The Oratorio Society's Christmastide performance of Messiah" annual, took place last evening in Carnegie Hall. The conditions were in certain respects similar to those which always attend presentations of this masterpiece. The audience was as large A8 the house would hold and the applause betokened an undying interest in Handel's celebration of the greatest chapter of religious history. Walter Damrosch had succeeded in infusing new life into the chorus of the society, and while the quality of tone was etill far from Ideal there was a rhythmic vitality in the especially in such numbera A8 "Unto Us a Child Is Born." The orchestra, too, sympathized with the spirit of the no performance and the perfunctory character 80 often associated with share was absent.

The solo singers were Florence Hinkle, soprano; Mary Jordan, contralto: Craig Campbell, tenor, and Arthur Middleton, bass. All of them were acceptable and in certain passages much more than that. Mr. Middleton deserves a word of special commendation for the admirable management of his voice and the clarity of his pronunciation. It may be added that despite its antiquity And heavy wear "The Messiah" is still capable of giving pleasure to the exacting music lover.

In these days of faolle disposal of choruses it is inspiriting to listen to such noble choral writing, and the old familiar solos stand their ground In the face of modern theatricalism with a firmness which commands admiration and gives satisfaction, ENGAGEMENTS ANNOUNCED.
