Born Toronto, Jan. 15, 1927; son of the late William Joseph MacCabe and Winnifred Flynn. Survived by his daughters, Kathryn Macmillan (Allan) and Colleen Clark (Andy) and his beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Jamie, his estranged wife Helen, sisters Kathleen O'Meara, Norah McAuley (Cliff) and Elizabeth Flynn.

Predeceased by his first wife Peggy (nee Liddy). Graduated St. Patrick's College, RCAF air gunner, started newspaper business with Ottawa Journal in June 1946. Worked for Montreal Star in 1951-52, returned to The Journal, became editor and daily sports columnist and resigned in 1977 to become sports editor and columnist for The Ottawa Citizen. Suffered heart attack covering Stanley Cup playoffs in May 1985 and retired.

Inducted into the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame, media section, in 1986 and Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Won many writing awards, including best football writer in Canada in 1960, awarded by the Football Reporters of Canada, and Citation of Merit from Canadian government for contribution to amateur sports in Canada. Wrote a number of books, including the Russ Jackson story which was on the best seller list for many weeks in 1969 and which went into paperback and was used in many Ontario high school English courses; a 25-year anniversary history book of the Canada Games, and a history of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Also wrote several plays which were produced for television, and short stories, including his annual Christmas stories which were featured in The Journal and The Citizen, and one of those was made into a television play. Response from those Christmas stories came from around the world, from Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, United States, Australia and all parts of Canada.

An class golfer, he toured golf courses in Ireland and Scotland and wrote a series on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland which was officially recognized by the Royal and Ancient by being entered into the official archives of the R. and A. Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Covered all major sports stories and was the featured writer on the Ottawa Rough Riders through their glory years under Frank Clair; the Ottawa Senators in the old Quebec Senior Hockey League, he covered Grey Cups, Super Bowls, Stanley Cups, World Series, many major fights, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, most of the major golf championships, but he enjoyed most covering amateur sports, including boxing, golf and skiing and especially hockey in the Valley. He served as a director of the Quebec Golf Association, including a term as chairman of the Quebec Golf Association, including a term as chairman of the Ottawa District, and also as a director of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. For 20 years, he reported the morning sports in CBO radio, did weekend radio shows on golf and skiing, and did the weekend sports show on Sunday nights on CBOT. He also was featured in a weekly football show on CBOT, with the Rough Rider coach at the time, and wrote and hosted many other sports shows on CBOT.
