Page Four The Liberty Vindicator Thursday, July 15, Vindicator VICIOUS RUMORS Let all and wrath, and anper, and EVIL SPEAKING, be put away from you, with all malice. 4:31. The rumor-mongers have been working overtime in IJberty lately. They receive no bonus pay for this excess use of their vitriolic tongues. All payment goes, instead, to the usually-innocent victims; and it is in the form of mental anguish, bitterness, destruction of reput-ation, lifetime scars.

peddlers is the chief current topic of the evil mouthings. Names of adults and youths are bandied about as if they were rattlesnakes in the garden decency. Dates, events and are added to the lurid stories as they pass from one imaginative mind to another. No one bothers to check the accuracy of the rumors. Even reputable citizens aild and subtract eyebrow-lifting words and phrases.

This morning it is a hazy rumor. By afternoon there is a hint of a name or two. Ky tomorrow it will be repeated in all solemnity, newly garnished, as if it as true as the rising of the sun or the coming of the morning mail. Someone has been arrested by the third day; an FBI man has been for months; a dope pusher has been jailed. By the end of the week the victims of this gossip begin to pick up a slanted word here and a secretive suggestion there.

They and their families become bewildered, concerned, frantic, embittered. Where did it start? Where will it end? For some of the answers these some of the facts that will help set Vindicator readers straight about the dope situation in Liberty and the front page in this issue. truth will as one scholar wrote. But. in the meantime, the inncK-ent weep and the slanderer enjoys a field day of untruth and defamation, iCibcrtu lUniiicatnr Esublished 1887 J.

C. Smyth Editor-Manager LOCAL GOVERNMENT Qualified citizetis who decide they vote Saturday, July 24, there are not enough might as well say: shouhi I be interested in electing the men and women who spend my tax money Take a quick glance at the ballot. Starting at the top, we will elect a United States senator from Texas. The Senate, largely, holds the purse strings of the country. One or two votes in the Senate might well decide whether your personal are reduced, increased or allowed to remain static.

The r(Kihot race for governor, and the tightening race for state representative in this district, pinpoint the fact that the governor and the Legislature well decide what your state taxes will be. During the past fiscal year, says the Tax state tax collections broke all records, reaching a high of many millions of which come out of Texa.s. What about local tiixes. Well, thev hit a new high of $10.200,000.000 last average of more than $60 for every man, woman and child in the country. That means far more than $100 per year for every family.

In Liberty County, where the average per capita income is higher than the national and state average, the percentage of taxes is even higher. 7'hese local-tax figures mean much in relationship to the coming primary. There iire three contests in the four precincts. The commissioners are the key officials determine where your county tax money goes. They are.

in effect, the board of directors for Liberty County, a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Therefore, if you fail to vote in this primary for the commissioner you think will handle your tax dollar in the most efficient and economical manner, you are saying, by your negligence, that you care how much county tax you pay or how it is spent. absentee if you plan tc be out of your voting on election day. And when Saturday, July 24, rolls around, it might be profitable to consider whether your tax money is more important than a fishing trip or some other pleasure-bent jaunt.
