0 With great diffidence we would beg to be permitted to suggest that, for the amount of direct and personal interest the Express staff have in babies, they keep up a wonderful amount of clucking on the subject. That paper has started in on another baby carriage crusade, just as though somebody thereabouts expected to have a sort of Texas Pacific competitive reverslopary interest in the disposition of that vehicle. The attempt to spoliate the bachelors of Los Angeles into furnishing that baby carriage for the Fair is meeting with grand success. There was a string of Benedicts as long as the line at the Postoffice on delayed mail day pouring into the Express office yesterday with contributions. Amongst the valuable coins donated were, several brass farthings of James's day -the very brass money introduced into Ireland with the famous wooden shoes- great collection of Confederate currency of various denominations and 1000 shares of stock in the Bloodsucker mine, of the par Value $100,000 and of the actual value of $0001.

The bachelore' fund is accumulating at a rate which bids fair to result in a perfeet bonanza. In fact, we can say of the efforts of our contemporary that "the good work goes bravely on." The collection committee of the Horticultural Pavilion were around soliciting contributions yesterday. They met with very gratifying cess. They will go around again to-day, and our citizens will doubtless be ready to meet them cordially. Three thousand dollars are needed to put the Horticultural butlding into a condition which admit of bolding the vext Fair in This Fair will be largely attended from abroad and cannot fail to benefit our business men, while the Horticultural Pavilion will be a lasting ornament to our city.

As an instance of the extent to which persons from abroad will come here we may mention that the committee bave an application for hotel accommodations for from two to four hundred visitors from San Bernardino, who propose to remain here three days during Fair Week. The editors of the two San Bernardino papers bave mutually agreed to suspend their daily editions and publish weeklies hereafter. The Argue gives following sensible reasons for the change: "We have been of the opinion from fret 'it that a daily paper, conducted as should be, was extravagant luxury for a town of size, and, indeed, could not be made to pay sufficiently well to Warrant the perplexing and unremitting labors necessary to make it a complete success. With a weekly paper we shall expect to devote such care, energy and attention to it as shall make it a true exponent of the interests of this cality." Gas is a matter of absorbing interest of late. An exchange says that the city of Poughkeepsie, New York, has been lighted, for three years past, with the purest, softest, and most brilliant gas in the 0 0 000 world, at a yearly saving of $50,000 to the consumers.

This gas is duced under the Harris and Allen-Harris patents, the process using the old-time retorts, and so being adapted to the ing coal gas works--the cupola baving been discarded eight years ago as unsafe and defective in gas making. We learn that the people of this city and State will soon be offered the benefit of these improvements. Mr. Henry King, of this city, yesterday received the sad intelligence of the death of his mother, Mrs. James King, which occurred at her home in Kilmegan parish, County Down, Ireland, on the 17th of August last.

Silver Our attention has been called, by a gentleman who read our report of Gen.

Stoneman's remarks on petroleum as fuel, to the fact that in the Lowe process of making gas crude petroleum is made to largely take the place of coal. This would afford market for large quantities of our oil product. We find, in a late number of the San Jose Mercury, the following Interesting facts in regard to the Lowe process of gas making and of the gas itself: For many months prior to the introduction of the new gas in this city, a persistent effort was made by the manufactures of coal gas to forestall public opinion as to its alleged inferiority. We were told all sorte of damaging stories about it; but the new works, wuder the energetic direction of Col. Boyer, went forward nevertheless.

And when at last the connections were made, and the new gas turned in, there WaS one general expression of agreeable surprise. The light was found to be at once far superior to the coal gas in every way, and has Improved with use, until we now have a gas that nothing except daylight can surpass. similar experience in the city of Baltimore is thus given by the Engineering and Mining Journal of Juue 1st: The complete success this sygtem iu a city of 350,000 population, marks an era not only in its owu progress, but in the history of gas lighting as well. This will be the better appreciated if what has accomplisbed be stated briefly. A few months ago Baltimore war lighted by a monopoly, and very poorly lighted at that, for the statute required only 12-candle power, and the companies naturally under such circumstances are not apt to break the law by excess.

The price charged for this low quality Was $3 per thousand. Consumers were charged a round price and protit upon connection pipes and compelled to pay a deposit on meters which was greater than their cost, aud which furnished a large casb capital for the company's operations. The new organization Consumers' came forward, promising to build works, lay maine, put in services and metters free of cost to the citizens and furuish a superior gas at $2. The people promised to support it. In January, last the new works began operations and have siuce regularly distributed a 22-candle gas.

