a religious education The poor people struggling and selfsacrificing for years are hurt bitterly at Uiia threat and to avert jt are compelled to seek assistance from yioso more fortunate In your Godhent charity will you not Ind Oct 26 190 a SELFTORTURE IN INDIA Religion Which Foolish Women in America Adore Heathenism is still heathenism At least it is so in India writes the Rev Rockey in Leslios Weekly It I needs something stronger than culture 1 and the devicrs of civilization to change it Every object of civilization from the railway and the electric light and the best motor car down to the lucifer match sold at three boxes for a cent is to bo teen in common use in India and yet the old customs not strictly forbidden by law have not loosenedtheir hold Christianity and education have effected clianses in some portions of the empire but have just touched this mass of heathen and Mussulman plaguestricken humanity Our pictures show selftorture practiced in two separate forms at Luck now in a local religious fair Two miles from the city is an insignificant shrine little larger than a coalbin and no more attractive In it is a red clay idol Here one day over 100000 pilgrims I resorted tp male offerings of money and sweets It is tlfe custom for those who have I a vow or who wish to get some great boon to go the entire way from their I homes however distant bv measuring their length every inch of the way At I home Uiev choose pebble or something of that kind Lying fiat with I their feet touching their doorsills they place the stone at arms length and I arising walk to it pick it up place the foot here the stone was and measuring their length place it one reach farther on Thus they go the whole way The night before the day of offering between 6 and 7 hi I rode three miles on one of the rQads and counted TJJ3 such devotees Some were boys most weie young men Some had come a short distance the average of the lot must have been four miles I photographed one group going over the bridge They had been on the way four hours and had just bathed in the I river so they Vvcre fresh Next day at 10 a I photographed a man almost dead in the road where the dust was 130 degrees Fahrenheit He was going slowly and hah yet a hal fmlle Crowds Jostled by him stumbled over him but he Ue on He had come twelve miles I saw no women There were said to be several At the same fair was a fakir swing ing head downwards through a hot fire His head swept through the high blaze and almost touched the glowing coals tic said he was 80 rears old He was I toothless and might be TO but he was yet as nimble as a cat He talked with me and said he did it for merit with I the gods He declared that he used all the money he got in purchasing fuel He certainly ate very little and that mostly lentils Another picture shows a man with a brick piled on his stomach Trii face except his nostrils covered with dust I lying in the sun whose rays at the I time were not milder than 120 degrees Fahrenheit All this for merit All condoned by high Brahman priests I And yet this is the aesthetic religion which foolish women in America run after I Women Excluded From Choirs Bishop Richter of Grand Rapids Mich has positively ordered that women shall hereafter be excluded from all choirs in his diocese Before his recent departure for Rome he issued the following letter to his clergy Cathedral I Grand Rapids Mich Oct4 1905 Reverend Dear Father In his encyclical on church music our Holy Father Pius decreed the exclusion of female voices from the choir during liturgical functions As ample tlnie has snow begH given to prepare men and boytj to sing i at all such services we strictly forbid from henceforth all singing in the choir by female I voices in the churches of this i i diocese If men or boys have not yet I seen trained to sing at High Mass the congregation must be content with i Low Masses until due provision for proper singing made I I remain dear father your sincerely In Xto HENRY JOSEPH 1 Bishop of Grand Rapids Old Catholics Dying Out The Rev Peter Yorke editor of the San Francisco Leader writing from Wiesbaden Germany says that the sect known as he Old Catholics have a very pretty church capable of seating two or three hpndred in that city but I I that their day is past They call themselves Old Catholics as a protest against tliQ4Vatican council and the decree of infallibility The opposition to that decree among certain German professors was very strong In the early seventies it was at one time feared that the would carry Catholic Germany into schism en masse The Prussian government gave them every support and the persecution under Bismarck known as the Kulturkampf was designed to help their cause But they are gradually disappearing says I Father Yorke In Wiesbaden the average congregation is only about twenty and these old people They are evidently I the remains of the original se ceders Their priest snys mass after the Roman manner but in German The vestments are the sain the altar is decorated as with us but the Stations of the Cross nrenot used and I did not notice any holy water fonts In spite of the great nourish of trumpets with which the schism opened it is now i I dead Catholic Germany that measured