D14 The Ottawa Citizen, Thursday, February 16, 1995 ClTYLIGHTS ROBERT REDFORD AND ALLIANCE PRESENT Survivor Art Bergmann has a New contract, new album, new outlook STRAVCERRY CHOCOLATE SAVOR THE FLAVOR HIIWWAX ULT.T.aao it I lit FRIDAY 1 i THE 70599500 It CHECKERED CAREER: Bergmann's new album What Fresh Hell is This? doesn't back away from his drug addiction Bergmann also takes on his latest career resuscitation in a cut called Contract, the album's first single. "I dig my own grave for you, be a total slave for you, go around the world for you, create a monster and bring it too. We got a contract, a contract. Who's using who," he sings. But Bergmann says he was "pleasantly surprised" when Sony signed him after he went to Toronto to record a track for the Neil Young tribute album, Borrowed Tunes.

What Fresh Hell is This? was recorded in a mere 12 days at Sony's in-house studio in Don Mills, Ont Aside from two Juno nominations in 1989 for most promising male vocalist and best video for Our Little Secret, the Sony contract is the closest Bergmann has ever come to music industry acceptance. "I was dangling big time," says Bergmann. Now Contract is enjoying radio play "from sea to shining sea" as Bergmann puts it and he's looking at a cross-Canada tour in March. "They seem to be on the ball and know what they're doing and putting the full brunt of their company behind my record," says Bergmann of Sony. "That's refreshing, that's never happened before." PULP FICTION (R) Daily 8:00 DUMB DUMBER (PG) Daily 7:20 9:40 THE QUICK THE DEAD (AA) Daily 7:00 9:25 By Jane Stevenson Canadian Press TORONTO Art Bergmann is the definition of a rock survivor. From his early days as a punk rocker to the aging rant 'n' roller he's become, Bergmann is known as much for his drug and alcohol-induced antics as his blistering live performances and much-heralded songwriting talents. Whether it's incest (Our Little Secret) from 1988's Crawl With Me, or heroin on his new album What Fresh Hell is the Vancouver singer-guitarist has never backed away from life's underbelly, He's not only observed it, he's been a willing participant. "The truth is actually much stranger than what you've read or heard," says Bergmann, on the phone from Vancouver.

Rock critics have called him everything from "maybe the best songwriter in Canada" to "Canada's most accomplished and inveterate screw-up." But Bergmann is about to add mother, hopefully, cleaner chapter to his checkered musical career. At 40, he has a new contract with industry giant Sony, a new album ghat's in stores this week and a new outlook after some time in detox. "You don't do much writing in $hat situation," says Bergmann, with a laugh. "But the ideas come fast and furious when you're going through metamorphosis Bergmann's drug demons are documented in several songs on What Fresh Hell is This? which takes its title from a favorite quip of literary wit Dorothy Parker. I The most striking track is the catchy Beatles in Hollywood, which sounds like a cross between early bavid Bowie, The Fab Four's White flbum and comedian Dennis Leary.

"There are no absolutes to human misery, things can get worse," the song begins, before Bergmann later confesses, "You want to see a drunken rage. Hell, I could do that straight. I'm so sick of health and cake, logically, I could medicate myself right back into a coma." But when it comes to actually 'alking about his experiences in Bergmann prefers to let the music speak for him. "I don't like to talk about it too much 'cause it's private and personal but it's an ongoing thing. If nothing's happening I just sort of fall off the wagon."
