C2 The Ottawa Citizen, Wednesday, April 28, 1993 Sports TRIPLE-A BASEBALL Clippers feast on Lynx Columbus loads up on fat bullpen servings after nibbling at Mathile to SfflT Clippers 8, Lynx 3 "That's the choice. Face a left-handed hitter (Santangelo), who has some pretty good stats, or face the right-hander. (Haney) did what we wanted him to do," said Clippers manager Stump Merrill. It was the fifth straight win for the Clippers (11-7), who are battling the Charlotte Knights for top spot in the International League West. The Lynx (6-8) lost for the seventh time in nine games and now sit two games back of IL East-leading ScrantonWilkes-Barre.

The Lynx, fielding a radically different lineup from previous games, exploded for three runs against Columbus starter Sterling Hitchcock (1-2) before the home side lifted a bat. The Clippers two-time defending IL champions pulled even in the second, turning two hits and two Mathile walks into three runs. The home side went ahead for good in the fifth inning off Mathile, a Dayton, Ohio native, who had a support group of 30 family and friends in the seats. "You don't see many runs scored early here. It's tough to see the ball," said Silvestri.

"Usually, things don't get rolling until the third or fourth. They came out hitting the ball, and a couple of times they could have broken the game open. We got a few key double plays." NOTES: Lynx reliever Sergio Valdez will be unable to pitch for the next couple of days after he twisted his ankle running in Ottawa Monday Clippers outfielder Billy Masse was named IL player-of-the-week ending April 24, batting .478 with three homers, three doubles, a triple, nine RBI and eight runs scored in six games. following a bout with chicken pox. "No excuses.

I'm ready. I'm not impressed by anyone in their lineup. I just have to make some adjustments. Nothing major." Most of the crowd of 5,420 many no doubt enticed to Cooper Stadium by the 10-cent hotdogs found it safe to go home after the Silvestri smash. But only a half-inning earlier, the Lynx had a golden opportunity to tie the game, if not go ahead.

Playing percentages, Clippers manager Stump Merrill called on reliever Francisco delaRosa to intentionally walk Lynx leadoff hitter F.P. Santangelo, loading the bases with one out. The move worked perfectly for the Clippers. Second baseman Todd Haney, now mired in an 0-for-10 slump, grounded into an inning-ending double play. The dessert was provided by Columbus Clippers shortstop Dave Silvestri. What was shaping up as a late-inning manager's duel became a blowout once Silvestri belted a two-run, seventh-inning home run off Lynx reliever (Wild) Bill Risley. Risley, called in from the bullpen to keep the Lynx and starter Mike Mathile (0-1) within a single run, finished the inning with the Clippers up by four.