swords with Lutheris not going Ito I succumb to a irchaelogists playing at religion Bishop Coriaty Spain The Tidings Los Angeles I am in this wonderful city of Muril lo Seville who masterpieces are found scattered everywhere It is worth a tript SnaUi to see the masters workS all itsglory in the city of his love The grtat vathctlral is one of the worlds wonders at least to my mind not only hecau of Its historical beauty andtits marvellous architecture but also because of its paintings and its treasury of church ornaments Seville also has its Alcazar the homt of the Moorish kings hnd one df those onderfurpalaces which show the high expression Moorish ttrtundcr the inspiration mid ejicouragemeiit of Christian kings It jUiq mighty cathedral with its wonderful Moorish tower which is the pride of Seville lie the remains of the illustrious Columbus in a i tomb whi hsn rmrvel of grandeur i and beauty surmounted by four heroic I bronze statues of tho Vii of CtiJP Leon Navarre and Catalonia on whoso shoulders is borne a satafalque Like good Catholics and Americans on Oct 24 we paid our respects tothe memory of the great discoverer by visiting his tovr ami nt tile lti nf V1 ornb said mass for our people not forgetting i Spain which made his work possible Spain has been a perfect revelation tOme and I shall treasure as long as I live the kindness and extreme courtesies of its prelates and its clergy I had a most delightful visit with his eminence Cardinal Espinola whore minded me very much of our own beloved Cardinal Gibbons both in his appearance and in his simple suave manners makingus perfectly at home with him as he assured me that while hero I might consider myself as enjoying all the privilege of the archbishop of Seville He graciously called on me yesterday and 1 winsay my adios to him today I Spain is not properly understood and is much misrepresented in the guidebooks It Is thor ushI3 Catholic ami one must aflinirc lha evidences of devotion foundoneverj hand Itisrich i Ii in Catholic traditions and affords splendid opportunities for any student who wishes touch the springs of early and mediaeVal as well as modern history One lives amid the glories of the Catholic kings and realizes how much the world owes tp Spain in the civilization which we enjoy I There is much to interest the Californian for in many ways Spain has given to California much of that which it glories As to climate and general physical conditions there is great similarity SEE OF NEW ORLEANS Archbishop Riordan to Make Known Wishes of the Pope Catholic Universe From all indications we judge that New Orleans will soon nave a successor to the late Archbishop Chapelle Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco has arrived in Rome on his regular visit ad limina and has been received in private audience by the Pope and has had several conferences with Cardinal Gotti prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda It is understood there that the consultations included discussion of the appointment soon to be made of an Archbishop for New Orleans and that Msgr Riordan is to carry the Popes advice on the subject to the meeting of American Archbishops soon to occur in Washington Several weeks ago the most available man for the place vvas believed to be Msgr Broderick formerly Auxiliary Bishop of Havana But he has since been given special charge of the placing of the Italian immigrants throughout the United States and it is doubtful if he will be relieved of that work unless the Agricultural Society organized by him for the purpose is found effective enough to carry it on ithout his personal supervision Another prelate now mentioned for the New Orleans appointment Msjr BJenk Bilhop of Porto Rico who is favorably considered for the jJfhle be CilXise of his knowledge of Louisiana and his long service as a parish priest in Xew Orleans He has many friends in the Propaganda Plus is anxious tQl fill the vacancy at New Orleans as soon as possible but will walt for the action of the American Archbishops who will decide upon three names to sent to Rome in nomination between now and Christmas The custom adopted by the Vatican authorities permitting the hierarchy ih England and America to have a voice in the selection of bishops fort ose countries and making no appointment before three names are received in nomination from those countries has proved highly successful It is likely to be adopted for other countries in the near future In fact there is already consideration given i to the possibility of appointing the new French bishops by this method It is seriously proposed that after the abolition of the Corcordat vhfcn the appointment of French bishops will be made by the HOly I See without consultation with government authorities the system now used in England and the United States shall be extended to France It is said also that the Pope has planned to call a national council of all members of the French hierarchy to discuss the new conditions made for the Church in France by the laws of separation and that the part that may be taken by the present bishops in naming their colleagues I will then be discussed Many disciplinary measures will also be considered at Uiecdunclil chlch will