East won the ace of spades and returned a heart. West won the heart queen and shifted to a low diamond. East won dummy's jack with the ace and played back the ten of diamonds, taken by West with the king. West then shifted to the nine of clubs.

Do you finesse now? Having lost four tricks, South can afford one more loser. If you finesse, you run the risk of East winning the king and returning a club for West to trump. You may well go down in an unbreakable contract. The alternative seems to be a safer approach since a 3-2 spade division is a higher percentage proposition and eliminates the worry about a defensive ruff. You might ask a key question here.

Why didn't West return another diamond? This bidding never revealed the distribution of the diamond suit and East may be able to trump a third round of diamonds. There in lies the answer to this not so simple problem. By failing to return a diamond, West seems to know something. Perhaps West knows that East would not have a spade to trump a diamond even if East bad no more diamonds. If that was the case, South has a fifth implied loser in the trump suit and must hope that the club finesse wins to secure the contract If you tried the club finesse for that reason, congratulations.

If you didn't take the club finesse at all, should we suggest you were unlucky?
