Marked in the Number of Fop and Negative Electrical Condition of tho Atmospl and Notices. Attacks ond Deaths Reported Yesterday. Wo are happily enabled to chronicle the fact that the tsvages of the choloia ore still on the decrease.

Vcsloidsy pic-cnlcd on Its record still fewer names of parlies attacked, and of those who died the majority were patients of previous days. There can be uo doubt that the worstof the Reason thus far was Tuesday last, and that since that time we have had a marked decrease. We may be permitted to tndiilgi'iuo fervent Imoo that tho cti-ls is past, oud at row thodi-vosc will dwindle down to nothing at a time not far distant. The north wind which prevailed yesterday and on Thursday has undoubtedly done nmch to purify the atmosphere. A wind from that quarter Is always looked ou with disfavor, but In this ease it baa borne the balm of health on Ua wings, and the demon of disease flees before It.

The air is humid with tho vapors it brings from the Lake Superior regions, hot that vapor Is pure, and, though not remarkably conducive to pulmonary elasticity, is yet absorbent iu its natuic, taking up the surplus carbon and ammonia, which by the current is borne off and commingled with tho great almosphene mass to other legions. Should that wind continue fur a few days, the cholera will disappear fiomour midst, or be heard of lu very isolated cases. The dampness of the air hasbecn very noticeable duintg the past few days has a concomitant, not so much noted, but more efficient agent in the production of marked absence of positive electricity in the atmosphere. The effect of this is to extract from thu nulmal system the supply of force perpetually gathered by the action of tho vital powers, leaving the cunsiitulion in a condition, and therefore peculiarly susceptible to the attacks of disease, 'which by the normally healthy constitution are thrown od easily, ihe guide lor practice deducthie from this fact Is that It is especially unwise at the present lime to fatigue or overexert ourselves in uny way, us the strength is much less now than usual, even in the ease of those who arc lu what is called good health. Tut rou the citt.

It is a singular fact that for many days past a Cense tog has hung over the city, and stretched away for about fifty miles to the southwest. The log is more noticeable to one outside of space covered by It than to one within. Beyond this the tkv has been beautifully dear during the whole time. Tho phenomenon is an extraordinary one, and furulnhes au interesting Jo what extent is this fog identified with the cholera in our midst The two arc donbtless connected, and a lifting of the fog may he expected to be immediately antecedent to tbc removal ol the disease. cnoi'Suuu-B rumors.

The most extravagant nimois were afloat on the elret tu yesterday, the tears of the people having, In not a few eases, magnified thoraoleDill into mountain. The deaths of more than a dozen prominent gentlemen were fiecly reported, not one ot whom had been tick. Our reporters took the trouble to inquire Into tbe facts in each ease, and in every instance found the person mentioned, not over alive, but free from disease of any kind. The same wildness was observable with regard to the number of deaths, some asserting that there wore over a bundled fatalities bn the previous day, when they really footed up to nut about twenty-four. We say was the exact number reported on Thursday, but it must be remembered that some ottbat number died on tbe previous day while some ot those who died on Thursday were not reported until yesterday.

Tbepeopie in the country round about nrc even more excited than tho-cof the city. A letter from Janesville, Wisconsin, contained the grave announcement that the deaths in Chicago, me previous day, numbeted Wehavcnonaiticular reason for advising people to come Is probanly quite as healthy in (he country as in Chicago, but scarcely more so. At least, we would request our friends in the country and in other cities not to frighten themselves. We have the cholera here without doubt, bnt not at present in such shane as to frighten any sensible petson, and the indications ere that it has done its work. UEPOIITISO CASES.

iVUVmuiu vacu The attention of is called to the fict that one of their number was fined fifty dollars yesterday in the Police Court for neglect to report a case of cholera to the Health Office. It is the dnty of every physician to promptly report everycase intention coming under his notice. AXOTIIfe.It FAMILY GONE. Another melancholy instance of wholesale death was brought to notice yesterdav. Mr.

Schuddcr. residing on Ualtied street near Lake, lost children last week, and on Thursday last his wife and two remaining children were carried away. The poor man is left family all gone to the grave at one fell swoop. the Pinner cause. lUL PU.bvi Few if any of the cases of cholera reported have vn'-ued otherwise than from the imprudence of the victim.

Numerous cases might be cited. We give a few to point tbc the names, of course. A man residing on West Indiana street came down town on Tuesday evening in a slate of fair health. He went to one of onr hotels with a fikrd, ate a hearty supper there, took numerous dunks, went home, ale the half of a broiled chicken, went immediately to bed, was attacked with the diarrhoea during the night, and died at o'clock tie next morning. A young man, residing on West Madison street, staying down town ratliar late on Monday evening, took the care, but aficrwaitlngat he bridge for tome lime, jumped off and tan across the bridge while it was turning.

Being late for supper, and expecting some mends, he ran the balance of the way borne, eat down to sapper in a dratt, threw off bis coat, ate bcarty, and died the next day. A family In the North Division sat down on StmdaWo at meal, the vegetables for which were berate cooking. Three were attacked with the cholera the next morning, and one died. The survivors ascribe it to eating food in a elate of partial decomposition. tl In onehouse where six persons had died within a few days, the Health Officer found that the water and swill thrown into the sink, instead of running into the sewer, ran on the ground under the (tramc'i building, and when inspected the surface was covered with slimy matter from whlcha nauseous smell was arising.

