Real Estate News Vornan High Bidder at City's Realty Sale Gives Top Price at Opening Auction of Unused Prop? erties; Pastor Buys Site in Bronx for Church Relief of New York's development. 196 parcels ot reai -abandoned police stations, schools and remnants of land taken for civic improvements placed on sale yesterday in the 69th Regiment Armory by order of Comptroller Craig. It was the first time in the history of the local gov? ernment that public holdings have been offered in large numbers and at auc? tion. Heretofore city land was dis? posed of privately or a few parcels at a time. Comptroller Craig expects to pecure more than 82,574,450, which is i the total of th? upset prices placed on the holdings by Augustus Rinn, real expert in the Finance Depart? ment.

If the prices that prevailed yes? terday during the entire sale Mr. Craip; will receive a good deal more than the value placed on the property by Mr. Rinn or the Tax Department. parcels were sold dur? ing the day a total of $444,325, which is $14,425 more than the value placed on these by the city. More than 1,000 men and women were on hand for the start the Comptroller Craig told the crowd that the sale was a departure in the manner of handlinK city property, but he thought it was good business for the city to sell properties that were no longer vital to the carrying out of civic expansion plans.

Sale Establishes Precedent Joseph P. Day then undertook what, -will be regarded as ft historic incident because the sale establishes a prece? dent that will enable futuro city offi? cials to do things which had been re? garded heretofore as legally impossible. The crowd was eager for the sale to get under way, because there was a feeling about that bargains 'verc to be had. Through the crowd were opera? tors, keen judges of property values. They made bids, but not personally, because they did not wish to display an interest because of the effect it might have on prices.

There were many in the crowd seat? ed before the auctioneer who had not; dabbled much in real estate, but had come to the sale because the Comp? troller had made terms that would make it possible for the man with lim? ited capital to buy some of this prop? erty. The corner of Second Street and Second Avenue was the-first parcel to be offered. "What am I offered for this property?" cried out Mr. Day. An upset price of was placed on the property and no bid less than that figure could be accepted by the auc? tioneer.

He waited a few minutes when out in the crowd was heard the first bid. Albert Hartman, who acted for the Knickerbocker Storage Ware? house Company, owner of the adjoin? ing property, was the successful bid? der. The property was knocked down to him for $72,000. -yMsav. Lfiia Katz, who lives In Brook? lyn, bought the northeast corner Delancey and Eldridge streets for $96, 250, which was the highest price paid during the day.

An upset price of $85, 000 was chalked against the property by the Comptroller and his experts, who regard the parcel as one with a great After Mrs. Katz had ob? tained paroel went over to Comptrollnr Craig, who was talking'to Charles Kerrigan, his secretary, and asked him to autograph the page in the catalogue showing the corner she had just purchased. Minister Buys Site for Church One of the interesting incidents of the sale was the lively bidding be? tween the Rev. John Johnson, of the Swedish-Lutheran Church, at Brook Avenue and 144th Street, and several operators for a 200-foot parcel on Fair mount Avenue, between Boulevard and Marmion Avenue. The upset price was $8,000, but it sold for $12,850, the cler? gy mn getting the property as site for a church.

The crowd gave the sturdy minister of the gospe a hearty cheer when Mr. Day announced that he had the property. The sale of the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens property will be continued to-day at 12 o'clock in the G9th Regi nient Armory, with Auctioneer Henry Brady selling. The numbers of the parcels disposed of yesterday, the locations, buyers, prices paid and upset price follow: 10, Ave. and 2d Albort Hart? man.
