At its conclusion a shower of bouquets fell at her feet, and aha retired amid a deaf on ing peal of at pi suae." The San Diego Union says: Tom McAaliffe, who has returned from a trip to Julian, showed us a piece of ore yesterday that bod boon taken from a new ulaim just located on the edge of the desert, about ten miles eust of Julian, which assays over one thousand dollars per ton. This claim has been located by Thomas Buudy, of Julian, and Mr. MoAulilTe says that it ut tbe testimony of all the miners in the Julian distriov that it is a very rich discovery.

The proprietor.

The New Railroad. The Los Angelee and San Gabriel Valley Railroad Company will commence on Monday tbe grading of seven miles of the track of that important live of road. It is understood that the dummy railroad eumpany will retire from the Held, and that the Los Angeles and Sau Gabriel Valley Railroad will occupy tbe Arroyo Seoo line, provided the right of way is given along that Hue. It also appears that there are two rontes along the Arroyo Seco for this line, one of which is in the Arroyo valley and the other on the mesa ml joining ou the north. This appears to be tbe popular route, from the fact Hut tbe line displays both the valley land aud the mesa, and is also oo the proper piano for a branch railroad through tbe San Rafael Rancho end Verdugo Canon to Creseeuta Canada, which is rapidly titling up with settlers.

A line in tbe Arroyo bottom would not display tbe mesa at nil, while a road on tbe metia would display both the mesa, the mountains ami the bottom lands. If tbe proper right of way is secured tbe road along the Arroyo will speedily be constructed on that line. The line which was to enter the city by Atiso street has already scoured the right of way, but if the Arroyo land owners will grant the same right ot way the live mity go by th it route. The popular Hue will doubtless be by tbe Arroyo mesa. There is another consideration that sbould load this road by the Arroyo mesa, and that in the business that is to come to it from the Sen Rafael and Canada rancbos.

A new wagon road is to be built from near the Watte reservoir in San Rafael rancho, through the Verdugo mountains to tho Lauterman settlement. Tbia road would be a largo feeder for the line, and that with tho Verdugo canon settlement aoovo the rancho of Mayor Thorn, and the Creseeuta would make a lively business for the new line. It is important that all interests should be harmonized and that the road ahould be built on tho most advantageous line for alt interests concerned. If the land owners along the line comprehended thtir true interests they would give tbe right of way with alacrity, and speed the construction of this line of travel aud trade. The road will be built on one of the three lines proposed, end it remains for the land owners to, say which it shall be.

County License Law. The obnoxious County License Law is creating the most intense throughout the city and The business men are perfectly furious and denounce the act tn most unmeasured terms. The following petition is now in circulation to be presented to the Board of Supervisors at their me eting next Monday, August 4th: "7'o the Board of Suiter visors of the County of Los Angeles, July 30, ISS4- Gknts: We, undersigued taxpayers of tbe city of Loe Angeles, bt-g respectfully that you at once repeal tbe odious county license law, it being antagopiatio lo republican or principles and oppressive to the dealers and traders of the county. We would urge upon you the necessity of repealing such ordinance and lessen the taxation and discomfort of your petitioners." There is no doubt but that the Board will repeal tbe law which is so burdensome to the business interests of this city. By this most unequal law the retail Itqnor dealers pay a license of only $10 per quarter, while every peddler of merchandise or other goods in a wagon is taxed $40 per quarter.

A commission merchant must pay 95 per quarter aud a real estate agent $10 per quarter. Persons engaged in bottling and sslllng beer or ale must ply $5 per quarter and an insurance agent $10 per quarter. A wood-yard pays $5 per quarter, and a second-hand furniture store $10 per quarter. It is needless to say that the indignation of the people is great and gi owing. From all parts of the county the storm bursts forth and will not cease till the rates are changed.

Tbe law seems to be a tax on energy and enterprise, and in many cases will exceed the profits of the dealers. Do the Supervisors mean to take away the entire support of families by this law A Mugwump on the Plumed Knight. I Editor Herald It puzzles me very much why the Republicans of this seem to do nothing but howl about Blame, as if he had done the State some great service. They bold np his Chinese record. What opposition there ever was to anti-Chinese legislation came from the Republican party, notably Edmunds of Vermont and Dawts of Massachusetts.

Blame, while Speaker of the House of Representatives, prostituted bis position to make himself a millionaire or financial bandit, and from the number of fat pluml be picked, he deserves his name as the plummed knight or tbe Knight." He hae had two atnbittooe during bis life. The first waa to get rich, and ihe second was to become President of the United States. The first be has already accomplished. Hia magnetism is simply demagogiain. For the last eight years he has been moving heaven and earth to accomplish the second ambition.

