A spokesman for the order said he was ordered to return in 1970, but refused. Consequently, the spokesman said, he was automatically excommunicated. After his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Max Schiffman.

Wojtowicz was sent to the Federal House of Detention in Greenwich Village, pending hearing Aug. 31. An Honorable Discharge His court-appointed lawyer, Mark Landsman, said Wojtowicz has never been in trouble with the law before. He was honorably discharged from the Army iii 1969 after serving three years. Landsman added that Wojtowicz has "worked for various banks throughout the city." 72 Auricchio said Aaron told him: "I'm all mixed up.

I want to be a girl. I have to marry the boy I introduced you to. If I don't, I'll be more successful (in suicide) next time." "To Save His Life" Aurichio said he then agreed to perform a ceremony "to save his life." "I promised him I would perform a blessing," he added. "I would not and cannot perform a homosexual marriage. It's an unnatural alliance.

A blessing is a union between two persons who promise to be loyal to each other and, in this particular case, it erased a deep feeling of shame-fulness. "Aaron felt once this was performed, his soul would be clean. As I look back on it now, I shouldn't have performed this ceremony. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't." He said that Wojtowicz, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam, wore his dress uniform with service ribbons for the ceremony. Auricchio took a leave of absence from the Society of St.

TODAYS PROGRAMS to the driver's head, Wojtowicz leveled the rifle at the hostages and ordered them out of the limousine. An FBI official approached to talk to the bandits. Then, at a signal from another agent, the driver pulled his pistol, whirled around in the front seat, knocked the shotgun barrel aside and shot Matterson in the chest, killing him almost instantly. Other FBI men grabbed Wojtowicz, who dropped his gun and surrendered. During the long siege at the bank, Wojtowicz had demanded to see his homosexual "wife," Ernest Varon, a mental patient at Kings County Hospital.

Aaron was brought to the bank but refused to enter, telling police that Wojtowicz "doesn't love me anymore." Refuses to Surrender Patrick Coppola, 22, with whom Wojtowicz has been living at 250 W. 10th went to the bank door, kissed Wojtowicz and spoke with him briefly. Other friends of Wojtowicz and his mother, Mrs. Theresa Wojtowicz, also tried to talk him into surrendering but he refused and threatened to kill the hostages if police tried to crash into the bank. FBI agents reportedly questioned both Coppola and Wojtowicz yesterday about the latter's story involving a Chase Manhattan executive.

Wojtowicz and Aaron, each of whom has a legal wife and two children, were "married" last year by an unfrocked Catholic priest, the Rev. Gennaro Aurric-chio. Auricchio, who now works as a New York University librarian and lives in Greenwich Village, said he had been counseling Aaron after he separated from his wife. He said Aaron intro-duced him to Wojtowicz and told him they wanted to get married. Around Thanksgiving, Auricchio continued, Aaron tried to commit suicide.

The priest -went to visit him in the hospital. (Continued from page 2) bills in an attache case and were about to leave when a police car pulled up in front of the bank. The robbers locked the front and rear doors. Then more cops arrived and the siege was on. The third member of the holdup gang apparently was waiting around the corner in a getaway car rented by Wojtowicz under his real name.

When police got there, the lookout took off on foot, leaving the car and his buddies. More than 200 cops and FBI agents surrounded the building. The police were armed with rifles, shotguns, machine guns and tear gas guns. Marksmen covered the bank entrances from behind cars and from-the rooftops of buildings across the street. Ambulances and doctors stood by.

Finally after tense hours of waiting and negotiating through the bank doors, the bandits demanded a jet plane to fly them to Canada. The FBI arranged to have a small, 12-seat jet ready at' Kennedy Airport. But the G-men did not intend to let the bandits fly away. A nine-passenger limousine arrived at the bank shortly before 4 a.m. The bandits had released the bank guard several hours earlier as a sign of good faith and now they let one of the women hostages go.

They herded the six other women employes and manager Barrett into the limousine at gunpoint. Barrett carried, the case with the $29,000. Gun Strapped to Ankle The limousine was driven by an FBI agent who had a small pistol strapped to his ankle. Wojtowicz frisked him but failed to find the gun. A earful of FBI officials preceded the limousine to the airport and about 20 cars full of police and G-men followed.

A two-engine jet was waiting on runway 22R at the Southern end of the airport. The limousine pulled onto the runway around 5:20 and stopped near the plane. As Matterson held a shotgun Highlights a.m. 13 World Championship Chess; Fischer. Spassky Recap at midnight 7:01 p.M.
