PrtCollini.WWOR MUSIC REVIEW Trio's talents wasted on fluff by Beethoven National Arts Centra Orchestra with The Erolca Trio; Gilbert Varga, conductor When: Wednesday and Thursday Where: NAC Opera By Murray Dineen Citizen correspondent Ottawa was introduced Wednesday night to a Viennese treat, the Eroica Trio, three young women performing Beethoven's Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in Cmajor. The trio has a rich tone and a gentle sense of ensemble. What i misfortune to squander their talents on an eminently forgettable work.

The Triple Concerto has little to recommend it, compared with the rest of Beethoven's work. Indeed, it supplies evidence of his ability to write fluff. From the Eroica Trio's resume, it is capable of more rewarding music, and we would be fortunate to have it back again, but ideally performing something a little more substantial. Gilbert Varga was the invited conductor for the program. In Beethoven's Prometheus Overture, he adjusted the NACO's sound, setting that of the wind ensemble quite apart from the sound of the strings.

The effect was delightful, and took full advantage of the Opera's usually indifferent acoustics. Beethoven's Fourth Symphony was not quite as successful, despite some excellent solo work from the winds, especially clarinettist Kimball Sykes. The orchestra seemed to be working at cross purposes with Varga, particularly in the third and final movements. With the impending departure of maestro Trevor Pinnock, the NACO must settle on a new path, and in doing so must factor in conductors of the calibre of Varga, who compares with Hans Graf, heard at the podium in March. Graf was all energy, exploding with humor and fun, willing to turn the NACO's innate abilities to his own ends.

In contrast, Varga seemed more restrained, less confident with what is a truly expert orchestra when it comes to Beethoven. "Fine Family Entertainment."