His way of getting bold of the Mulligan letters and the sunstroke racket prove him a trickster. He never had a sunstroke before or since, nor will not, till next November. Daring the war he was so afraid to lose aa opportunity of getting hold of some fat plums, that, when he was drafted and called to do his duty, he hired a substitute, and now they are holding bin up as the noblest Roman of tbem all, a typical American. Typical Americans never send snbstitntes. Instead of buying plumes the Blame enthusiasts should buy a "white feather." They should also purchase glasses so as to distinguish betwoen honesty aud roguery.

At present they are morally blind. A RkptMLU'AN Duerte, July 28tb. The Laws of Evaporation. Conrad Dryer, a man who was until recently in the employ of Mr. Conrad Hafen, a winetnaker, was examined yesterday upon tbe charge of burglary, before Justice Ling.

Ia order to let the public judge of the helnouaneea of Conrad's crime, a condensation of the prosecuting witness' testimony is hereegiven: "Der boy sumdlmes he talk very much mit bis mouth, und he peat der horses. I cun'd say of he waa droonk, but be peat der horses und he was talk soo much. He go und take of mcr ill hinges yon de door of the keller where I keeps my wine und mit a bucket mit a buckst goes he hi wine, und this several time, and in his troonk find we the backet." The complaining witness was confidential all through and gave these feels to his honor and the counsel on both sides with many gestures aad shrugs. Miss Ida, hia daughter, being called afterwards gave expert testimony as tothe evaporation In a gallon barrel every fortnight. For the defense the only testimony was in rebuttal as to tbe evaporation ef 160 gallon kegs, as stated by Miss Ida.

The Judge pondered deeply about this problem for a time, and coming to the conclusion that wine don't evaporate at the rate of a bucket and Its contents during one night, held Conrad Dryer in the sum of 9300 to appear before the Superior Court for the crime of burglary. A Word of Caution. The glanders appears to be prevailing among the horses of Southern California to a moderate extent. Some have been attacked by the disease in this city and have been promptly shot. The disease is also reported in Man Bernardino county.

All persons should kaow that the harboring of an animal infected with this disease is a great criminal offense, by the laws of the State. All animals infected with glanders should be killed and buried as soon as the disease li diecovered. It should also be know.i far aud wide, that human beings are quite as likely to take this disease from a horse as tbey are to take small pox from an individual. The only way to stop the disease is to kill every horse that shall become feet ad with it Sbould any attrt eases occur here they will be dealt with in that meaner, and tha disease be not peri aaUted In spread. A Budget of Railway News.

Captain Waau rulhamus, of Yuma, arrived In Los Angelos yetterdsy, from the scene of the bridge building operations at the Needles. The temporary bridge mjA Colorado river at that point has been completod, and the first train passed over it yesterday, thus for tho future doing away with tbe laborious process of transporting freight lioat on the Atlantic Pacific Railway. The Captain went down to Wilmington to sec bis brother. He will return to-day and go out to Yuma, where he will engage a large force of Cooopah ludluns for work ou the permanent biidge at the Needles. The demand for farm labor in Kern county has been so great in the harvest field that the Mojave and Cohuilla Indians, who were formerly employed by the railway company, have been coaxed off, anil it is necessary to employ the services of the hostile Indians ot Ihe lower Colorado, who can be scoured for titty cents a day, while the pamperod Indians of tbe Mojsvo country are now receiviug $2 a day as agricultural We may add that a sort of epidemic haa broken out at The Needloa, whicb has resulted in several very sudden deaths amongst the bridge builders.

Dr. Ross, of this city, was summoned yesterday hy telegraph to attend to these cases. This unexpected mortality is supposed to have resulted from the too free nse of ice water In a climate where the thermometer at midday, in this season of the year, generally stands at l.lt Fahrenheit. We learn from Captain Polhamus that, as soon as tho permanent bridge has been built over The Needles, ihe whole foroe of laborers will be shifted to Yuma', and that the bridge at that point will he open for couimeroe about tho 15th instant. This will be gratifying news to our merchants, to.

our farmers, and to tho public generally, all of whom have bueu greatly incommoded by the obstruction of transportation incident to the sweeping away of bridges of trans continental importance. Captain Polhamus added that, owing lo the super-human efforts of the railway people, almost the wbulo of the contents of tbe blockaded freight traina on the other side of the Colorado have been already transferred to this aide.
