The Ottawa Citizen, Monday, March 8, 1993 B9 ArtsEntertainment Eastwood wins directors award Ontario killings an Unsolved Mystery By Stephen Ewart The Canadian Press BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) During 35 years in westerns, Clint Eastwood made a name for himself with just about everyone but his peers. Now, with nine Oscar nominations and a prestigious Directors Guild of America award, the star of such films as High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider and the epic The Good, tlie Bad and the Ugly, seems to have convinced them, too. Arbor, in November. McAllister provided information but wasn't involved in taping of the 10-minute segment.

"They told me that if I watch it on TV to make sure I've got someone there with me because it will bring back a lot of. memories," said McAllister. He'll watcK" the show, to be broadcast next Wednesday, with his son and daughter. Unsolved Mysteries which has broadcast 350 crime-related dramatizations says there are arrests in 17 per cent of its recreations when there is only a description of the suspect. "This isn't the first show we've done' about a highway rest stop so maybe it will serve as a warning to people that these can be dangerous places," producer Rogan said from Burbank, Calif.

The McAllisters were driving in a familv in for Unforgiven, 35 years after he became famous on the western television series Rawhide. "I've made my mark with westerns," he said. "It's ironic it comes around with this kind of film." The DGA presented several other honors Saturday. The D. W.

Griffith Award for lifetime achievement went to director Sidney Lumet, whose films include Network, and Dog Day Afternoon. The television awards went to: Seinfeld, best comedy series for The Contest, directed by Tom Cherones. Northern Exposure, best nighttime dramatic series for Cicely, directed by Rob Thompson. Wonderworks, best daytime dramatic show for You Must Remember This, directed by Helaine Head. The TonigM Show, best musical-variety show, director Bobby Quinn.

The pilot for Picket Fences, dramatic specials, directed by Ron Lagomarsino. Leslie Dektor won best commercial director for a Philips Electronics spot. The Career Achievement Award for Sports Direction went to television sports innovator Harry Coyle.

TORONTO Gord McAllister, who survived a triple shooting that left his wife and a passerby dead, is hoping an Unsolved Mysteries dramatization helps resolve the 1991 killings. "When Unsolved Mysteries called it just seemed like we had nothing to lose and seeing it on TV might just revive someone's memory," McAllister said from his home in Lindsay, Ont. "The fellow playing the bad guy is a bang-on likeness." The show is being aired at 8 p.m. Wednesday on CTV and NBC. McAllister, now 64, was asleep with his wife, Jackie, in their camper at a secluded rest area along the Trans-Canada Highway near Blind River, Ont.

A man, identifying himself as a police officer, knocked on their door about 1 a.m. June 28, 1991, and wounded McAllister and killed his wife in a robbery. Brian Major, 29, who apparently stumbled on the crime, was also shot dead. An exhaustive police investigation has turned up few good leads even though The Directors Guild of America was the latest to come around, when it presented Eastwood with its prestigious award Saturday as the year's best filmmaker for the western Unforgiven. The victory makes Eastwood the odds-on favorite at the March 29 Academy Awards presentation, where he is -y rpiininn in Winninnn u.linn Eastwood Odds-on favorite sleep about 100 kilometres east of Sault' ste.

Back and forth she swung, back and forth and back and forth, for years and years. Winter gales sent her aswish, spring winds sent her swirling, a summer breeze set her twirling round and round.

And in the cool and fickle autumn winds, she danced like the scarecrows in the farmer's fields. day the weathervane grew weary of her daily 3 grind. "What misery! she cried. "Day and night I swirl and twirl and swish and dance. I never rest.

I never sleep. Winds, you are cruel and fickle. As if it should be up to you whether I rest! I'm tired of your whims. Oh me, oh my, I'm tired of my life." The animals in the fields below looked up for a mo Bill huffed and puffed, but the weathervane was still and silent. "You think you can move me! Not a chance!" she thought.

One day the farmer looked up at the weathervane and saw that she was still. "A fine day for the horses," said the farmer, and he took his team out to the farthest field. But to his astonishment, the winds were blowing hard and fast and the horses neighed and neighed and ran away back to the barn. The weathervane laughed at the farmer's folly. But the next day the farmer brought a ladder with him to the barn.

