Chicago. Wheat has had a nub stantial reaction today as result of a Blackening in the export demand and a very moderate reaction In the foreign markets. Latter'rlalnly balked on the advance here yesterday and on the prices asked for cash wheat but have taken hold freely again on the dip in cash wheat prices. Break was healthy in that it caused cash wheat and future buying by the foreigners early; also much realizing by miscellaneous longs here. Cash market has been relatively weaker on contradictory reports concerning the new wheat out turn and Quality.

Cash sales 175,000 bushels. CORN Trade in corn today has been enormous. have caused renewed buying and bulges greatly increased thrt sales. There is a wide difference of opinion regarding the growing crop Temperatures in corn belt low but large part of trade seems to believe they are not necessarily unfavorable. No sign of frost, although temper atures all over belt were far below normal.

Some of the larger local longs have sold a great deal of corn today to take profits. The northwest has also sold and tho public seems to have been more or less divided in its views and to have sold as much at least as it bought. Cash sales 1S3.000, seaboard 11 loads. OATS December and May oats sold to 55 cents today and September to 57. Market was very tight as result of continued covering by shorts, mostly country sellers who find their grain will not grade contract.

Trade of this sort today, however, has not been as large as yesterday. There has been more Influential selling, besides leading bull here has been credited with further sales of September and buying May. Elevator interests have bought and sold in a way to indicate a general pressure on the market. Market has finally felt this and other pressure. Cash sales 133,000 bushels.

Lard was firm and fairly active early but the entire list has given way since on pressure on each item from a larger packtr. Stocks If market bulges up today we would take There was some good, selling of stocks In the last hour yesterday and I am told it would be in evidence today. I think if you get any soft sn.it. stocks are a purchase. The last days have shown pretty conclusively tnat 11 any buying power develops there are no stocks pressing.

sell 4Vi bonds, and I think that 4 rate for New York City bonds Is a bear argument. Other conditions have not changed and I am selling stocks. J. B. Walker.

Bristol, Va. On the petition of the Northern Coal company. Judge Skeen of the United States court has appoint ed L. C. Petit of Big Stone Gap, receiver of the Union Iron Steel com pany, a Delaware corporation with pig iron and steel manufacturing plants at Ironton, Big Stone Gap, Chath- aming, N.

Denver, and Birm Ingham, Ala. The capital stock is $2, 000,000. All things considered, I believe that the market will gradually work high er, ll reactions come, do not ie airaiu to buy stocks. On the other hand, it will not surprise me to see prices work several points higher without much set back; but in this case the reaction will be more severe when it does come. If a real campaign i near, it ought to be preceded by moderate break from around today's tops.

ltidgley. Instinct In Plants. Climbing plants have two opposing methods of describing spiral growth. The plants that turn to the right In the northern hemisphere reverse this trend In the southern hemisphere, and therefore, for the sake of consistency, It may be preferable to describe the two kinds of spiral tendency, as re spectively "clockwise" and "counter clockwise," which latter can be shortened to "counterwise." The honeysuckle and the hop turn "clockwise," while the convolvulus and the scarlet runner bean twine "counterwise." Experiments made by growing scarlet runner beans In opaque cylinders, to discover whether the deviation of the twist was innate or merely from the direction of the light, disclosed the fact that the plant possesses an inclination resembling the instinct of animals, of proceeding in a given direction, and resents any attempt to force it otherwise. 9-5-tf. The market will unquestionably continue to be active with upward ten dency. There will bo reactions as f.l-ways occur in an upward market and people should buy then and always take profits on the advance. The market was fairly Bteady at the opening but it was very evident that some one was selling stocks, unquestionably profit taking, and a reaction of one to two per cent set in before there was any recovery. No news of any consequence devel oped, and the market has very much of a trader's character at present, and we believe that purchases on reactions should prove profitable, but profits should be taken on fair ad vances.

The failure of the Union Iron and Steel company is regarded as unimport ant in iron and steel circles. The com pany was a producer of pig iron besides being interested in other properties which have been showing poor results in the way of profits. Swedenborg In Ruffles and Wig. Swedenborg was a great deal In London, where he was known and admired and had several good friends, but his small knowledge of English and the impediment In his speech precluded him from any real intimacy. His slight figure, with Its fine features and hazel eyes, was well known In the neighborhood of Coldbath fields, where he lodged, and he was often seen stopping to talk to the children, for whom he used to carry sweetmeats.

He was always dressed in an old fashioned suit with lace rufQes and wore a full bottomed carrying a sword and a gold head ed On1 Christmas eve, 1771, he had a stroke of apoplexy, and on March 29, 1772, the day he had foretold, he died at the house which he had himself named. Occult Review. Antiquity of Tea Smoking. "With your tea cigarettes," said the antiquary sternly, "you young ladies think yourselves very modern and de cadent But look here." "This chows you," the old man said, "the antiquity of tea Brooking.

It was a common thing in France 200 years ago. Blegnt mentions it, and Grand d'Aussay in his 'Ilistolre de la Vie Prrree dea Francais describes it in de talL An old vice, a dead vice for the French found that tea smoking racked the nerves how very, very foolish you girls are to have revived it" New Or leans Times-Democrat WANTED Chambermaid. Two of the young friends of Bishop Wllberforce of Oxford gave the authorities of the university so much trouble that they won the nicknames of Ilophnl and rhinehas. One day, says T. H. S. There are 200 species of roses in existence, though perhaps not more than fifty clearly defined families. Of these families only two are of American birth. There are thousands of varieties, however, and of these our enterprising rose growers have contributed by far the largest proportion. The eagerly sought black rose is still un-produced, though a New York florist has a dark red one wtich in some lights has the appearance of black velvet.
