Major is a purebred German shepherd who has proved it's a dog's job when it comes to tracking down violators of Nova Scotia's game laws. Major has been on the job since 1966 when the department decided that dogs might help reduce the incidence of fires deliberately set in the province's forests. From mat beginning, the department has acquired three other dogs which are used extensively in tracking down suspected violators of the game laws and occasionally to help locate missing persons. Major and his master, provincial forest ranger Robert Matheson, live in Middle Ste-wiacke in Colchester County in the central part of the province, where the department recently heard complaints of deer jacking, or poaching. Ranger Matheson and Major ended their investigation early one morning when they stopped a car that bad (, Deaths BALDRY, Willard In hospital Wednesday, Feb.

Halpenny, Lecta. McNaught, James Central Chapel West Chapel 2331143 poachers dog's job been behaving suspiciously. Although no incriminating evidence was found in the vehicle, Major searched the nearby roadside until he located a rifle, a light and some shells. The department was able to prove the items had been thrown from the car during a brief chase and the three occupants were convicted and fined $700. The other members of the ranger-dog teams are Dave Thomas and Lucky, who work out of Grafton, in the western sector of the province; Murray Workman and Smoke, who are based in Antigonish, and Ed Touesnard, who works with Dan in Cape Breton.

"Dan is only a year old and only started tracking a few weeks- ago," said" Gerry Davis, Major's first dogm aster but now supervisor of forest protection at fire control headquarters in Shubena-cadie. "He has already had his first successful case involving illegal hunting activities." All the dogs are obtained throughout the province but must be suitable to their work. They are not easy to find because an efficient tracking dog must come from a dam and sire with good temperaments.
