Shaun Pomer of Ottawa, aged 29 years. Survived by his mother, Myma Delayen; his father, Victor'Pomer (Phyllis); his brother, Scott, his aunt, Kay Pomeranski; by his half sisters, Angela and Elizabeth Simo; and by many cousins. Shaun was a very prominent cellist in the music world. He was a graduate of Indiana University and along with his brother, Scott co-founded the internationally acclaimed Brooks String Quartet. He was also a distinguished soloist, teacher and recitalist.

Shaun was a recipient of many major grants and awards and was a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra for the 1984-86 seasons. Shaun's music enriched us all. "I've been doing this for quite some time," he says calmly. McCracken, 39, has spent six months in the African country helping to prepare the way for 7,000 UN peacekeepers expected to arrive later this year.

His experience in de-mining was earned during a 20-year career with the Canadian Forces in such countries as Cambodia, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
