We were shown yesterday evening, by Mr. Shaeffer, conductor on the Reading Railroad, a picture captured at a house of a Rebel Colonel, within one mile of Fairfax, by Lieut. Mass, of the Neversink Zouaves. It re preseati a fine lot of horses "going to the Fair." Also an Extra of the Virginia Times, issued on tb of June, 1840, containing the news of some whig victories, of which there was so large a crop during that year. It a poorly printed sheet email ia sue, and reflects little credit on the prin ten of 'I MiscBrtr.

The spirit of mischief is constantly at work, it seems to us, among our Northern poll ttoians. If old Niok bad the whole of them safe. our cause would flourish without a single check But, we have no doubt, that there are men, who if they csnnot carry their point otherwise, would give information to the enemy to blast the char acter and prospects of any one who stood in their way The last piece of rascality is that of ma king an attack on Uen. MoClellan whose arrest at the head of the army, is suggested Would sot the people do well to hang a batch of these meddlesome fellows, so that the nation oan go on with its war for the Union, Liberty, equality. The suggestion, we think, if acted on, would operate benefioially.

A colored gentleman well known ia this community, relates a story of a "member of his party" from Allen town, wbo accompanied an officer to the wars, and who, on the occasion of the battle at Falling Water, unexpectedly found himself is the midst of the fight, lie gave it as his experience that fighting was rather an unpleasant business and that colored folks couldn't stand fire. In his case, he stated, he sought safety ia a fence corner, and on being asked what he would have done if his officer had been wounded, and it should have become neces sary for hlui to attend on him His anawer was I explicit, "Attend to bias; I had more than I could do to attend to myself In such tunes ererybody aaast attend to himself." Emreti or nt Dailt Times, QaatuvBH Sobm cf our men have had fastea to cross to the other tile oC the Pstomac, scd seen many of the "boys" over there alio were found to be all well and lively, and ready and ailing for a fight a any tlae; otheri of the company have been to see the 93d, Col. WcCarter's, about three miles east of us, and found them all in good health and spirits.

To onr friends in old Reading we would say, that we would be thankfol to them to get us a few more mea for our company yet if possible as we want to raise it up to 98 men, and believe that there are still some of the "same sort left" there that we have, here, they will not regret coming Into. Company H. as it Is a Jolly crew, ready for fan or fight at any time. Our Regiment was paid off oa last Honda Toesdav and Wed nesday oar eompanj received eighteen hundred and fifty six dollars and seventy five cents. There being three naen Ui the company who received no pay, as they enlisted after the Pay Rolls Were handed in, to the.

The greater number of the mea sent home from 110, to $18, of their lr months' pey, several re. teining no money at all, but sending all home to their families or friends I believe, at least $1200 have been sent from Company H.

Our friends should have seen the glad faces in the Regiment, when A. Ballade, Paymaster, made his appearance with his U. 8. bills, as many of them had given over being paid, be being somehow or other behind the tine several weeks, perhaps his duties at other places kept )tiat longer thaa aaual. When he left he promised to call and see us in a month hence, when two months' pay will bo given the Of the various reviews of the troops on both sides of; the river, it is not necessary for us to say any thing.aa pens more graphio than mine have already furnished the public with all the details respecting them.

Permit us in jConelusion to, offer our hearty thanks to Frederick Laner, to whose untiring sea! in our behalf, company H. has been provided with, tha necessary article of a soldier, gnm blankets. "Those already. furnished and what we will get in a few days, will nearly, if not furnish every man with one in the company. To all our other friends in Reading, we offer our heartfelt acknowledgements for the many favors conferred on us, and hope that we may be, (as they are in ours) still held in their remembrance.

Truly yours, 4c, M. S. R. 'i. i ii what the "Louisville Joueral" Says "We do not believe that even in this age of cheap publications, any, work can be more reasonable than the terms of the Sciektific American at $2 per annum, with twenty five per cent discount for clubs of ten.

There is not an industrial pursuit which does hot receive a share of its attention It contains official lists of patent claims, important statistics, practical re eipes for useful domestic purposes, and has long stood, both in this country and Europe, as the highest authority in the mechanic arts and scien ces. There is do publication more valuable to the farmer, the miller, the engineer, the iron founder the mechanic, er the manufacturer. We fully endorse the above, and would recom mend onr readers to take Prentice's advice, and subscribe for the paper. A new volume commences on the first of January, and it being a value, bleworkof reference, containing, as it does, the only official list of patent claims published in the country, every number should be preserved. The paper is published every Saturday, by the well known patent agents, Messrs. Bdtcberixo. As this is the time of the year for those who have been feeding swine through the summer and autumn, to gather in their pork and lard for the next year, the butchering business has become quite brisk for a while and nearly every morning, as we wend our way to business, our ears meet the sound of the squealing porkers, as iney are uxen away irom ineir slop ana corn to be cut up into hams and tassagtt for a winter feast We pity the fate of "poor piggy." Who ever heard of a dand ling, inactive personage accomplishing anything? What is the fate of those who rely solely upon the help of others to get along id the world These questions are easily answered and we commend them to those who take fright at every rambling sound, magnifying it into an earthquake.

This is indeed an important era. The American i people are now mahng a history that will be read with interest, hot only when, the boys and girls of to day shall have grown grey with for centuries to come. None of the events record'' ed in the history of 'Greece and Rome, that are still read with so maeh interest, were of such world wide aa what is now transpir ing in this year of Qraoe 1861.

Our young readers, and even grown people, who pore over the de tails of the war of '12 can hardly realhse that a greater strife, and if possible a more important one, is now in progress in our very midst. The result is to determine, for the benefit of the world whether or not a free Government like oars, is a strong one, capable of endurance, and adapted to the wants of the human family. This causes, its details, its results, will be constantly written about, talked1 about, and referred to in the highest legislature councils of this and other countries, longer than the youngest child that reads these pages will live." Let all the youth, then, read about and study the transpiring events of the day, and let them be discussed at the fireside, at the table and in the school room. Sandwiches for Evening Parties.