The old Interest, has raised its standard to The Dew company already, supplies about 5,000 buildings receives a handsome daily average of new subscriptions. Immediately on its starting the old company reduced its price to $1 50 per thousand, hoping thereby to hold ite customers and compel its rival to make further concessions. In both objects, however, it failed, for the new pany held to its original charge with the result already mentioned, and in spite of the temptation to gave the extra 50 cents for these bard times, the people are steadily increasing their patronage. The result to the city of Baltimore is, that it is now one of the best lighted cities in the United States, getting from 50 per cent. 75 per cent.

more light for 30 per cent. to 50 per cent. less morey. The actual cash saved to sumers amounts to $2,500 per day, without reckoning the economy growing out of the improved quality. The old company states that, although deprived of so many consumers, it is still selling as much gas as formerly, which, if true, is a gratifying evideuce of the fact often insisted on by us, that a reduction of price would largely stime ulate cousumption.

We understanu that the new company, is entirely satisfied with ability of the Lowe process to compete in every particular of quality and cost with the old method of distillation in retorts. The eight generatore which were guaranteed to produce 500,000 cubic feet daily, without forcing, yield 6,000 each per hour, over a million feet for the 24 houre, The cost in bolder is below the sum prom ised, as the quality is considerably above, being uniformly maintained at 22 candles. The cost of distribution is much less than in the care of coal-gas, becaus there is little 11 any loss in transit by condensation. The drips show an insignificant accumulation, while photometrio tests four miles distant from the works betray DO appreciable change of illuminating power. An eminent expert who has recently made analyses there reports that the most delicate methods failed "to detect the faintest trace of carbonic acid, sulphur or am monia," and pronounces it to be the purest gas that has ever come under his observation.

On this aggregation of facts we think the Lowe process has fully demonstrated the entire success of the water-gas principle, and is entitled to take permanent rank among the beneficent arts of civilization. There are other system: which utilize the bydrogen of steam and make good light, but they do not appear to show a genuine competitive energy, and therefore we specify the Lowe process. This began its operations some five years ago, with a distinctly avowed purpose of improving the quality and cheapening the price of gaslight, and this pledge it has handsomely kept. It bas had to grapple with iguorance, conservatism, prejudice, political influence, and strong vested Interesta; but, despite them all, it bas goue straight on, and is to-day in successful operation in a score of towns and cities, in every instance raising the candie- power permanently reducing the price of gas. Some of the shrewder of the old companies are concluding that it is only a question of time with the antiquated retort system, and are adopting the new one.

If they will take one more and seemingly easy step, and send out a cheap fuel gas, such as Dr, Moore's recent report upon the Strong process proves they can do, they will deserve and surely receive an enthusiastic and profitable patronage. Gas Made from Petroleum. The Cincinnati Saturday Night has bad a visit from a man who has only just learned of the A8888- sination of Julius Caesar. It hadn't been in any of the papers, and he wanted to know the name of the "galoot that done it." Silver. Hame Industrial Aid Association.

Pursuant to call the members and friends of the Home Industrial 1 Aid Association met in the County Court room last evening. Judge Peel was called to the Chair, W. H. J. Brooks acting as Secretary.

The Chairman opened the meeting with some remarks upon the meritorious objects of the Associatiou and the necessity of speedy tion. Last night, about 8 o'clock, Charles Trapp, a well known ber of Confidence Eugine Company No. 2, died suddenly at the county Jail, where he had been placed for safe keeping on account of what was supposed to have been a violent attack of delirium tremene. He wag visited about 4 o'clock by County Physician Hannon and Dr. Kurtz, the latter of whom had treated him in a previous illness, and a sub-cutaneous dose of morphine was administered by Dr. Kurtz to quiet his nerves.

About 8 o'clock Dr. Kurtz returned to the Jail to see how his patient was getting along and found him dying. He was removed the corridor and, in a few minutes, breathed his last. The remains were taken to the rooms of Messrs. Neitzke where, about 10 o'clock, a post mortem examination was held by Dre.

Hannon and Kurtz, which disclosed the fact that deceased had been suffering from conges. tion of the brain and that his death was caused by the burating of oue of the blood vessels ol the brain. An inquest will be held this morning. Deeeased will be burried from Confidence Engine house at o'clock this afternoon. COURT REPORTS.