He set it against the wall and climbed up onto the roof. He crawled to the weathervane's feet and began to pour oil from a can. He poured oil down her body. The sticky, smelly stuff ran down her legs and arms. "What's this?" she cried.

"Stop it!" Still the farmer poured the oil. The weathervane shook with fury. She began to shimmy and twist and shout with rage. "Stop it at once!" she shrieked. And now another wind came along and one tiny puff sent her twirling.

"Oh, I'm dizzy," cried the weathervane. The slightest breeze could move her now. On came the colder, harder winds. They lashed at the weathervane's sides. They brought with them hail and snow and sleet and rain.

And suddenly a great blast of wind appeared and with one push heaved the exhausted weathervane right off her perch. Up she flew into the air, free at last. And then She came tumbling down. Down, down, down, she twirled and swirled and flipped and flopped, and clattered to the ground. There in the barnyard she landed, headfirst in a pile of snow, straw and mud.

She sputtered and choked, calling for someone to come and save her, but no one heard, and no one came. Days passed, and the weathervane lay, battered and beaten, lips pressed to the ground. Then at last the farmer happened to pass by and saw her surrounded ment Then they returned BEDTIME STORIES to their grazing, ignoring COLOR ME! the weathervane's whine. you hear me?" she creaked. "The blasted winds, provoking me all day and night! If only they would give me an easterly one day for a change.

Or a warm nudge in winter! Something new. Do you hear me?" Not one sheep looked up, but the barnyard hens flapped their wings and clucked, "Quiet up there!" "Bleak and bleary February!" cried the weathervane. "The blasted winds blowing hither and thither! And if you think the day is bad oh, the winds at night! Where is that groundhog when I need him? Groundhog!" The groundhog poked his head up out of his hole, blinked, and turned back to his comfortable sleep. "No one listens to me!" cried the poor weathervane. A villager passed by and gazed up at the weathervane to see which way the winds were blowing.

"You, there!" cried the weathervane. "Can you imagine how unpleasant my life is? Do you know what it is like to be perched here atop a pointy pole? Set me free, and I will fly!" A flock of birds passed overhead. The weathervane began to creak still louder. "You up there!" she cried. The farmer climbed up onto the roof and began to pour oil from a can down the creaky weathervane's body.

"What's this?" she cried. You by the munching sheep, unmoved by the wintry winds. "What's this?" he said, turning her over. "Why. poor old weathervane, you've fallen off your post Let's get you to the blacksmith.

He'll straighten you out. Such a pretty thing you were." And the farmer picked up the weathervane and carried her to the blacksmith's shop. The blacksmith took his hammer and fixed her up in no time flat The farmer took her home and shone up her arms and legs, and the next day he carried the weathervane up to her perch and placed her there. He tipped his hat to her. "You never looked better," he said, and he climbed back down and smiled up at his dancing weathervane.

And never again did the weathervane inurmur or moan or complain. Forever afterwards she proudly showed the world which way the winds blew. (By Amy Fnedman: original art by Jillian Gilliland, distributed by the SouthamStar Network Bedtime Stories appears Saturday and Monday through Wednesday ever seen!" The birds flew away. The weathervane jerked and pulled and stretched, trying to follow. She swirled, she twirled, she swished, but stuck to her post she remained "All right then," she snapped, "I'll just st md still." And she stopped moving.

"I won't move one inch. Look up at me all you wish, but I will tell you nothing. I will give away no secrets. Nothing at all. I'm through!" For days and days the brisk, bright February winds pushed and heaved with all their might, but to no avail.

The weathervane would not move. The winds heaved and think you're all so fine and free, but I could fly just like you if one of you would take the time to set me loose!" The birds swooped down and landed on the barn roof. There they pecked at seeds scattered by the wind, ignoring the weathervane's cries. "Oh, you think you are pretty things," creaked the weathervane. "You in your dusty grey you are dull creatures, that's what you are.

If I were a bird I'd be handsome and I would flap my gilded arms and sail and swirl and float like no bird you have i.