We need not continue the recital. It sumdent to note that all kinds of irregularity in habit, undue exposure, overloading the stomach with food or criuk, eating decaying food, excessive fatigue, are all incitivc of cholera In cholera times, as they arc incitivc of disease at all pci tods, and are especially dangerous at a lime when disease floats in the atmosphere and death stalks abioau in the city. A little prudence, without anxiety, may be almost relied on to prevent the attack of cholera, and if, in case of attack, the patient will attend to it instantly, do danger need he apprehended. Never was the proveib, "Procrastination is the thief of lime," more aptly illustrated. An delay may be the cause of losing all the time which would otherwise Lave remained of the ul- lotted term of existence.

The danger is not in the disease, but in the delay. Yet we believe that i ven this danger Is nearly over. Very few cases of atlack occurred yesterday, the majotlty of cases reported being of patients who were attacked previously. BENEVOLENCE. The Young Men's Christian Association arc very benevolently tarnishing watchers for the sick whenever called for, and a number of students of the Union Theological Seminary are jflso nullung in their efforts to 2nd out cases requiring a-slMaucc and ministering to Ihclr wants.

Such disinterested philanthropy is most prai-cworthy, and strongly with the aOjmtnmonl and retreat of the students of Rush Medical College, at the first hint ot danger. BURYING TUE DEAD. Pome of the cases of cholera develop most circumstances. SI any of the dealhs have occurred Id the families of newly arrived some of them unable to speak the language of our and who know nul where to apply even if they could speak it. Among onr residents, too.

ihe.c are some who arc too poor to bmy tbdr dead, and bodies have, in two or three cates, lain longer than was proper before an ment could he procuied. An Instance was ed yestetday of a Norwegian family at No. Noitb llalstcd street; the father was dead. cl were nut on the sidewalk. and poor bad paced the road in front of the door for twelve lot.p hours unable, amtd her grief to act.

A gentleman parsing voluntarily attuned the trouble of reporting the case at the Health Office, and assures us that he was answered brusquely that it was none of their business to bar; the dead, and that if be wonld not bury the corpse himself he must report it to the county agent, lie did so report iuand the case was attended to. The officer staled the linlb when he said that he could notbury the corpse, co funds having been provided by tbcclly or that puntose; hut we laU to see how he could feel bnuselr justlficd in evading the responsibility of reporting the case himself. Not to speak irreverently, the corpse was at least one of those nuisances for the removal of which the Health Offices is responsible, to do It or to see that ills dorebyotbets. oincrs AND OFFICERS. Discourse by Rev. Clinton Character of the Deceased. The remains of the lamented Dr. Daniel Brainard were yesterday carried to the vaults of the old City Cemetery, followed by a long train of mourners, and amid tbe heartfelt sorrow of the whole community. The fuucral ceremonies were conducted at St.

James' Churen, comerof Unron nnd Cass streets, by Rev. Clinton Locke, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church. The occasion was a solemn and luiprejslve one. and as such it was felt by all who wore present. It was apparent that the sudden death ot inis honored and eminent man had cast a gloom not ouly upon those of hi? profession, but to a certain extent over the whole city.

At ten o'clock a number of the friends of the deceased met at the residcnccof Colonel J. 11. Bowen, on Michigan avenue, from whence they proceeded to the church to receive the remains. A number of Indies and gentlemen were assembled walling lor tbo services to commence. Among them were airs.

At elev en o'clock the coffin was taken from the funeral car by the pall-bcarcrs, and carried into the church. At the porch stood some ladies, each with a floral wreath or immortelle, which they laid upon the btcras it passed. At the same time the clergvman proceeded to read the burial service 1 am the rcsnrrcctlon and the The coffin was home along to the front of the altar, followed by the members of the medical profession in a body, and the students of the college- After the usual prayers and the reading of the Scriptures, Kev. Clinton Locke delivered the following funeral discourse: THE rLKEUAL OUATIOK. Well docs Horace say that and impartial death knocks at the door of the royal palace as well as at the cabin of the 1 Our Last Enetnv, as the Scriptures expressively call him, is not daunted by station, cor careful of feelings.

He would enter a congress of the world's monarebs, lay bis band npon the shoulder ot its mighty head, and perforce, the stricken one must lay aside the crown and sceptre, pomp and power, and follow him. He is utterly regardless of the crying need there may be for a man, his brilliant acquirements, the usefulness of bis position, the void bis death will create; relentless, immoveable ns heart of marble, be moves among men and summons them away. Mcdneval tradition loved to represent him under the figme of a woodman walking through a forest, now cutting down a tender sapling, now a hard and sturdy oak, now cropping a Just opening flower, and now overturning an aged tree in the wind. Cruel and myelerlons being, we shudder when wc think ofblm and all his loathsome adjuncts, and Indeed the misery and the wretchedness he causes would be without one single ray of comfort if the eve of faith did not see standing beside his skeleton the all-glorious figure of the Lord of the Ilcsuncciion. hearing the trophies of his victory over death, pointing to the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, and proclaiming that being raised from the dead, death bath no more dominion over him; that as In Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."
