Movie Tough Guy's Sister Knows He Only Putting on a Good Ad By BETTY JANE FERGUSON NEA Service Staff Correspondent New York. Cagney, very attractive sister of James Caguey, the hard-boiled hero of the screen, doesnt mind the tough, rowdy parts he plays because she watches him from a professional standpoint.

"I realize ttiat his screen manners and tough way of speaking are not -part of Jimmy, but of the actor," said Miss Cagney. Miss Oagney, who is 19, has just been elected Phi Beta Kappa at Hunter College, and will be graduated on June 15th. Born and raised in New York, she went to Hunter College High School. She majored in French and German and speaks both fluently. Aside from the plays she has appeared In at college, attending the theatre, and watching brother Jimmy emote, dramatics have played only a small part in her life.

Asked if she expected to go on the stage or enter the movies, Miss Cagney smiled, "I have never thought much about It, and when I've been with Jimmy we have never mentioned the possibility of my appearing on the screen." She is very proud of all her brothers. Jimmy is the best known, but another brother, Bill, Is a trlcal agent on the West Coast. Twi other brothers. Harry and Edward practice medicine here. Prefers Individuality In Jlcn Miss Cagney hasn't any definite ideas about the type of men she prefers, but she did say, "I think it is much more Important to an indvidual, and interesting, than it is to set out to be a certain type That applies to both men and wo men," she continued.

"If all girl were soft and feminine, life wouldn't be very interesting." She says that she is not engaged but she is not very talkative on the subject of men or romance did admit that her brothers never escorted her to dances. But she Is so attractive that the fralerna: neglect never made much difference Miss Cagney loves the theatre and goes whenever she has a chance She has no favorite actor or actress because she says, "I am Interested In watching them all work." have no particular she continued. "In the summer I swim and piay tennis, but not too well." Miss Cagney doesnt feel that It Is a handicap being the sister of a famous man, but she does admit that people react differently when they find out. One of the first things they do is ask questions galore, "Our whole family looks a ercat deal alike, but the resemblance isn't £0 amazing that people on the subway stop and stare." Jeanne Cagney DARK SURFACES If a surface to be painted dark the finished coat may be made more even and of better appearance by adding a little lamp black to the priming coat. The exceptional picture can expect a small taste of something like immortality. Currently on the screens of the nation are 20-odd pictures that did well enough on first release to warrant a second life. Some others, however, are going forth In an effort to make up for what they failed to do on first showings. Product shortage, result of Hollywood's recent production calm is not entirely responsible for the revivals, although a contributing factor.

The main reason is the confidence that the fans will welcome back their movie friends. "It Happened One Night," 1934's prize-winning picture, Is probably the most popular revival. Nev prints have been issued, one is playing a first-run Broadway house, and In at least a dozen theaters of the Southern California area "It Happened One Night" Is drawing patrons. To date this Is Columbia's most profitable film The same studio Is re-issuing "A Man's the strength of Spencer Tracy's victory in the academy awards, plus Loretta Young's growing popularity. Some New Old Ones "One Way Passage" was successfully revived by Warner but fhls studio has no current re-Issues oh the screens, unless in isolated spots.

United Artists Is profiting on new showings of "The Counle of Monte they even re- previewed will revive "I Cover the Waterfront." Metro's new "old ones" include "David Copperileld," "Treasure Island" and "Viva Villa," with "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Captains Cour- igeous" in prospect. Paramount ias "Lives of a Bengal Lancer," "A farewell to Anns" and "Buggies of led Gap," and Universal has put forth "Frankenstein," "Love Be- ore Breakfast," "DracMla," and 'Lady Tubbs." Twentieth Century- Fox's only re-Issues are the perennially popular Will -Rogers films, two a year. BKO has frequent exhibitor calls for "King Kong," "Little Women" and "The Informer," but the re-Issues are not yet on a national basis. Katharine Hepburn's early film, "Spitfire," is being shown in some spots with Bob Bums featured. He a minor role in the picture.

