The Ottawa Citizen, Saturday, September 21, 1991 K3 Hockey Hall of Fame Hockey Hall of Fame dinner on Ottawa By Martin Geary Citizen sports writer The 35th induction ceremonies will feature coach Scotty Bowman, former NHL stars Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Bob Pulford, Clint Smith and longtime linesman Neil Armstrong The 35th Hockey Hall of Fame induction dinner comes to Ottawa for the first time Monday with a star-studded cast For one night only, NHL fans can invest $250 to see hockey's winningest coach, a goal-scoring artist, the top-scoring defenceman, a true two-way player, an ironman official and a veteran who rarely visited the penalty box. In a ceremony at the Ottawa Congress Centre, coach Scotty Bowman, forward Mike Bossy, defenceman Denis Potvin, forward Bob Pulford, linesman Neil Armstrong and forward Clint Smith will be inducted into the Hall. This will be only the third time the dinner has been held outside of Toronto. In 1986, Leo Boivin, Dave Keon and Serge Savard were welcomed into the Hall in Vancouver during Expo "86. The 1988 ceremony was held in conjunction with the entry draft in Detroit, where Tony Esposito, Guy Lafleur and Brad Park received their coveted rings.

The move to Ottawa was an obvious one after the NHL board of governors awarded Terrace Investments Ltd. one of two expansion franchises last December. The theme of the Ottawa Hall of Fame dinner will be a Salute to the Senators both old and new. The Senators were the NHL's first dynasty, winning the Stanley Cup in 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927 and finishi lg in first place seven times from 1919-27. Everyone attending the dinner will receive It and Frank Nighbor, the skates of Cyclone Taylor and the stick goaltender Percy LeSueur used for eight straight seasons, 1906-13.

Columnist Wayne Scanlan tells on pages 9 and 10 how a blow to the head with a hockey stick ended the junior career of Scotty Bowman, who went on to compile an unprecedented 739 career wins as a coach with the St Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres. If not for a chronic back injury, Mike Bossy could have been the greatest goal scorer of all-time. In his 10 seasons with the New York Islanders, Bossy counted 573 goals and had nine consecutive seasons of 50 goals or more. He also had five years of 60-pIus goals. Don Campbell interviewed hockey's first 50-50 (goals-in-games) player since Rocket Richard for a story on pages and For 20 years, Denis Potvin patrolled the blue line of the OHL's Ottawa 6Ts and the NHL's New York Islanders with authority.

An NHL rookie of the year, a top defence-man for three years and the captain of four Stanley Cup winners, Potvin is profiled by Ken Warren on pages 5 and 6. Bob IWord dared to be different both on an off the ice. On pages 20 and 21, Martin Cle-ary tells how a hard-working Maple Leaf earned his B.A. while playing in the NHL, started the NHL Players' Association and then worked his way up the management ladder. If one word could describe linesman Neil Armstrong, it's dependable.

Armstrong didn't miss an assignment in 16 years and only one in 1,962 regular-season, playoff and all-star games. Assistant sports editor Tom Casey spoke to Armstrong and his associates for a story on page 24. Playmaker Clint Smith logged plenty of ice time and picked up a lot of points in his 10 years with the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks. He rarely visited the penalty box, accumulating a career 24 minutes. There were four seasons when he didnt get a penalty.

Bob Ferguson reviews his career on page 16. Tickets, which have remained at $250 ($150 deductible) for the past four years, are available by calling Michelle Landreville of Callprint Canada at 233-4101. There are about 250 tickets remaining. Proceeds of the dinner will fund the Hockey Hall of Fame, which is moving to downtown Toronto in the fall of 1992 from the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. a limited-edition calendar with the six inductees superimposed over aa image of the 1927 Ottawa Seaators' Stanley Cup-winning team.
