Watertown Republican Kelerednt the Postofflce at Watertown, as matter. WJI L. NORRIS, Editor Proprietor. TSBMS: 82.00 per Annum in Advance. 'Watertown, Fek.

10, 1892. Hon. James G. Blaine writes a letter which was given to the public JtJomday, making the announcement t'bat he is not a candidate for the Presidency. By this action the of Harrison seems more than before, although other are mentioned.

Should it to haveacontest iiVthe convention, Wisconsin rvrrald doubtless be found supporting Rusk for the nomination usndfir the belief that he would make formidable candidate before the people. But it may be safely that in the naming of apresi.dential ticket the Republican Naftfcnal convention will choose wisely m-iid bring forward for president and candidates who will command thefullconfidence and support of the party. Clarkson, Chairman of the Republican National Committee. My Dear Sir: am not a candidate for Presidency and my name will not -go before the Republican National convention for the nomination. I 'make this announcement in due season. To those who have tendered 'me their support I owe sincere thanks and am most grateful for their confidence. They will, I am sure, make effort in the approachingcon- which rendered specially important by reason of the industrial financial policies of the government being at stake.

The popular decision on these issues is of great Siroment and will be of far-reaching consequence. Very sincerely yours, James G. The slate for the New York delegates-at-large to the Chicago convention, says a New York letter to The Washington Post, is Lieutenant- Governor Sheenan, Edward Murphy, Richard Croker aud George Raines, of Rochester. This is a Hill slate as the men are classified at present.

Mr. Raines is the only orator of the number, and he will probably be selected to present name to the convention. He is a big man with a blonde mustache and a strong pair of lungs. His style is slightly emotional, and he has made a study of the value and effect of words and phrases. If it falls to his lot to nominate Mr.

Hill at Chicago, Mr. Raines wall acquit himself creditably. He can be counted on to give some new and original expressions in describing the qualifications of his candidate. From the inner circles of Tammany Hall comes a well authenticated report that the leaders of that organization are not a unit for David B. Hill.

The who control Tammany Croker, Gilroy, Grant, Crockran said to be divided on the subject. A gentleman who is in a position to know the facts said: coming sensation in Democratic politics is the split in Tammany on the Presidential question. Croker and Gilroy have decided that it is inexpedient to nominate Hill or any other New York man. They are in favor of taking a Western candidate. Mayor Grant and Congressman Cockran are dead set on Hill and they will not listen to suggestion of any other man.

An open rupture will be the result, unless either side backs down, which is not at all likely. of course, will ask why Croker is against Hill. I believe that there is an old sore somewhere in the past which rankles in bosom. Croker is a silent, undemonstrative man, but ht never forgets anything. But, in a sense, Croker is the very best type of a practical politician.

His motto is success. He would sacrifice his own brother or the best friend he had on earth if he thought it would strenghten his organization. He is absolutely without sentiment. Every distict leader of Tammany Hall knows that to retain his place he must make A GOOD SHOWING IN HIS DISTRICT. The moment he fails to get out the vote in his district that the organization is entitled to he ceases to be a leader in Tammany Hall.

This is inexorable rule. After an election he sends for the leaders of the districts where vote has fallen off. To each one he says, do not seem to be able to satisfy the people of your district. I think you had better step aside and let someone try it who Many of personal friends have been treated in that manner. The fact that Croker shows no favoritism is the secret of his power.

They all respect and fear him, and believe that he is working for the best interests of the organization. believe that Mr. decision to favor a Western man for President the result of his cold-blooded judgment of "the situation. Tammany is now in complete possession of the city and the state. No unfavorable legislation to Tammany can be passed at Albany.

Never in the history of the organization was Tammany so completely the master as it is to-day. a Western Democrat in the White House control of this state would not be disturbed. But if Hill were President there might be more or less friction. Another thing, Mr. Croker realizes that Hill would be regarded as the nominee of Tammany Hall bythegeneral public, and that would be a handicap to him.

Then if Hill should lose, the blame would be placed upon Tammany and that would injure the prestige of the organization at home. Tammany is on top, but Croker knows that he must fight and play politics to stay there. By the time the Democratic National Convention meets, I believe Tammany will be secretly, if not openly opposing nomination. Mr. Gilroy agrees with Mr.

diagnosis of the situation. He believes it is better politics for Tammany to favor some man outside the state for President than to support Hill or any other New Yorker, The organization has got all it can carry, they say. Mr. Gilroy, next to Mr. Croker, is the strongest man in Tammany Hall.

He is slated for the mayoralty nomination next fall and will in all probability succeed Grant on Jan, 1. 1893. Grant and Cockran are not far behind Croker and Gilroy in the matter of influence, and if they adhere to their present determination and make a fight for Hill there will be music in the air before long. In every organization there is always a dissatisfied element, and Tammany is not free from it by any means. Then Grant and Cockran will have a strong name to conjure by.

They can appeal to the local pride of the organization and promise places galore. I doubt very much if Croker and Gilroy with their superior executive ability could swing the organization against Hill and over to a Western man. It will be a very pretty fight, however, the biggest one that has ever taken place within the Tammany The worst feature of la grippe is its after effect.
