Now. whea Peter Rabbit said, "Will some one please tell me how under the sun Sooty builds a neat in a he asked a poser so far as his feathered friends of the Old Orchard were concerned. They had Just been laughing at him and poking tun at him because he knew- so little about Sooty the Swift that when he had seen him go down Farmer Brown's chimney he had thought that something had happened to Sooty as a result ol which he had fallen down the chimney. This had seemed to -the leathered folk of the Old Orchard a great Joke. Peter it goodnaturedly and laughed, too, which was the sensible thing to da Then the birds declared that Peter ought to know something about Sooty and had started in to tell him the things he didn't know.

They started In by telling him that Sooty makes his home in a chimney. Right then Peter asked that simple little question and discovered that he had asked a poser. He discovered it by the sudden silence that fell. Each one seemed to be waiting; lor some one else to answer. Peter asked it over again and waited, his eyes beginning to twinkle, He suddenly suspected that the very ones who had laughed at him lor his mistake about Sooty didn't know as much about their leathered neighbors as they pretended to.

"Don's ral speak at once." said Peter as the silence became rather pauuui. "xou leu me, jenny Wren," he continued. "You know so much about your neighbors." For once Jenny Wren's lively tongue seemed to have something the matter with it "Why why 1 suppose he builds It the same as the rest ol us build our nests," she stammered. "But you aU build differently," persisted Peter, "You build yours Inside a box or in a hollow tree where it cannot tail. Welcome Robin builds his in a crotch ol a tree or oh a big branch, where it cannot fall off.

Goldie the Oriole fastens his to the twigs on the end of a branch and lashes it so that it cannot come loose' no matter how hard the wind blows. But if a chimney Is the same Inside as it is there is nothing for Sooty- to build on, and how can he fasten it ta the side? Perhaps he builds It at the very bottom. You ought to know, Welcome Robin. I've often seen you sit on the top of Fanner Brown's chimney." Welcome Robin stammered as badly as had Jenny Wren. "I I I never have seen Booty's nest," he confessed.

Then with a toss of his head he added: "I never meddle with the affairs ol my neighbors. It Is none ol my business how Sooty builds his nest "GhiUer- eUiter ehltter chit-eWU crted Sooty. and I've never tried to find out I know, he builds it in that chimney, and that, is enough lor me. You wouldn't because you couldn't There isn't one ol you who can go straight down la a place like that and you know it" cried a voice right over their heads.

It was the voice of Sooty himself. Ha had been circling around Just over them and bad heard aU that had been said.
