The part where the king crawls under a bridge to plant dynamite is possibly the oddest action sequence of the season. We know this isn't all true, of course, because no one sings Shall We Dance? They do, however, dance, at a party that Anna has arranged for the English community. She teaches wine stewards how to carry bottles while falling prostrate as the king enters, and teaches Siamese officials how to eat with knife and fork, and then shows up in a gown that stops the party.

It's a montage that calls out for Oscar and Ham-merstein, if not Walt Disney, but director Andy Tenant (Ever After) can't linger over what might be a magical scene, despite his fairy tale bona fines. Anna and the King is less concerned with the dramatics than with the goings-on between the mismatched stars. Seeing as how the goings-on are not going on, this seems rather cavalier. In real life, Anna Leonowens inspired a king to modernize his country, probably without her last-minute military help. Anna and the King shows lovely vistas and great outfits; the rest is a Hollywood fantasy of what could have been if only a couple of sharp screenwriters had been sent to Siam at the time to get things into proper order.
