Church Kev. Dr. Joshua Peterkin, father of Bishop (Jeorge W. Peterkin, of West Virginia, died at his home in Rich mond, last Monday, after a long illness, aged 78 years. Be was rector of St.

James Episcopal Church in Rich mond for nearly 38 years. During Lent the services in Trinity Episcopal Church of Shepheidstown will be as follows, until Holy Week On Tuesday at 4. p. m. on Wednesday at 7 p.

m. and on Friday at 8. a. in. Service at the Chapel at DufliekL each Thursday evening at 7.30 o'clock.

All are cordially invited. The Baltimore Conference of the M. E. Church adjourned on Wednesday. Kev.

E. annual conference (colored) is in session at Lynchburg, this week. This conference embraces the States of Virginia, West Virginia, i Maryland, and western Pennsylvania and tiie District of Columbia. It one of tiie largest and most influential of the colored conferences. Rev.

J. W. Meredith, pastor of the Shepherdstown church, and Delegate Ji.red Greenfield are in attendance. The United Brethren Conference at Berkeley Springs adjourned last Saturday. Rev.

J. R. Ridenour was made presiding elder for Winchester district. Rev. J.

B. Chamberlain was returned to Martinsburg und Rev. S. H. Snell was sent to Vanclevesville.

The Lutheran congregation of Sharpsburg expects soon to begin the work of remodeling their church. Mr. Samuel P. Huuirickhouse, of Shepherdstown, is making outthe plans, and the new edifice promises to be very handsome. A very interesting meeting of St.

Andrew's Brotherhood was held in Trinity Church chapel last Tuesday evening. The Brotherhood adjourned to meet after Easter. Rev. Dr. Wm.

H. Neilson. of this place, delivered an address before the St. Andrew's Brotherhood of St. 1 John's Episcopal Church of llagers town Wednesday night.

There will be service in the M. E. Church South on Suuday in Shepherdstown at 11 ft. in. and 7.80 p.

in. and at Marvin Chapel at 3 p. ui. There will be service in the Lutheran Church Suuday at Uvilla at 11 a. ui.

Canal. The Cumberland Xeics of Mondky says: "In a few more perhaps a fortnight, eigne of life will again be seen on the canal. This morniug at 10 o'clock the Potomac will again be turned into the canal, this time to stay.

Tin accident was caused by the failure the freight to continue on the siding which it had taken to let the expreu pass. Instead of holding the siding the freight passed on to tlie mail track, where the collision occurred.

The preliminary annual statement for 1891 of the Norfolk and Westeri Railroad Company shows that tin gross earnings were oper ating expenses, including taxes net earnings and other in comes, $3,469,920. Total interest charges were $2,266,130, leaving tin net income $1,208,789. The surplut for lie year was $131,289. which added to the surplus income account, inadt that item on December 31 amount tc $1,456,976. The increase in gross ings was $610,927, ami in the net 9268,342.

Neither is it to be expected that the standard bearers named would have been the choice of all. This is impossible.