The Case of 'Bcn-Hur 1 Frequently a picture has to be revived to come "out of the red." Most notable recent example was "The Informer," a money-loser until the academy award and subsequent, revivals put it in the black. Paramount may revive "Make Way For Tomorrow," which lost money but, TOS building in popularity when withdrawn. Perhaps the most notable instance of a long uphill struggle at the box-office was "Ben-Hur." Tremendously popular when released in 1926, the film had to clear Its original cost of nearly $4,000,000. Through continuous showings here and abroad, through a re-release In 1931, "Ben-Hur" not only left the red but is now on the o'redit side of the Metro ledger. "Hell's Angels" had a similar experience, cleared out more quickly.

I.oneeft lived feature, iiowcver, is still "The Birth of a Nation." Made in 1914, it has played contin- in the world- over since. Synchronized for sound and music, it was re-released in 1030 with some success. Most exhibitors seem to welcome revivals especially if they can choose between a one-time hit and a new feature of uncertain and many make re-showings a regular practice. With a revival, at least, they know what they're sell- Ing and how the public has "bought" it before. That role in "Comet Over Broadway," turned down by Bette Davis, Miriam Hopkins-and Irene Dunne, has been rewritten somewhat for Kny Francis, who is taking it smiling, Jo Prances James, granddaugh- of the famous Jesse, will appear In the'projected movie version (starring Tyrone Power) of ihe American legend's life Script will be based largely on new evidence uncovered by Rosalind Shaffer, local newswoman, for a biographical volume.

Shaffer worked with Jo Prances and the late "Uncle Billy" Judson, onetime member of the James in digging out the the 20th Century outfit bought the factual stuff before the book was completed. As a result Jesse James may be presented In an entirely new light. A Short Item Usually the sets where "shorts" are being made afford little In the way of copy. But on ''Campus Cinderella" we found Sally Sage, Bette Davis's blonde stand-in, acting in front of the camera and served by a stand-in herself. Stand-in to the stand-in actress was Rla Neissen, who's served Bonlla Granvllle similarly.

When Bette goes to work, Sally will stand-In some more, but she's on her way to the spotlight herself. And on the same set was Director Noel Smith, ex-husband of Louise Fazenda who is now the wife of Hal Wallis, studio production mogul. And one of Smith's assistants was Don Page, once mown on screen as Don Alvarado, And Don's ex-wife Ann is now the wife of Jack L. Warner, who shares the studio production job with Hal Wallis! Stunt Rule No. 1 Harvey Parry, the ace stunt man, tells about his first day in pictures, which taught him a lesson he's never forgotten.

Parry came down from college to be an engineer, got a Job instead on "The Queen of Shcba," the Betty Blylhe sensation of 1919. The director wonted a stunt man who would swing by a rope from one side of a hall to land upright on a set of stairs, so steep and narrow that one stunter after another turned down the job. "All right," said the director, "if you're all yellow I'll do it myself. Get me a costume!" says Harvey, "he did It. They had to pick up the pieces and the man is still on crutches.

It's a stunt man's cardinal principle never to undertake anything he knows he can't do and I learned the lesson that first day." A I NOVEL PARTY DECORATION There really no such thing as a Fourth of July party without an American Flag. And if-you want, something quite unusual in the way of decoration, it can be worked out quite easily and inexpensively with small red, white and blue balloons. Simply cut a large flag from cardboard, mark out the design and pierce holes nt intervals along the markings. Inflate the balloons, taking care that they all reach the same size, Insert the nubs through the holes in the cardboard flag and tie on the wrong side. STOCKING BEACH SHOES A very "different" beach shoe, fashioned somewhat like a short sock, Is woven of strong yarn in many-colored stripes and has a flat, flexible sole ot cork and rubber.

It hugs the foot dosely, yet Is utterly comfortable and is not Injured by water. COTTONS GO MEXICAN Fashions adapted to American use from foreign native costumes are amazingly popular. Cool, comfortable and beautfully tubable Is a white cotton Mexican peon dress, its full short skirt bordered with bold design in vivid desert colors and its short-sleeved draw-string blouse brightly embroidered. Wear a huge straw shawivol hat tied under the chin and genuine Mexican huarcbes woven of fine white leather, to complete this costume fittingly.
