Douglas totd the Toronto Star that chances of a match race being hefd were extremely remote. But he didnt entirely rule out the possibility. Douglas said Lewis wouldn't consider participating if his status with the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the international governing body of track and field, would be affected. Johnson was stripped of his Olympic gold medal and banned from competition for two years after he tested positive for the muscle-building anabolic steroid stanozoiol. Glen Calkins, the agent who handles Johnson's Canadian endorsements, said he has been approached by three American organizations interested in promoting another Johnson-Lewis showdown.

BASEBALL Danny Jackson, David Cone and Mark Gubicza combined for a three-hitter yesterday as the Major League Ali-Star team won its third straight over the Japanese All-Stars, 3-1. Jackson went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Cone pitched hitless ball into the ninth, walking four, fanning five. FOOTBALL Houston Oilers nose tackle Doug Smith, suspended 30 days for violating the NFL substance abuse policy, will be treated at an in-patient facility, GM Ladd Herzeg said. Smith, in the midst of his best season as a pro, tested positive for the second time and will miss at least four games during the suspension. TELEVISION The Sugar Ray Leonard Donny Latonde fight Monday night was the biggest-grossing pay television event in history, one of the promoters said.

Jim Troy of Titan Entertainment said the pay-per-view telecast grossed $19.5 million, surpassing the record of $18 million set by Wrestlemania IV in March. Troy said 650,000 homes paid to watch the telecast, which sold in most areas for $29.95. Wrestlemania IV was shown in 900,000 homes, but the telecast grossed less money than Leonard-Lalonde because it cost $10 less. COLLEGE ATHLETICS The NCAA and Kansas said they will look into allegations in a Sports Illustrated article that some players were given illegal loans. The story said former player Mike Marshall, who worked in basketball camps operated by coach Larry Brown, made loans to Danny Manning and other players.

Kansas, which won the NCAA basketball title last spring, is already on probation for three years in part because of Marshall's role in providing travel and cash to former Memphis State guard VJrtce Askew when Askew considered transferring to Kansas in 1986. The investigation of Tommy Chaikin's allegations of steroid use at the University of South Carolina grew as officials announced a joint federal and state probe into the charges made by the former Gamecock football player. TENNIS Ivan Lend! and Jimmy Connors were upset by unheralded West Germans, while John McEnroe beat fellow American Tim Mayotte in the $350,000 Stuttgart Classics tournament Cart-Uwe Steeb edged Lendl, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, while Eric Jelen rallied to defeat Connors, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
