The extremely active and very Irregular course of trading on the Stock Exchange today was almost wholly traceable to Impending developments at Washington and the extension of labor troubles. 1 Money conditions were again, distinctly encouraging in the sense that call loans were freely obtainable at moderate rates, while time funds were more plentiful, mainly from in terior sources.

Prices of active stocks, seasoned as well as speculative issues, were 1 to 6 points higher at the excited opening. Those advances in several noteworthy instancel being con siderably extended during the first nour. Rails and a few of the high priced specialties, suon as tooaccos, proved the only conspicuous exceptions to rally, wnich gave way, however, to another extensive selling ovement at midday. or the balance of the session the record was one of almost steady betterment, favorites among indus trials, notably United States Steel, reflecting accumulation of a substan tial character. Short covering con tributed In no small degree to the markets stability, with numerous gains of 2 to 10 points.

Sales amounted to 2,050,000 This is the fourth time this year that transactions have approximaed he two million share mark. On the previous occasions, however, each enormous turnover accompanied ris ing market values. The more confident tone reflected by the stock market did not extend to foreign exchange, rates for the most part continued to move against London and continental Europe with fracs almost at yesterday's low record. Filbert, a Beading Railway brake man, residing at Robesonia, met with a serious accident at Conshohocken and is now at the Bryn Mawr Hospital with a compound fracture of one of his legs.

The accident was caused by the blowing out of a cylinder head of engine 1718 while enroute to Harrisburg. The unfortunate man was picked up and hurried to the hospital four miles away. He is 26 years of age and single. He belonged to a Harrisburg crew. The Reading Company received another MaDet locomotive.

The number is 1827, and, on the first trip from Philadelphia, hauled a train of 80 cars.