provide new rules to meet the changed i I conditions in the French Church 1 Bishop Grace When Bishop Grace of Sacramento was presented to the Holy Father last week Pius received one of the most devoted and zealous Drelates in the Jnited States rA singularly retiring man there is1 not in our hierarchy one whose name is more rarely seen mpublic pjlnt Yet his intimate friends know him it to be a man of high ability and remarkable scholarship He is i a sound theologian and a polished writer and might easily I have won distinction as a pulpit orator But Dr Grace has been content asa missionary bishop in a difficult diocese I and has never sought the glamor cf public applause outside of his own See He hs surrounded himself witfi I a splendid body of auostolic priests like himself who undistinguished and almost unknqwn beyond thd bounds of their parishes spend themselves through weary years for the upbuilding of the Church of God It is generally understood that one I object of the bishops visit to the Eternal I City is the division of his large I diocese A mountain territory of almost 100000 square miles ib i too much for any bishop to cover 1110r specially I where much traveling must be done by stage and not a little by seaJ Probably a miew diocese will be fornied embracing I the greater art of the state of Nevada In that event Reno will be I the seat of the new episcopal See and the diocese of Sacramento will be confined to northern California This will be a most desirable arrangement from every point of view The Leader Priests for the Canal Zone I At the request of the congregation of propaganda Pius has signed a decree permitting priests of the United States with the consent of their bishops to leave their dioceses and take up work in the Panama canal zone where Englishspeaking priests are scarce Monslgnore Junguito bishop of Panama has been in correspondence with the propaganda and has complained of the difficulties of his work owing to the scarcity of priests who could I minister to rapidly increasing English speaking population of the isthmus The congregation has now authorized I the bishop to recruit priests from the United Slates and has provided that such priests as take up work near the canal may return to their former dioceses should ill health make them unfit to continue work on the Isthmus I I A Handsar Missionary I For five years Father Basitiust of the Capuchin Order of Monks of the Church I of St Joseph has journeyed once a month from Appleton Wis to Norrie Marathon county to preach Cot small congregation It has been found necessary for the priest to travel by handcar most of the time alon During the cold days of last winter when the thermometer registered far below zero the priest made his trips regularly The distance covered by haiidcar is sixty miles Ecumenical i Council IAn Of much importance to the whole church is the news given by the i Abbe Odelin to a representative of the Gau lois on his return to Trance from Rome wherf he has been as a member of the I Workingmens Pilgrimage The abbe who had a special audieifco with the Pose states that as soon as the separation bill has been passed the French senatli the blshoys wIJlTiold a general meeting and with the approval of the Holy See will adopt resolutions to meet the new situation Hjs Holiness the alt added intends to convoke an ecumenical council so oon as circumstances will permit It will sit at Rome and will be a continuation of the Vatican council which was interrupted in 1870 There Iti I certainly an ample progra mme ot work for council to undertake There are the social ajid educational questions and numerous administrative matters which might well receive attention The reunion of the churches a subject to which Leo XHI devoted ciVinuci thought the bear pg jnqderri disV coVerles on Biblical criticism antrthc I rosition created for the religious orders will also it flJe assumed receive consideration from the council I RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE The golden jubilee of the Grey Nun of Toledo was celebrated with inipreif sive ceremomes recently in St Francfe de Sales church under the auspices pf St YincentVorphan asylum I The Ancient Order of Hibernians Scranton PaV is hiding a movement to substitute street cars for carriages at funerals because of the exorbitant I charges that liverymen arc now making The movement reported to have the indorsement of Bishop Hoban and the local trojley company has agreed to fit up a car for fuhcral purposes In recognition of tho fact that Memphis and the state of Tennessee has almost miraculously escaped from the yellow fever scourge the Right Rev I Thomas Byrne bishop of the diocese of Tennessee has issued a pastoral letter directing prayers of thanksgiving after all masses for the space of two mcnths VV A cablegram from Rome states that the kaiser has informed the Vatican that he intends during the spring to make a cruise of the Mediterranean and to stop at Civita Vecuhia and pay a visit to tin pope incognito If assured that the Vatican wishes it he will pay a formal visitsimilar to that which he paid to Leo XII I Archbishop lean of Dubuque la has removed the ban placed upon the Catholic Benevolent society of Dubuque
